So, I heard about the changes at Steak 'n Shake and I'm all about second chances, plus I'm really into making America healthy again. So I swung by the drive-thru, grabbed a grass-fed, grass-finished steak burger, and some of their tots that are now cooked in beef tallow. I could instantly tell the difference with the tallow-cooked tots, they were super tasty. The tots seemed a bit smaller, but still delicious. The burger patty was definitely better than their old ones and the pickles were fresh. Overall, I feel the improvements were very satisfying and I applaud shake and steak for the effort. Of course, I totally forgot the golden rule I should know by now: always check your order before you leave. I got all the way home and they'd forgotten my chili mac, which made me pretty sad. I use to love this Steak 'n Shake location. I really wish they'd hire more staff, bring back wait staff, and clean the place up! I had to ask for napkins (all the dispensers were empty) & I had to use a few to clean a table, as they were all dirty. We sat, a few booths away from the trash cans. Before I could finish my meal, an employee came out to empty them. The smell was horrendous, when he pulled the cans out. It didn't look like the inside of the cabinet, holding the 2 trash cans, had been cleaned in a very long time. I had to stop eating & leave. I ordered a single steak burger with cheese. It was so flat, half the burger was hanging outside the bun. Because it was so flat, it got cold very quickly. This restaurant needs a lot of improvement, before I'll return. read more

Don't ever order for online pickup here, they don't start making your food until you're inside, then every type of order - window, for here, delivery etc get their food before you and even people after you're there get it beforehand, waited 45 minutes for a simple 2 burger and 2 fries order and it still got messed up. read more

The new district manager in the area actually seems to be doing great things. How do I know this? I spoke with her a month or so ago when I called corporate to complain about another Steak 'n Shake here in Jacksonville and she returned my call. She had recently taken over the Jax area and told me improvements would be coming soon. Seems as though she was true to her word. The last couple of times we ate at this particular Steak 'n Shake, we had less than good experiences, so we didn't go back for a while. After speaking with her, we decided to give it another shot and I'm glad we did. Service has been really good. The servers have been much more attentive. Orders are correct, drinks are being kept refilled, and we aren't left to sit at the table forever needing things like utensils and extra napkins because we are checked on frequently. Great job, guys! The burgers have been great. Not only have they been quite tasty, but they are now being put together properly and neatly. No more grease all over the tops of the buns (that was really starting to irritate me). They have quite a large selection of $3.99 specials which include various burgers, hot dogs, and even chicken fingers (all are served with fries). Great value! I haven't been to the drive-thru since the new district manager took over, so I can't speak for that experience. I hope it's as good as the experiences we've had dining in. read more

DO NOT EAT HERE! I went through the drive through and am glad i am very observant. The car in front of me received a bag of food and I saw them give it back to the person at the window, who just sat it to the side. After a couple of exchanges (looked like money & drinks) and about 5 minutes later, the car received another bag. When I pulled up the person at the window repeated my order and gave me our drinks. She then handed me a bag. It did not feel warm at all so I asked her if it was the bag the car in front of me had given her back. She said yes (thank you for being honest!). I said I did not want anything that someone else had been given. Totally unsanitary! She said they changed bags. I asked for my order to be freshly made. She closed the window and turned around. A minute later she opened the window and asked me to pull up to the start of the sidewalk, which I did. Just a couple of minutes later a different lady came out and handed me a bag. I asked if the food had been freshly made and she said yes. I grabbed a fry out of one box - stone cold. I grabbed a fry out of the other box - stone cold. I picked up the hamburgers and both had no heat coming from them. I parked my car and went inside. I asked for a manager - someone else came up. i told her the food was cold and I wanted freshly made food. The manager YELLED at me to lower my voice. I'm sorry, I generally speak up so people can hear me, especially when music is playing. They would not give me food, the manager said she would not serve me. I asked why and she began ranting at me about how I came in and threw the bag of food at her associate (I did NOT!), and that they didn't have to take that. The man cooking hamburgers was egging her on. He finally told the manager to just give me a refund. After asking a couple of times, about 10 minutes later the manager brought me a slip showing a refund and said I should get it in about 45 days, I said, What? 45 days. She said yes, maybe, it was a corporate thing. I looked at the receipt and it wasn't for the full amount so I mentioned that. The manager said corporate would take care of it. I called my credit card company and disputed the charge since I did not receive the food I ordered. Giving a patron food that another patron has touched, even if it was a bag, is unsanitary! I do not know what the person in the car has touched and then touched that bag. I'm sure the person supposedly switching bags, who had to touch the bag, did not wash their hands and touched the fries and hamburger thus spreading germs. I did not deserve the rash of crap the manager and her cook gave me. If you go to this establishment, BEWARE! They all need re-training in safety steps (re-do serve safe certifications!) read more

