Recently purchased a pair of new pants but needed an adjustment as one of the cuffs was a quarter of an inch longer than the other. After being assured they could make the adjustments, I waited a week and picked them up trusting their reputation. Upon taking them home it was immediately obvious they raised the hem of one leg by a whole inch and a quarter! Further, it seems they messed up once already during the process as there are clear tailoring marks further up the pant leg that were not there before. If they can make such amateur mistakes with something as simple as adjusting a hemline (ruining a pair of pants in the process), I would never trust them with more delicate alterations. read more

I took 4 items for tailoring on May 6th and was told they would be ready after 2pm on May 14th. I arrived just after 2 on the 14th to find they hadn't even started on most of my items. Aside from the excuse that I should have been told to call after 2 (if I hadn't previously been called to pick them up), I didn't even get an apology for having my clothes sit there untouched for a week! I am now anticipating the tailoring to be as poor as the customer service. Update: I picked up my garments this morning and they were beautifully done! Two items were repairs and two were alterations. Everything was very nicely altered or repaired and needed no adjustments. Best of all, the female who initially helped me and had not been in the shop when I was there yesterday, was there this morning and apologized for the problems. Searching for reputable alterations in the area, I chose JC Lofton Tailors because there's a legacy attached to it, they specialize in suiting and they're ranked as one of the best in Washington. "Hollywood for Ugly People," a city of filthy rich power players HAS to have an abundance of good tailors and cobblers, right? I needed the waists taken in on two pairs of pants, with a hem and taper in one of them. I've been burned by so many places back in Houston--especially a tailor who mutilated the old dark grey ones in the photos before they were resuscitated last year--that I was hoping for good luck in DC. JC Lofton Tailors is on U Street, directly across from the Metro and the American American Civil War Museum. There's also a shoe shiner downstairs. It's a really tiny space with about three tailors working there, and the entire measuring and fitting process was en pointe--what I expect from a reputable tailor. I came there to take two pants in the waist--one old, one new--as well as tapering and hemming the new pair to match the old ones. It all came up to $72 after a 10% first-time discount. That's basically $30-something on both pants, which isn't too bad. As I've said, I've been to a few tailors in the past, both good and bad, in several large cities. They may have all had their set prices, but you'd pay *after* the services are done--a deposit to start the work, at best--and they'd have provisions for updates to existing work. So keep that in mind. I brought my pieces in on a Thursday, and got a call Monday afternoon as told. Overall, the pants were immaculate at first glance. I lost two inches in my waist since moving here, so my old J. Crew were no longer bunched around my waist. And my new Tyrwhitt pants looked as sexy as ever. All of that to say--a basic fact is that your pants are supposed to be able to sit on your waist without a belt. This is a concept lost on most tailors in Houston, even "the best in the city for 51 years." So the work was physically done, and while the new pants weren't tapered as much as I requested, I was otherwise happy with the potential; 8 times out of 10, any initial tailoring job is going to need to be tweaked because that's the nature of the trade. Most tailors that I've gone to in other cities have it that if you need changes, they're done at no additional cost within a certain timeframe because it's a correction to an existing job....which is why they have you pay on the back end and not on front. JC Lofton Tailors does not. *However,* I was given a discount on my continued taper--$23 marked down from $32. I overheard a regular come in requesting some additional work to a dress she came to pick up. She did get $80 marked down from $100, to put it into perspective. They called me back about an hour and a half later to pick up my revised Tyrwhitts, and they. were. divine. This time, Eddie Lofton, owner and son of the company namesake, was there. I asked if I could try on, and he jokingly hesitated. I'm thinking, "Dude, you just got $100 out of me for two waists, a taper and a hem; I'm inspecting every. square. inch." All jokes aside, everything looked fine from what I could see, until I got my happy go lucky self home and noticed a fair amount of pulling in the hem of the new pants. Luckily, dry cleaning seemed to take care of that. So all in all, the work was really good. The ruffling of the hem was a bit of a buzz kill, but it was nothing that I freaked out over, and the dry cleaner took care of it. But as I said, you would have to pay in full on the front end, which then causes you have have to pay even more to get it how you originally asked, or any refinement. That was the only real killer for me. With that said, I'd still recommend them. Their reputation is LEGIT earned, don't get me wrong. But just make sure to examine the work with a finer-toothed comb than I did, and come with the coins. read more

