I've lived in OB 4-yrs now and keep my business local every chance I get. With that being said, I do that until a standard expectation (concerning alterations mine aren't high) is not met, and my last experience totally let me down and have already changed shops I go because of it. I took in a brand new $50 North Face (thin performance fabric material) hoody, from store to shop knowing I need the sleeves shortened. He had no hesitation he could do the job. I picked it up a week later and when I got home was stoked to try it on. **I have used him 5-6 other times for standard material items (denim/cotton etc) and been fairly pleased so felt no need to check shirt in-store.** This time the seams were further back then we agreed on and they weren't even close to parallel, and had 10-12 lines of sharpie marker that were not there upon drop-off. I immediately drove back, asked if he could fix the sewing errors. He said he could and didn't know how the marker lines got there but it didn't happen in-store. Corrections took a couple days, picked up & checked in store this time with him. All kinds of exposed holes from the removed seams, it was closer to the end but still not totally straight. Brought up the marker line topic again and he still denied anything to do with it. I took it elsewhere and they did a pretty good job, luckily it's a blue marker on blue shirt so doesn't stand out there bad but a $50 shirt quickly became $80 with extra alterations; but the holes obviously compromised the structural integrity and still have the marker issue. Reminded of the hassle each time I put it on. I do echo what everybody says, he is a very nice guy. I've been pretty happy with the jeans, shirts, shorts I've taken there before so I expected the same result with this. I looked the shirt over before taking it in so I would've noticed any sort of markings, which there were none. So as a PSA if you have performance/workout type fabric items be absolutely sure the machinery is equipped to do what you're expecting. read more

Just picked up my bridesmaid dress today, and it fits perfectly -- way better than I thought it could ever fit, actually. And I was a bit worried because when I tried it on for him a week ago to see what alterations to make, another customer came in, so he quickly marked some areas on the dress and that was it -- I was in and out in less than 5 minutes. I also brought in a pair of wedges with broken straps for him to glue back a few months ago -- I wear them all the time, and they're still intact. I told him I wanted to wear the pants that night (that's why I needed them done same day) and he pressed them for me without me asking. He said he wanted to make sure I looked nice tonight. Like all the other reviewers, I agree that Stephan's is a great local business. He's a nice guy who does great work and always goes the extra mile for you. One time I dropped off a really nice comforter for a cleaning, and then summer started and I promptly forgot about it... for THREE years! (Literally. I know that's ridiculous - I actually went on a year-long deployment in the middle!) Anyway, I just assumed that the comforter was gone forever, and I chalked it up to the ol' Idiot Tax rearing its ugly head. But I stopped into Stephan's just to check, and guess what? Not only was the comforter waiting for me wrapped in clean plastic, but it was sitting RIGHT NEXT to the counter. Like three feet from the register. Three YEARS later. That's crazy! Last week I realized that I'd be a great candidate for an episode of "Queer Eye For The Stragiht Guy" when the following conversation took place as I walked towards the laundry room with a new dress shirt. Danny's roommate: Dude, you should really get that dry-cleaned. Danny: What's dry cleaning? Ok so I was half joking. I know what it is, but I rarely use it because I always feel like I'm getting ripped off. Fashion really isn't my thing and I just don't know any better, so I consulted with a "Queer Eye" friend who confirmed. "Dude, get that shit to the cleaners!" That's when Yelp came in. The first place that popped up on my search was not only walking distance from my crib but all 5 star reviews. I walked in with a bundle of clothes and a pair of jeans to be tailored (also roommate noted and "Queer Eye" audition worthy) Two days later my gear was looking GQ and I quieted all of my style critical friends. It was about 50 bucks total, but for the amount of stuff I brought in apparently I got a steal. If you're like me and clothing is about as high on your priorities as a "meter maid appreciation party", you can trust these cleaners to touch up your threads. I came here on a recommendation from a friend of mine and am totally thrilled with the work this guy did! I needed my dress altered for my sisters wedding (I was the maid of honor, so it was pretty important). I had definite opinions about what I wanted fixed. He took a different approach and told me what HE would do to change it, and asked me if that was alright. I kinda had reservations, but figured he knew dressmaking better than I. And he was right. It only took a few days, but when I got the dress back.....it was PERFECT! He took in the sides, reinforced the straps, and somehow made it so I seemed 'perkier'...if you know what I mean. And it was under $30! (and was ready in just a few days!) I don't have too much need for alterations or tailoring....but next time I do, I will be back here for sure!!! I don't take many items to the dry cleaner (too much effort) so only very delicate or very dirty items make it. I decided to try this place out because it's close to home and I was very pleased. I brought in a silk shirt with a mysterious stain that had been there for an indeterminate amount of time. He warned me that the shirt might be damaged but I figured why not? Who wants to where a shirt with a weird stain anyway? It turned out like new. I was totally impressed. I also brought in a pair of heels to get new tips and they came back all shiny and wonderful. I have tried many cleaners in SD and he is by far my favorite. He has altered jeans and slacks, cleaned my "fancy" wear and fixed heels and straps on shoes that I thought were beyond repair. Granted he has a person he sends the shoes out to for fixing but the work gets done with the same care and special attention he puts into his sewing and cleaning. I have had him clean a shirt twice (at no extra cost) when it wasn't up to his standard of cleanliness. On a personal note, Stephan is very pleasant and happy. Take 1: Walk in and then turns around "Stephan." (You think to yourself is this guy for real?) It is like a scene right out of Zoolander meets 'Queer Eye for the Straight Guy' - "Hello (in a high pitched voice), how may I help you?"... But slowly, for some reason, you start to warm up to him and get sucked in. Stephan is just generally a really nice guy who tires to help people (by making them look better!) I need to get some jeans hemmed & patched. The hemming was $18 per pair of jeans & the patches were only $8... This is steep but I have been told that his work is well worth the price so I went for it. I came back 3 days later (YES, that is right, I said THREE DAYS - not three weeks, or 3 months but 3 days) and all three items were taken care of. And again, it was done with a smile (somewhat of a creepy smile but a smile). The GOOD: STEPHAN is worth it - drive to OB and get your items hemmed here! He has high quality work, a great personality, & does his work FAST. The BAD: The prices are a little steep but if you go to a denim store for jeans, you are going to pay close to this anyways... The UGLY: OB during daylight... Try to come right before sunset, pick up your items, and them head down Newport Ave for Happy Hour. Bottom Line: This guy knows what he is doing & he does it well. He'll perfectly alter the clothes, and the best part is that you won't be able to tell whether he has done any work or if the clothes was made to fit me perfectly from the beginning.