I love Steak 'n Shake and I love their coupons (found in newsprint coupon flyers in the mailbox). Their prices are already really great and the coupons just make it even better. We came here during holiday rush, and even though they were very busy, the young ladies and gents working here were hustling (and the drive thru was moving as well). We walked in the door, and were seated in minutes at a clean booth (our choice), even though the place was almost packed to capacity. The waitress was super savvy and familiar with the coupon deals, so we had no difficulty ordering. (We even rearranged our seating order, due to a lefty child, and the waitress had no problem remembering who ordered what. LOL I've seen more seasoned pros get flustered from a move like that.) Everything came out from the kitchens promptly. First the chili, hot and delicious (best "fast food" chili ever, btw). The burgers arrived as soon as we were finished and the dirty bowls and full plates were exchanged like magic. Everything was exactly as ordered, cooked properly and delicious. We tried the new holiday milkshakes as well, and they did not disappoint. In fact, my only complaint about the whole experience is an old one - the milkshakes only come in one size. I always wish they had a smaller one because I feel guilty at not being able to finish a whole one. LOL Anyway, we did not see the problems others have encountered here. The waitstaff were all very young, but were nothing but polite to us and other tables that we observed. The reason why i order or go here is when my friends from another state visits. They don't have a Steak n Shake where they live. Service is always slow and sloppy when dining inside. Now with Covid, I ordered delivery with Door Dash and it took close to an hour to make before the driver even picked up. Food was cold and fries rubbery. Best steak and shake in town! Steak in shake has always been the last resort drunk night fast food spot for me based on past experiences. BUT THIS STEAK AND SHAKE is the first choice when I'm on this side of town looking to cheat on my diet. The food is always fresh, fast and delicious, the staff is always friendly and warm as well. Fast forward to today, this place has done a complete 180. Inside was super clean & the staff gave amazing service. No employees yelling or getting into a screaming match (unlike the last time I was here about a year ago). So I was pleasantly surprised by the warm greeting. We were seated without asking our drink order and it took several minutes for anyone to even come to our table. Drink refills were almost non-existent and we sat for quite a while waiting on plates to be cleared even though they were very quick to bring the check. Maybe all of the times I've been here, I've gone during their non-peak hours because I really have no complaints. The service was usually pretty fast and the food was to my liking. I order the same thing most of the time. I usually go inside to eat and my burger & fries are practically sitting in front of me before I can decide if I want to have a strawberry milkshake afterwards. This location is better than the Fleming Island location because there I HAVE walked out for not getting any food after a 45 minute wait. I blame the inability to manage peak hours at the drive-thru for that wonderful experience. I have eaten at this Steak n Shake on two occasions and as it has been a while since my last visit, I was hesitant to share my advice, but since my lovely wife talked me into writing reviews, I figured it would be a good idea to play catch up and share my opinion even if it's a little outdated. My first visit to this restaurant was with my wife and well over a year ago, but the overall experience (what I remember) was good. The food and service was good enough to reel me back in for a second go. This time I was on the way to visit my wife in the hospital and needed a quick meal, so I decided to use the drive-thru. I ordered a Frisco Melt and cheese fries, simple enough right? Wrong! They somehow managed to burn the meat, not melt the cheese (It's called a melt for a reason right?) and forgot the cheese on the fries. Well, seeing as how I was starving and didn't dare take my food back for fear of having any unwanted special toppings added to my food, I ate. As expected, the Melt was terrible, but again, being hungry, I choked it down and proceeded on to the cheese-less cheese fries, hoping against hope that the fries would be tasty, but alas, they were break your teeth crunchy. At first I thought there were just a few crunchy taters in the bunch, but upon further inspection, I realized that pretty much all of the fries were ruined. I decided it best to trash the rest of the fries and eat something else later. So, I have decided to give this Steak n Shake two stars, only because my first experience wasn't bad. read more

Very rude young people work here. I went in and ordered to go. I sat and waited and when I received my food I was missing three drinks. The cashier saw me standing there for 5 minutes and she refused to come up and ask me what the problem was after she kept looking at me. I finally just left without drinks that I paid for. Ordered a couple burgers and chicken fingers. And what a mistake. It took 20 minutes waiting for our food thinking the drive thru would be quicker. The burgers are all mashed up and pickles shoved on the burgers to cover up the chopped up pieces of meat. The chicken strips were so hard they were not edible. The fries were old and cold like they just forgot to give us the food. The Buffalo we received was used, it had food particles and was half way gone. I will notify health department and corporate about this. The burgers were all mashed up like they used them as stress balls. I will never ever return to this sad excuse for a steak and shake. Ada dollar - night store manager is disrespectful and rude. Takes forever to get food out, and acts as if it's a hassle to do her job and serve customers. Gets frustrated with rewards (I've visited multiple times and always have issues with her) gentlemen cooking the food is cross contaminating his gloves with counter items and personal items, as well as rubbing his beard while handling food and it not being wrapped up. Higher up needs to take over. I drive to San Jose just to avoid this nasty location with unkept workers. read more
