I was mentally prepared to take my dress to the dry cleaner's after it was finished, however, I think he keeps garments well wrapped, because when I brought it home there was no smell at all. As others have said, the place smells of cigarettes, but my clothes didn't when I got them, nor was there cat hair on them. The zipper fix was not a new zipper, but rather sort of moving it up the zipper and getting it back on the track, but it works, and was less expensive than buying a new pair of pants, so it got the job done. read more

I love Mr Kim's and found him on Yelp! He is quick, meticulous, and affordable. The only thing you have to get past is the smell of the shop, it smells a bit like cat litter and cat but if you can get past this (like me) then you have found a great tailor! I've gotten 2 pairs of pants hemmed for $30 and done in a week. A formal dress for a wedding hemmed up and straps tightened for $120 (i think) done in 2 weeks, and a maxi dress hemmed up for $45 done in 4 days. None of these orders were rushed but he can for extra $! read more

WOULD NOT RECOMMEND: I've been to Kim's for 3 garment alterations now. The first alteration came out nice on a custom suit, but when picking it up, my suit smelled like cigarettes and was covered in cat hair. Mr. Kim has cats in his shop and I believe he smokes in his shop as well while working on garments. The second and third time I dropped off my wedding suit and a custom jacket for some alterations. The alterations came out nicely, but again, it smelled like cigarettes and was covered in cat hair. So, be warned. You'll need dry cleaning after dropping your garments off with Mr. Kim. But that's not the worst part. After I had left, and before I had even worn the suit. I noticed that there was a cigarette burn hole in my brand-new custom-made wedding suit. The hole was on the back of the leg and went through the pant in two places. Mr. Kim did not tell me that he had damaged my suit and he tried to cover it up by patching it with leftover scraps from the alteration. Mr. Kim also went ahead and charged me the full amount for my alterations after BURNING A HOLE IN BRAND NEW PANTS! Cannot fathom that he wouldn't think I'd notice the blemish and that it was alright to charge me for alterations to a very expensive suit that he ruined. I WILL NOT BE RETURNING! read more

Went to Mr. Kim's new location, and it didn't smell like cats as mentioned in other reviews. I had an asymmetrical floor length sequined dress that I needed hemmed. Mr. Kim was very friendly and knowledgeable--he offered two different ways to hem it (cheaper and more expensive way). He charged under a $100 (for the hemming and fixing something on the neckline), which is much cheaper than when I've gotten my dresses hemmed at other local shops. I needed a custom tailor for something that I needed within the same week. I called a lot of places and the turn around time was 1-2 weeks. Magically, I found this spot and was so happy I did on Yelp. Not your usually cleaners building but definitely unique and intimate. Located in a decent area, limited parking so it's good to come when there's less traffic. Customer Service - Great communication, transparency and work was beyond excellent. My jacket was completed in a few days just as promisyeI will definitely come back in the near future. He made sure I left with a smile which I surely did. Absolute great experience!! I brought a dress in to have a zipper removed and hooks added as the replacement. I brought it in and in a week's time he had it ready for me. The seams were done beautifully and were very neat. In the picture where you see the opening is where the zipper used to be, so the dress has a completely new look thanks to the work of Mr. Kim. I came to Mr. Kim after reading rave reviews on Yelp, and I was not disappointed! I needed two pairs of jeans hemmed, which at the other shop nearby to which I normally go, would have been $40-50. I took the jeans to Mr. Kim, who made quick work of hemming them (they were ready two days later), and they fit perfectly. What's more, his prices are very reasonable for the area at $10 per pair for hemming. As others have said, there is definitely a pretty strong smell of cigarette smoke + cats in his home shop, to the point that I had to freshen up my jeans when I got them back to get the smell out. It wasn't terribly difficult, but I wouldn't necessarily bring a suit here as I would need to get it dry cleaned after having it altered. But on the whole, good value. read more

I got two pants altered here, one shortened and one shortened and tapered. Additionally, I had a suit jacket tapered in at the waist. For these services, it costed around 100$. Service took a little over a week. Kim did a wonderful job with my clothing and would highly recommend. He is indeed super busy but he definetly provides quality work for a pretty reasonable price. I took four shirts and a pair of pants here to be altered and the cost was $220.00. Luckily the people who made the clothes for me were footing the bill and not me! The clothes were tailored expertly and were ready on time for pickup. For an important garment I would definitely come back here to have an alteration done, but for anything else I might search out cheaper options. read more

