Suzanna is an inspired GENIUS when it comes to creating and crafting whimsical and magical designs. Suzanna is a dream to work with - a true artist and completely laid back. I wish I could throw more big events just to have an excuse to work with her again. My advice is to let Suzanna choose whatever local flowers are in season at the time of your event. That way you will get the most beautiful, original arrangements at the best price. Choosing your wedding vendors is not unlike being selected as captain during gym class and then picking the best classmates to play on your team, you're essentially doing what you can to assemble an all-star squad. You're selecting teammates to work alongside to produce an amazing and successful outcome. The thing is, it's not just about talent and skill. Like a good teammate, you also want rapport. Which brings me to Zara from Stems Brooklyn. Zara was the second event florist that my now husband and I met with during the vendor selection process. When the list of "recommended florists" from our venue lacked a certain vibe that appealed to us, we turned to Yelp (surprise, surprise!) as a resource to aid in our research and selection for the florals. We knew we wanted someone with talent and excellent feedback/a good track record, but we also wanted someone local to Brooklyn. While our first florist meeting was fine, it wasn't until we met Zara that we were reminded of attributes like rapport and enthusiasm! She genuinely cared about our special day and actually wanted to work with us (you'd be surprised how few vendors express these sentiments). While I very much appreciated her superb organization and attention to detail, she didn't make us feel like we were just clients with whom she was running through a check list, she made us feel like good friends whose happiness was her priority. My husband was particular about our floral concept and she listened intently and provided thoughtful proposals and responses. He described his desire for both high and low centerpieces in the reception space to provide depth but was worried about the use of trumpet vases with hydrangeas, so popular with other floral designers and events. Zara pulled up an elevated piece she made previously, and our jaws dropped. The texture, color, arrangement, even the vessel/vase were stunningly perfect. The caliber of her prior work, her ability to listen and connect and her general friendliness and enthusiasm stayed with us during our walk home and it was a very quick conversation to agree to hire Stems immediately. Their prices were above what we budgeted (they build in a well-deserved design fee) but absolutely every dollar was worth the beauty that Zara and Stems created for our wedding. We received innumerable compliments on the floral designs on our special day from our wedding party, friends, family, guests, even the staff at the venue! We were absolutely elated with the final products! It really was my husband's dream come true, this was so important to him from the beginning stages of planning and it was wonderful to see him so thrilled. Then, when Zara presented me with my bridal bouquet I was speechless. Unlike my husband, my vision was unspecific and hard for me to pinpoint. I shared the photos of my wedding dress with her during our pre-wedding consultation and she realized immediately what she wanted to create for me. I never knew exactly what I wanted until I saw the gorgeous bouquet Zara created for me, it was perfect. Our total package included a bridal bouquet, 6 bridesmaids' bouquets, an especially large boutonniere for a very special groom, 6 groomsmen boutonnieres, 3 corsages for our mothers', 2 additional boutonnieres for our fathers, 10 low placed centerpieces, 10 elevated centerpieces and flowers for our wedding cake (photos to come!) Amidst perfecting our centerpieces and styling our cake, Zara and Stems staff were also so helpful day of with handing out everyone's respective flowers, especially pinning those gorgeous boutonnieres on the gentleman. Trust "Stems." I needed to send a birthday arrangement to my daughter. With no idea of who to trust and living far away, I did a quick online search and found Stems was near her apartment. The order form asked me for some idea of what I was looking for, so I said, "Simple and seasonal." The "simple" idea was to limit the environmental impact of the arrangement; I didn't want exotic stuff sourced from far away. Stems made a lovely arrangement featuring autumn blossoms. Investigated online options for a floral arrangement for a wake. Hate the typical heart-shape arrangements. Stems looked like they where a creative shop near by. I called and gave them a $200 budget and asked that they just don't use any carnations. I was stunned when we arrived at the wake and saw a small, unattractive, unbalanced arrangement with some flowers that seemed past their prime. This was a group purchase and they left off 2 names and misspelled 3 others! Incredibly embarrassing. When I called to complain, the owner was somewhat unapologetic- she begrudgingly apologized for the omission/misspellings but said that she thought the arrangement was fine. My friend and I completed Stems' Floral Arranging Workshop this fall. As soon as we spotted the store front, we knew that we had found the right place. The window was full of gorgeous hanging air plants and inside we saw stunning arrangements of unique flowers (not a single rose or carnation in sight). We arrived a little early so drank at Sycamore's Bar which is happily situated in the same space, behind the flower shop. We were amazed by how many people were there. It was a quiet, chilly night in Ditmas Park and we didn't see many folks on the street. Turns out they were all drinking at Sycamore's. Our class started exactly on time and because we were a small group, we all got to know each other pretty quickly. My friend and I were there for research purposes and our fellow flower arrangers were skilling up for an upcoming wedding. Instead of hiring a florist, the girls were going to create their own centerpieces using pieces from the Flower District. Madineyah was our talented and helpful instructor! As a novice flower arranger with an ulterior motive, I was full of silly questions but Madineyah patiently answered them all. Turns out our instructor is also a life coach which explains why she is so good with people. First we were given the insider tips for preserving your fresh flowers longer. Next we watched a demonstration and then it was our turn. Floral arranging is very much a learn by doing skill so there were plenty of adjustments happening. By the end of class, I had consumed two tasty cocktails and created my own unique, front-facing floral arrangement. Of the four arrangements, not a single one looked the same. Found this store on yelp. Being a person who doesn't like talking on the phone I found the online ordering process was quick and easy. We ordered boutonnieres for my family to wear to church. The order was placed on Saturday and were ready for pick up on Sunday so it was just a quick in and out process. Was a little disappointed due to the fact that some of the flowers were not fully opened and started wilting. But other than that everything was good. read more

She's so good at working with you on price.  I don't know too much about flowers and didn't know really what I wanted. When we first went in to sign our contract and meet with her, she helped me come up with a theme... "Tamed wilderness". I loved it!  She sized me up for a bouquet, and then let me keep it!!!!  What!!?!???  So nice!!!!  Now, that's service!!! She did our whole wedding from the bouquets, boutonnières, center pieces, corsages and cocktail hour pieces. We had anemones, succulents, dusty millers, ranunculas, David Austin roses and thistle. They were beautiful!  The bridesmaids bouquets came out wonderfully and complemented their mint dresses perfectly!  I would 1000% recommend stems!  In this wedding world where people overcharge and under deliver, I feel like Suzanna was the most approachable and made flowers fun and not stressful!  She did an amazing job! We just got this amazing bouquet of flowers from these people. I have to say it is just not your average flower arrangement. It was for a friends birthday and each flower was vibrant and saturated with color. Normally when you get an arrangement or small bouquet your looking at many of the same flowers sort of put together with some filler. This is not what your getting with Suzanna's flowers at all. Your getting a focal point, something she wants to highlight, and then the 'filler' is an entire gorgeous arrangement of color and shape that balances an entire work of art. Highly recommended. I would not pay again for just some nice flowers in a bunch. Oh and Suzanna herself is kinda awesome, we totally geeked out on the science of plant photosynthesis for a while, she clearly knows her stuff. read more

When it became obvious that DIY centerpieces were going to be stressful and unrealistic to make myself, I saw Stems' lovely portfolio and gave them a call. They were very accommodating of my limited budget. Tip: to save money, I provided some general colors/ideas, and let the florists choose whatever blooms looked good and were seasonal.