I bought a brand-new skirt & top for an outdoor garden wedding. The skirt was a lined linen fabric and was too big. The tailor brought it in around the hips and the final result was fitted and flawless. I felt gorgeous at the wedding and got compliments all night long. I also brought in a strong-shouldered 1980s dress of my mom's, which was too tight around the shoulders for me. The tailor enlarged the sleeve opening while preserving the original design details and I now have a new dress to wear. Both garments were ready early, and they called to let me know in case I wanted to wear them that coming weekend. This is a thoughtful, stellar team. Recently, I went to 4 different DC area tailors and gave each of them suits, sports coats and trousers to alter, so I have some sense of what the area offers. The price is here compared to those of two others, and the alteration on the sports jacket (collar, sleeve and shorten) was the best amongst all . It was absolutely perfect, especially the Collar. The owner and Taylor's are extremely helpful and I really enjoyed the visit. Parking is extremely difficult however. I would go back to him again only to alter jackets, with the caveats that you'll see below. None of the tailors fixed the pants correctly( taper and shorten) the first time . Jc Lofton did not even fix the hem, which was half done. So I would say that was not a good experience. The worst part however, is that they insist that they called you but I have no record of any phone calls on my cell phone and this has happened both times that I've left stuff. So I am left calling multiple times. Sometimes a person picks up who doesn't even seem to be working in the shop and tells me to call back when the owner is there. Really sketchy. I would give him a five for the jacket, 3stars for the trousers and 1 star for communication/telephone etiquette and professionalism. read more

Would be 5 stars, but the cashier is rude. On two occasions I was charged more than I was suppose to be charged. On my first visit, I received a 10% discount for new customers. The tailor, Roger corrected the slip and added tax, she added tax again! When I go to pick up my pants which were hemmed, wait brought in and tapered ($78 after 10% off) but I paid $84, she again charged me too much for a measurement. Roger measured me and said it will be $20, I go pay and now I'm paying $25. She heard him say $20 it was only myself in there, I ask about it and she says " it's $25", if that's the case why not say " roger that's price is wrong". I didn't get full measurements only coat size, Outseam; neck and sleeve, so maybe it is $25 but I didn't get full measurements so that's why he was charging me $20. My card had been swiped by then, she didn't confirm price before swiping my card. Next time, because I will be going back because pants fit very well, I will confirm before she swipes my card of the price the tailor, Roger gives me. read more

I first went to JC Lofton because the tailor at my dry cleaner's said it would be too difficult to repair a beautiful raincoat I had, and I read that Lofton's was good at such things. I brought it in, Mr. Lofton said he could do it, and he did a great job at a very reasonable price. After that I brought in a whole bunch of suits and blazers that looked oversized for current styles. Mr. Lofton and his excellent team altered all of them expertly, giving me a whole bunch of basically new clothes at a bargain price. Mr. Lofton is a very nice man, fun to hang out with, and he has some good ideas for training the next generation of tailors in the DC community. I'm proud to be a customer of his shop. read more

VERY EXPENSIVE!!! Was quoted almost $100 for a basic dress alteration. Decided to try them out based on convenience (in the neighborhood) and good reviews but took the dress to department store (Nordstrom) alterations and cost much less. They had a lot of wedding dresses hanging and some of the receipts were really, really expensive! You want to support small business but at these prices it's really hard. After years of problems, I have finally blown my stack. I do not know what is worse - their incompetence or unreliability. They usually leave work (at least small things) until the last day. Thus, they are always scrambling to finish which leads to mistakes, or to do really stupid things. Also, they seem to make special trips to buy things such as buttons, so things take forever. Furthermore, they know that they are an "institution" as one of the few black-owned businesses that survived the 1968 riots, so people will come to them regardless of how bad a job they do. I have no doubt that they often do excellent work, as they have done for me. However, working with them is a crapshoot. Here is the worst example. I brought them a handmade sweater I made. The pockets were getting frayed so I needed the inside lining in them so my fingers would not constantly go thru. I discussed exactly what I needed. I called the day it was due, and they said come over in a couple of hours. When I did, I blew up. They had put a white silk pocket on the inside of the sweater. It was nothing like I had asked for and looked ridiculous. The whole place was very embarrassed. I came back and talked to Eddie, the owner. He was going to have to go to Maryland to buy other fabric. A special trip for a piece of black felt? Nuts. I went thru with Eddie exactly what I needed. I called a couple of weeks later. What's up? Eddie needs to go buy the fabric. Another couple of weeks. Eddie just got the fabric. Another call. Eddie tried to call you to say it is almost done but the number was wrong. Hmm? The correct number is on the receipt. It is finally ready. I come in and see that Eddie had done they exact thing that I told him was wrong. I blew up again. He had to redo it. It took over 6 weeks to get two pockets lined. The are not many tailors in the area, but a lot of dry cleaners good sewing. I am going to one of them next. read more