Bottom line up front: Price= 10/10 Quality= 10/10 Service= 10/10 Price: I have been to many tailors in DC and Arlington and Mr. Kim is the best I have found on price and quality. I am looking at receipts right now from other tailors in the area who charged much more for the same service. i.e., taking up a pants hem was $10 at Mr. Kim's and $15 at another highly rated tailor in the capitol hill area (but his quality is better). Quality: I take my expensive work dresses, pants, etc. here all the time and he has never delivered anything short of perfect. He shortened the sleeves on my leather moto jacket with zippers (see picture) perfectly for an outrageously low price and you can't even tell they were tailored. Other tailors I called said they weren't sure if they could do it, and would have charged much more. Service: He always offers a quick turnaround. A couple times he offered a day or two without me even giving preference of pickup day. I came to pick something up and brought with me a dress that had a bad snag and he fixed it like magic in a minute or two while I waited. It has taken me a while to take the time to write this review; however, I would be remiss if I didn't. I have been going to Mr. Kim's shop for three years. I found him online after reading a couple of reviews and decided to give him a shot. I must tell you that Mr. Kim is a rockstar in tailoring. I have brought tons of clothes that needed the dandy touch. Mr. Kim exceeded all expectations. He knows my style, my size, my general aesthetic and he tends to every detail, very carefully. I have brought coats, blazers, sport coats, pants, shirts, T-shirts, polo shirts, and even sweaters to Mr. Kim and he is awesome in his execution. He even has taken the time to teach me about dimensions and what the general requirements are when it comes to modern fittings. Some of the highlights are a Versace leather jacket that required tapering of the shoulders and arm length. Excellent!!! He tailored a Michael Kors full length coat that required tapering of the waist, sleeves, etc. It is Excellent! It's by far my favorite piece. When I tell you he tailored the hell out of that coat....He TAILORED that coat and with perfection. I have taken two tuxedos. Excellent!!! I came here because of the great reviews! People have been touting the craftsmanship and prices. The tailor was very nice and the shop had free snacks! Chips and candy! This wasn't the first time I have had a new blazer's sleeves altered. So, I was familiar with the price point and quality that I was expecting. I was not impressed with the craftsmanship. It wasn't bad, although you could tell from the inside that he hadn't gone inside the lining, which seemed a little abnormal / sloppy. Additionally, the price wasn't cheaper than the place I had been going in Tenleytown. I called and asked how much it would be before I went, and he had mentioned $30. When I got there he said it would be $40 because of the kind of cuffs. They were standard cuffs, or maybe he could have mentioned the different price points on the phone. Mr Kim fixed a formal dress with a train that was way too long. Not an easy fix because it was sequined, but he did it by hand, strenghtened a back clasp for free and had it done in a few days. I would recommend him to anyone, and I'll definitely go back. Do want to warn Yelpers that you have to step through a bunch of front yard cats to get to his door -- but inside I didn't see any of the felines, which made me relax a little. Mr. Kim did an amazing job reworking a bridesmaids dress that arrived from an Etsy store completely wrong. His fee was significantly higher than I was expecting- but with it being DC and only given 2 weeks to alter almost every aspect of the dress, I decided it was fair enough. From the Yelp reviews, I trusted the end result would be what I wanted, and I was correct. The dress was perfect! I do have to say, communication was poor. I believe he said all of 2 words when I went in for him to take measurements. He did not take any of my information and he did not want to call when it was ready. Kim does an awesome job, he is very meticulous in his work, cuts no corners and offers suggestions on what needs to be done to look right (i.e. taper, make a slit, etc). Prices are reasonable and very important is that he is consistently on time. When he gives a date you can expect it to be done by then: very dependable guy. That being said, highly recommend suits, jackets, pants and anything else that needs alterations. I get many compliments on my jackets, suits, overcoats, and tuxedo. Have been going to Mr. Kim's since 2014. As others have said, he does great handwork and is one of the best tailors in D.C. but is also one of the most expensive tailors I've ever used, and his shop smells of cigarettes and cat urine. Mr. Kim did a good job on two suits. Several months later, when I returned with the suit I intended to wear to my wedding, Mr. Kim promised to have it ready in two weeks time. When I went in to pick the suit up on the day before the wedding (slightly more than two weeks since drop off), Mr. Kim informed me that it wasn't done and it would only be "one more week." I explained the situation but the best he could do was suggest I wear another suit to my wedding, which is exactly what I had to do, unfortunately. When I returned to pick up the finished suit one week later, he still charged full price. I've been searching for a reliable tailor ever since. read more

I'm convinced that Mr. Kim is DC's best tailor. I came in wary after a series of terrible tailors, one of whom really botched up my favorite (and expensive) Faconnable suit. Mr Kim miraculously brought it back from near death. Encouraged by his work, I brought in a couple of brooks brothers suits that were at least two sizes bigger than I needed.
