This review is long overdue. Please, please forgive me, Dr. John! I was referred to periodontist Dr. John from my dentist Dr. Curia decades ago. My first procedure was a root planing because my gums bled too easily. Dr. John was gentle, and I found his blue eyes back then to be comforting. Over a decade passed with my dentist annually reminding me that my gums were receding. In my 20's, I was told I had the gums of a 40-year-old. With no dental insurance, the work would be expensive, but I decided that I didn't want to leave the Bay Area without Dr. John doing my gum work because researching, choosing, and trusting a new periodontist/oral surgeon would be difficult for me. I signed up for a couple years of private Delta Dental PPO insurance, so I could get all the work done. I had two different gum graft procedures. The first one involved taking and grafting tissue from the roof of my mouth (autograft). The second one used cadaver tissue (allograft). The first surgery was more stressful and painful with a longer healing process with the area where the graft was taken feeling a bit funny and numb for awhile. It probably took 3 months for my mouth to feel normal again, which is typical. However, your gums look natural and as good as new after. That was along my upper gumlime near a canine tooth. The second surgery was a breeze given no tissue needed to be harvested from the roof of my mouth. Dr. John let me choose what music to listen to during the procedure, so I picked the fun West Side Story soundtrack, which we could both enjoy. Recovery was less than a month. Dr. John didn't waste any of the cadaver tissue, using it to build up the gums of neighboring teeth. The procedure helped the gums of 5 or 6 teeth. My gumline is not as covered up or attractive as the first autograft procedure, but autograft wasn't possible given the number of teeth/length of gumline involved. I would probably needed 2 areas of the roof of my mouth harvested or I would have needed to split it up into 2 separate procedures. If you can afford the recovery time and pain involved, you can do the autograft. Sigh, pain before beauty or beauty is pain...so true. My gumlines are now reinforced enough, so my teeth shouldn't fall out now. Thank you, Dr. John. Dr. John is an expert in his field. He has taught classes in specialized dental procedures, and I believe he represents one dental product company. He also has some dental freebies in his office, which you can try. I loved the Paradontax toothpaste sample. That stuff is miraculous...plaque/tartar just falls off your teeth. read more

Dr. John is the best dental professional I've ever encountered. After over 20 years under his watchful and empathetic care, I even consider him a friend. I was referred to him in my late 20s after finally getting a job with dental insurance and heading to a local dentist who suggested I needed the care of a periodontist. I met Dr. John at his original office and he walked me through a plan that would get me caught up and my gums healthier, even given all the damage I'd already done throughout college and my early career. From that point, we moved to maintenance and the occasional backslide, but Dr. John was there like a friend who cares about you. Unlike every other dental (and most medical) professionals, Dr. John cared about getting the best outcome that was possible given the human being. He knew I wasn't going to suddenly fix all my bad habits. He coached gently, with facts and encouragement. He wasn't there to judge and treat me like I was the world's most terrible person because I wasn't willing to commit to flossing after every single meal. He coached me to be better, but in doing it his way, we met in the middle somewhere and I (and my gums) were better for it. When I first got dental insurance, my dentist told me I may have a few years before a specific tooth fell out. Dr. John came to call this tooth "snaggletooth" and we worked together to keep it in my mouth as much as possible. Was that the right thing? Probably not. It certainly wasn't the aesthetic choice. But snaggletooth was important to me, and Dr. John did everything to help save it for as long as I was under his care. A few years ago, I left CA for TX and I can say that after the weather, Dr. John is the thing I miss most about California. I finally got snaggletooth removed yesterday and I'm planning on mailing it to Dr. John. It represents to me his immense success at maximizing patient outcomes...something that wasn't taught in a medical book, but takes a human being with great humanity to realize. -Chris read more

I just had my second of two procedures with Dr. John and although I've never posted a professional services review before, I want to commend Dr. John for his skill, professionalism, friendly demeanor, and unwillingness to pad the bill with extras. Plus, he has excellent taste in music. He uses a laser to perform periodontal surgery. I think it's more precise and less obtrusive than traditional surgery. [My late wife had it years ago and came away very traumatized.] His office staff is very friendly and helpful. He's got some crazy decor items that you won't see in other professional offices. And he's not going to sell you potions or devices or any other fear-inspired products that you'll desperately buy to try to keep your teeth. If I like him after paying his bill, he must be good. I was referred to Dr. John over 2 years ago, and I am so happy I went! I had been seeing a "family" dentist for years, which was a huge mistake. I am so meticulous about my teeth, imagine my surprise when I FINALLY switched dentists and the new dentist referred me to a periodontist! I was nervous and upset, to say the least, and it took me a few weeks to even place the phone call. Thank God it was Dr. John! He is an excellent periodontist and implant specialist! I saw Dr. John for an implant repair last week. I was assured by Dr. John's office staff that the procedure is not covered by my insurance. After a call to my insurance carrier I found out that Dr. John has contract with that carrier however the price that I was expected to pay, $1500 out of pocket, was way out of line with contracted price of $300!!!! Therefore Dr. John's office staff had not even had the courtesy to call and find out. This is absolutely unacceptable and I am in the process of filing a formal complaint with American Dental Association, California Board as well as with my insurance carrier for an investigation. It is truly disappointing that science and patient's health are compromised for profit. The sad part has been that her office knows the great deal of pain that I have been under. read more

I wish that Dr. John could be my regular dentist! (He's an oral surgeon.) I had to have some gum tissue removed so that my regular dentist could install a crown. No one likes having their mouth operated on, but if you need to have that kind of work done, this is the guy you want to see! I had some work done several years ago and it was almost a fun experience as they let you choose your cd and play music the whole time so you can focus on very pleasant things while your mouth is being rearranged. This is my first review on Yelp. I actually added the app, so I could compliment Dr. John and his staff immediately after my last procedure. I have been to his office quite a bit over the last year, so I can honestly say how pleased I am. The office staff has been beyond accommodating trying to fit within my schedule. I appreciate that they are always warm, smiling and friendly! They also communicated with my insurance prior to service, so I was clear what co pays would be due. I will admit I was a bit nervous going in. I know that makes dentists nervous, so I tried to hide that I was, but he knew! Lol. Dr. John and his assistant quickly put me at ease. They are quite funny together and kept me distracted through out my oral surgery. I am very thankful I found this Periodontist, because I have more dental work that needs to be completed. I only saw Dr. John briefly, as I was advised that it would be more appropriate for me to visit a general dentist, and not a periodontist, for routine cleanings and exams. I was though cautioned that past customers were charged very large unexpected out of pocket fees, not always necessarily required or supported by their insurance. I had such a great experience there because Dr. John explained to me everything that they were going to do for my procedure and then when he changed the plan he again told me the entire plan so I knew what to expect. I was not treated by Dr. John since I needed to have an implant removed that was an old type (from 7 years ago) and needed different instruments for removal. However, his office and Dr. John himself were great. They not only patiently answered my questions, but also gave me every piece of information that I could possibly want. They even sent a summary email of my options and the costs for treatment and followed up with me a week later to see if I had additional questions. Dr. John is very calm which is great when you find yourself in need of gum procedures and his offices staff are very kind. I will definitely return for any future periodontal needs. read more