This review is a long time coming! I had the best experience here. JC Lofton altered two pairs of pants that were both way too big for me. I ended up having a far busier month than expected and missed my pick up appointment by several weeks. They were patient and understanding. When I finally did pick up the items, I didn't even have time to try them on because I had a flight to catch. But one month later when I did get to check the fit, it was perfect. The seams were neat and strong. One of the pants even had pinstripes and they looked as good as they would if I had picked them up from a store because the waist and pant legs were perfectly even on both sides. I had an incredibly frustrating experience with JC Lofton Tailors. In early September, I was given a leather diaper bag that needed an exterior zipper repaired. I took it to our regular dry cleaner & tailor, who said that they couldn't do the work, but JC Lofton just up the road certainly could. I checked out JC Lofton's reviews and they were positively glowing, so I decided to give them a try. On September 9th, I dropped off the bag for a zipper repair/replacement. I didn't get it back until October 22nd. I went back a total of FOUR times to pick it up after being assured each time that it would be fixed immediately. Each time I went, I interacted with someone different (the first two times I went to pick up the bag after being given a firm date of when service would be completed, the employees could not even locate the bag without searching for several minutes). I don't know why, but it was clear that no one had even taken a look at the bag after several weeks (when I was initially promised it in just a few days). The THIRD time I went to pick up my bag I decided, "If it isn't fixed by now I'm just going to take it elsewhere." Well, I showed up and the bag was torn where the zipper was, but no repair had been made. I was given a rather flimsy excuse of "We need to order the correct color" and was told I would be given a phone call the next day, Saturday (10/19). I made sure to write down all my contact information AGAIN so that I would be contacted. No surprise, no one called me on Saturday with an update and when I called several times, I kept getting a busy signal. On Tuesday (10/22) I was in the neighborhood and decided I had had it and was just going to get the bag. I called and the gentleman I first spoke with said "Oh it's almost ready, give us 5 more minutes". I parked, waited 20 minutes, and then went in...to find them still stitching up the zipper. I waited another 10 minutes and finally got my bag back. As for the craftsmanship of the zipper replacement, it is not the quality I expected. It is not a smooth zip and the leather bunches/is puckered in places. Additionally, they lost the leather tassel/pull that went on the original zipper yet claimed there wasn't one to begin with (there was). JC Lofton may be a wonderful place for regular tailoring needs, but my experience of waiting - and being given the runaround - 43 days for a zipper repair leaves a very, very bad taste in my mouth and I will not return. read more

I was referred here by a friend. They are located on the second floor of a townhouse so easy to pass by and not notice. The first floor is shoe repair. I've been here a few times over the winter and felt uncomfortable walking through the shoe repair area where no one was wearing a mask then in the tailor shop the woman never wore a mask. I'm a dummy and I bought a bridesmaid dress while pregnant. I tried it two months after having my kid and it seemed to fit. Didn't think about the length. The day before the rehearsal dinner, I tried on the dress and realized it was a size too big and way too long. I traveled to DC from Cambridge MA and started frantically calling tailors to shorten the dress figuring I can pin it to make it tighter or wear a big bra to make it fit. This place really made my weekend. The woman on the phone was super helpful and clear. I brought the dress in and the staff graciously offered to bring in the sides in addition to making it shorter. Being a new mom with a three month old baby, they turned a frantic, awkward dress weekend to a really enjoyable one where I feel beautiful for an evening in between changing diapers and getting up all night to calm a screaming baby. Last year, I took my precious Nina Ricci mini-skirt whose hem had come undone to Tower Cleaners in Shaw, where they charged me $10 for a simple re-hemming only to have it come undone less than a year later! (This is how I learned to never take your tailoring to a dry cleaners; go to a spot specializing in tailoring.) And yes, I know it's pathetic that I am a grown woman incapable of hemming her own skirts. I'm not dextrous. Today, after much procrastination, I took a quick break from work to bike to JC Lofton at 11am, upon reviewing the fabulous Yelp reviews. JC himself - a.k.a. Julius - re-hemmed my skirt on the spot within five minutes, noting that he'd gone over the stitching twice to make sure it wouldn't come out again. Apart from the appreciated efficiency, the price was HALF of what Tower Cleaners had charged, coming out to $5. The sweet lady at the cashier preferred that I pay in cash, given the measly amount, but when I noticed I only had $3 in my wallet, she said that was enough. How nice of them!
