Fantastic Portuguese style bbq. Dare I say tastier and juicier than Mac Whorter, my favorite in Newark. Chicken and pork rib combo were fantastic from the meat to the sides. The salad I ordered could use a lil pizazz too but I've learned this about Portuguese fast food bbq in general, its about the meats, preparation, not so much the rest. Rice and beans lacked pizzazz but hot sauce and vinegar with some salt restored the flavor. Tree leche dessert and a decaf cappuccino for desert was...is...fantastico as well! Very rustic and authentic, wow. Cinnamon in the cappuccino was awesome. Unduly harsh reviews did not reflect valid in contrast to my fantastic dine in experience. Seriously, 2 stars? 1? Puhleez. And for what, soggy fries from take out? Don't judge N.J. places in the middle of really nowhere on the take out, get off your butt and meet the delightfully friendly Stephanie who works very hard to make this place this good. I ordered from them,, the bbq combo half order and garlic shrimp and I was highly disappointed. There was barely any food in the box. The ribs were so burned and dry.The fries were barely cooked. The garlic shrimp was not closed properly so the garlic sauce was in the bag and I was only left with the shrimp. Considering the price I paid to have it delivered (which totaled $30+), these people should be ashamed of themselves to be delivering that to people. Ordered from here for the first time today and although the food wasn't horrible, it sure wasn't great. The chicken; it tasted like it hadn't been fully defrosted before being cooked. Or, maybe it was and it was just not good quality. The chicken was way too chewy (at least the piece I tried). On the brighter side, the flavoring was excellent. The ribs; although flavored well, they were either overcooked or had been sitting there for a while. One of the reasons I order bbq is because the food usually moves quickly and usually tastes fresh. Not this time. Portuguese sausage; I was expecting more of a classic chorizo and found this sausage to taste more Brazilian style. It was still good and for $10 (or $11) bucks, they gave a fairly large link. Sides; I paid $5 for an extra side salad that was great. Fries were good, vegetables were delicious. Salad portion was fair and other sides were generous. We ordered around 8PM, so not sure if this has to do with the poor experience this time around. Very dissatisfying!! It was bad, so bad my Frenchie was sad.... Prices go up and the portion size goes down. I order from here and know what to expect, the food isn't the best or even close to it but its near by and they deliver. I have always thought this place was cheap on the portion size but this LAST time I ordered I was shocked. The ribs were smaller than a normal size baby back ribs. Such a pitty!! It was a complete waste and was not enough so I ended up stepping out to pick up something else to eat for us. Dessert was the best part of the meal, and it was a pre-sliced cut from a grab-and-go box from the fridge in front. Normally the marinated olives are amazing. Tonight I think they came straight out of a can. The broiled cod was incredibly salty, the empanadas were cold inside, and the shrimp cakes were fried bread shells with a nondescript paste inside. The shrimp was only slightly overcooked but had good flavor. It would have been nice if there was some kind of avviso that this shrimp is served with shell on (peel and eat). This is my third or fourth time here (my friend likes the place; personally I would have never came a second time) and it's never been great, but always (mediocre) okay. The meat was pretty much flavorless, the chicken was dry, we ordered 2 big family platter, spent a good amount of money on this place hoping for that reason we would get great quality food.. very much mistaken. we got boiled potatoes, fries and Veggies (along with the meats) just tasted as if they had everything frozen and reheated the things in the microwave.. maybe going there will be a whole different experience but it's not like they took forever to delivery it and that's the reason it was bad... it came fast and it was still flavorless. Waste of money, $27 for two tough beef ribs and less than half a chicken and a small portion of rice and black beans. This is the priciest bbq combo in the area but gives a smaller portion. And the quality does not make up for the price. First and last time I will be ordering from here. This is a great Stephanie's spot! Nothing to complain about! Service is really great! Place is always neat, clean & doesn't smell like grease like so many bbq places that you can smell the dirty old oil and stuff. They always have the grill full and pumping! Stephanie's BBQ is a place very local to me, so my family would order from here when we would have surprise visitors to satisfy their hunger. The choice of food here has a decent variety, which includes a bunch of fish, pork, beef, and chicken platters. Most dishes come either in "1/2" or "full" orders, and can come with either fries and rice, potatoes and vegetables, or rice and beans. The prices range between around $9-$10 for 1/2 orders to $13-$18 for full orders. I would say that a full order can satisfy approximately 2 to 4 people, depending how hungry everyone is, so it is pretty cheap. The quality of the food can vary at times. I have never had a problem with the actual meat or fish but maybe 1 or 2 times the rice wasn't cool ideally, as it tasted a bit overcooked. The place itself isn't really a huge place to eat-in so I suggest just ordering for take-out. Delivery is an option too, but considering I live nearby, they take a longer time then they should to deliver, so I would just pick it up myself. read more

