So, they were probably 25% capacity and I sat there for 45 minutes watching people that came in after me get their food. Steak 'N Shake has gone way way down hill to once compared to its former glory! It's just a depressive feeling inside with everything trying to be automated except if you choose to go to a route of the cashier and not kiosks. The menu has drastically decreased to its bare bone classic staples and goal of speed has taken over. Everything came out fast and hot but it wasn't as good as it used to be to be. Over the last year it seems to really have gone flip side with this location specifically. Stopped for lunch while traveling from St. Louis - I've had Steak n'Shake many times in Central Illinois and have always loved it. The steak burger was delicious -cooked perfectly and the tomato/lettuce was all fresh. Was surprised that my favorite restaurant chili was decidedly different than I grew up with. Steak and Shake as a whole is a dying franchise. Most locations are run down and the food is nothing special. This location stands out as what the franchise should be in this market. It's clean, the people are friendly and most importantly the food is good. I ordered the chili five way and the pasta was perfect. Usually most other locations over cook the pasta into mush. The burgers came out quickly and were good. The onions and pickles were sliced a little funny but fresh. I wish this franchiser luck. The location isn't the greatest. It's behind a truck stop and truckers aren't the greatest customers anymore. We don't have that extra money like we use to. Thank you for a good experience. read more

Things they are a changing. I was so happy to see a sign for (in door dining now available!). However, it was disappointing to see how much Steak n Shake has changed. I had heard they were making big changes, but I didn't think it would be this severe. They no longer have the bean pots, salads or the main thing that made Steak n Shake stand out from the crowd...real China and silverware. There aren't any servers either. They take your order at the counter. Then they call out your number when it's ready and you go get it. Ugh. In fact, it's set up exactly like Freddy's hamburger joint. This all makes me very sad, since I grew up going to Steak n Shake. But, it's a strange time to be alive and to survive we must roll with the punches. The new design is okay, everyone working was super nice. The place was squared away and clean. The food was great and tasted even better then before. The fries especially, they were nice and crispy. We were in their drive-thru today, around 2:45 p.m. and ordered the frisco melt meal, and the southwestern bbq meal. The total was $19+, got my sandwich and it was literally like it was dipped in oil, like a soggy grilled cheese sandwich, there was no way I could eat this, so I politely go through the drive-thru to return it and was treated horribly, my receipt said Kelsey on it...so when I tell them I want my money back, they ask why, and then tell me to pull up to the window. Three women came to the window, one of them rolling her eyes and trying to stare at me all confrontational like, while the other woman said, while giggling, "That's how our Frisco melts are!"... maybe there...but just look at these pics and you tell me if you're eating this?? So then the one staring at me says we can't take that back in here, you'll have to go throw it away, then a manager came forth asking if I'd eaten the fries.. I hadn't taken not one bite and told them twice that I really wanted them to go ahead and have it back so they could see it, so the manager said, "Yeah, give it back." I gave the food back, they gave me my money back, but they were very confrontational and rude about it. It was a very unprofessional experience, it was like they took it personal because I was dissatisfied with my food and wanted to return it the same way that I had received it, having 4 employees come to the window to stare at me and act like I was ridiculous for not wanting to eat this crap that I PAID FOR and acting like I have no right to be upset that for my $, I received gross, disgusting, subpar food. My wife and I purchased 2 orders of the No 1 Original double meat burgers with fries and a onion rings and sodas at 4:53 pm on 2/22/23, bill was for $15.47. My wife's fries were stale and cold. Not a hint of warmth. They were kind to replace them with a fresh cooked batch. The burgers were ok, the onion rings fine. My wife noticed a "Share Your Thoughts" with a code to give feedback and receive a FREE milkshake after 4 pm. I went online with my phone and completed a "Top Box" reply. That means despite the cold fries, I was giving them a top rating. On completing the survey, they sent me an email with a code -- IJGTE9 Since we planned to check out their shakes, we took the code to the counter to get my wife a free shake, I was going to order another for myself. The counter girl called the manager, who told my wife she'd do it, but their system doesn't recognize the code! I showed them the email with the code. They are holding our receipt with the code written on it. They said they couldn't honor it! They are acting like we're cheating them! I ordered my shake, and when my wife heard it would be over $5!!! she said never mind. She asked to forget it and requested our receipt back. The moron tried to say they had to keep it! We were driving to Canton, IL and decided to stop at this Steak 'n Shake location to get a quick bite to eat. We were slightly amazed at the new sign because we've never seen one before nor the new restaurant design- inside and out. We went inside to order instead of the drive thru and was immediately helped at the register. I didn't really know what I wanted so it took a little long for me to look over the menu but the cashier was very patient with me. She helped me through each question I had and rang in our order with all of our modifications. I sat by the bar waiting for our to go food to be done and just looked around to see the interaction between the waitresses and customers and also management. The manager was actively helping out customers when lines were getting long, she even came up to me to check on everything as I was waiting, asked me where I was heading for thanksgiving, just little things that left a great impression. Not only was I impressed with the cleanliness of the restaurant and excellent customer service, but the food I got from this location was by far the best steak 'n shake meal I've ever had. Steak & Shake has been through a lot of turmoil the last few years with many stores closing. But it seems like they have a new business model and are coming back with a lot of stores reopening. It's all about good food and service and this store on our visit got it right. The burgers and fries were as good as ever but the menu is cut way back from the menus expansion of a few years ago. Good service and everything was spotless. We always try to hit them once when traveling through this part of the country for old time sake and we weren't disappointed. read more

A beautifully done Steak n Shake modeled in a throwback theme. The food was awesome and the staff was outstanding. Rhonda, at the cash register, welcomed us like we were family. We were passing through IL coming from St. Louis, where most of these restaurants have closed, and we were excited to stop. My daughter, two little grand daughters and I sat at the counter awaiting our food and had delightful conversation with Rhonda. We watched as she greeted customers by name! So there we were: my fiancé and I completely Shell shocked from the garbage can of America, known as St. Louis. As we barreled down the freeway we realized that in our haste we hadn't eaten anything since the evening prior. It was as if the heavens opened up and God himself took charge of the driving and brought us to this Steak and Shake. I had the truffle burger and my wife to be a simple cheeseburger with fries. Chili Mac Supreme has been my Steak N Shake favorite for years. This store has changed my mind. I ordered it twice on two different visits. First time, there was not enough chili to even color the spaghetti, and the cheese topping was absent. Server asked if I would like more sauce. I said yes please. She brought a small half cup of something very similar to ketchup. I asked for a manager and asked if they had changed to chili mac supreme. She told me they had not, and everything was standard. My Wife had it a week later at a different store, and Lo and behold, it was exactly what we were used to. I gave it another shot a couple of weeks later and there was little improvement, other than a bit of the cheese topping was present. My wife ordered extra chili for $1 and got half of a small plastic cup of chili. Went back to the Alton store again and got exactly what we were expecting. This store has ruined Chili Mac Supreme for us. It's just not the same without the toppings. read more