I understand that by the mere look of the place you're not supposed to come in with 5 star restaurant expectations. But coming from a ghetto background, I know how to appreciate good food from creepy looking places. This place had decent food, prices were ok, and the place inside is hideous. I went at the end of January and there were dried up poinsettias on the tables. The tablecloths were literally brown (originally blue) from all the time they've spent on the tables unchanged. We had to get up to get our own drinks from the fridge, our own napkins and straws. The place definitely did a lot more take out service because we were 4 of 6 people in the entire place. The order of ribs and chicken was good, well cooked but just a little bland. The price was decent and a large enough plate for two. I probably would've given this place 4 stars if it wasn't for the fact that down a few blocks there is an amazing BBQ place with better prices better food, and better service. Nice hidden gem. The Cod fish cakes are dope! The chicken and rib combo is nice big portion. We love leftovers and brown bagging for lunch! We also go a small side of veggies and black beans. All of this for a whopping total of less than $24 bucks. I love it! The parking outside can prob fit 6-10 cars and it does look like diner but don't let it fool ya! This restaurant is good. Not great but good. They usually have steamed vegetables in most orders. I wish they would drained it better because after ordering multiple times there is always this pool of water on the bottom of the containers. The parking here is awkward. You can opt for street parking. The parking lot doesn't allow for you to really back out of the spot unless you go into the street, but it's such a busy corner. The prices here are a bit higher than other bbq places, but they are close to home. I mean it's a good place, but it is also forgettable. read more

We just ordered (and finished eating!) from Stephanie's BBQ for the first time, after hearing positive reviews of it from some of the other families in our area. We were not disappointed. And for take-out it was very good quality, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We got the chicken/pork rib combo with rice and beans, side order of plantains , and 2 empanadas, one chicken and one beef. It was all tasty and plentiful. The plantains and pork ribs were particularly delicious, and we really liked the spicy sauce that came with the empanadas. I rated this place three stars instead of two for the timely manner in which my food arrived. The portions were fine, but it depended on what portion you're speaking of. For example, I ordered bbq chicken with beef ribs. Would you like to know how many ribs I received? If you guessed 1 then you were correct. Meanwhile I had four pieces of chicken beside it. I feel as though I was ripped off. I ordered steak and chicken for my other order and got the saddest piece of steak you'd ever seen in your life, delivered with a beautiful hole in the middle. The beans, rice, and vegetables had no flavor. It needed a little salt. In addition, the beef rib (1) I ate had an abundance of salt. I could've taken some of the salt off of it to season the beans and rice. I'm sorry, but for my first order, I expected more. So, I won't be back. read more

I moved to Nutley a year ago and had two great meals then the following half a dozen or so meals were erratic in quality. I am TOTALLY shocked that people gave this place one star!! I have ordered from Stephanie's III on Centre St MANY times. I have never had anything less than a 4-star experience. I have never dined IN the restaurant, so I cannot comment on the ambiance. It looks like a classic retro NJ diner from the outside. Their food is wonderful, though. I grew up in Kearny, and we had 2 REALLY good churrasco places nearby. I have always loved the chicken, and pretty much kept to that with rice. That is still my go-to. I usually order the chicken and then some other stuff. My family LOVES the ribs. We also get the sausage (chourico assado). If I have a big crowd, I like to order beans, potato salad, etc. The potato salad we have gotten has always been a larger portion than they describe in the menu, BTW. I also ordered the bacalhau house style once. It was beautiful (and very large)! I cannot recall other entrees that we have gotten. These are our favorites. I always order some garlic sauce as well. I discovered how wonderful this was when we got the clams in garlic sauce as an appetizer once. If I don't order that appetizer, I always make sure to get some of the sauce as an add-on. I am thrilled that Stephanie's Barbecue III is close to my home. I highly recommend this place!!! read more

Stephanie's is one of our top 3 favorite local delivery spots. I don't understand the negative reviews. We have ordered from Stephanie's dozens of times and have never had a problem. I always find the person taking my order over the phone to be very friendly and patient. The food is consistently fresh and delicious. The favorite dish in our house is the steak ribs with rice and fries. The sweet plantains are pretty amazing too. The serving sizes are very generous. Overall, a great take out option. read more
