It's exactly what it's supposed to be. Everything fresh, fries great, the staff was pleasant but they don't say a word unless you flag them down. It's different but it works. I do not eat fast food very often but after having an issue with Burger King, I went to steak 'n shake and it is now our go to for burger and fries. The food and the prices are very good! Fries are amazing and were not greasy, which can be an issue for us. Shakes are terrific! The chicken tenders are also very good. Tonight's meal at Steak N Shake was a default meal. This means, it was late, I was driving, and I didn't want McDonald's. This location was open late due to it being in a college town, so I ventured off the highway for a bit hoping for something better than the Golden Arches. When I arrived the location was well lit and had an ample parking area. The drive thru line appeared to be stout, so I opted to go inside and take my food to go. I ordered a double steak burger combo meal and also an additional double steak burger. Yes, I was hungry, it was after 10pm and I hadn't eaten all day. The order was placed at a kiosk terminal which is how they do it here. You order and pay with zero interaction with an actual human. The interior of the establishment appeared clean, and it looked as if they had just mopped the floors. The restroom was utilized as I had a long drive ahead of me, and I wanted clean hands before I ate my meal and I also wanted to be pee free for the rest of my journey. The bathroom facilities were also clean and adequately stocked. When I came out, shortly after my meal was ready. I was excited to eat and was hoping for a delicious meal. I self served my drink, a Barqs root beer, and headed out to my car to continue my journey. I got situated in the car, placed the food bag on the seat, and drove off, waiting to enjoy my food as I drove so as not to lose precious time. After 30 seconds of driving, I was back on the highway heading south. I reached into the bag, ready to devour the hot French fries as I always eat them first. Much to my chagrin, the fries were ice cold. How could that be, I had only been in the car for less than a minute and surely they wouldn't have bagged up cold stale fries, would they? The short answer is, yes, they would. I always look forward to hot fresh French fries, as that is a treat with the meal. Tonight, Steak N Shake staff apparently felt serving hot fries wasn't important. I think that this should be at the top of every fast food Chains goals, serving hot fries to the customer. Nobody wants to eat cold soggy fries. On to the burgers! The double steak burger was hot, fresh and juicy. Every bite was delicious, on both burgers. While they may have failed on the French fries, they absolutely got the burgers right. While I try to stay away from fast food as much as possible, when traveling, sadly I have to eat and at times it is fast food. While tonight's visit wasn't a complete success, it wasn't a total failure by any means either. You lose 2 stars for the cold fries, the burgers were good and your establishment was clean. No fast food is 5 star in my opinion, so you start at a 4, and go down from there. Hot fries are paramount to your success with customers, that goes for any dining establishment. Nobody wants to eat cold fries, they're gross. That is why I eat them first, so they're not cold. Tonight, you failed in that regard, but hit redemption on the burgers. read more

Usually have great service here, but Thursday night, we went through the drive thru and had the worst experience. We ordered two milkshakes and were only given one at first and charged for one. The lady was very visibly mad at us even though she confirmed our order correctly in the beginning. She refunded the first transaction and charged us for our two. After we got the second shake, we realized it was not what we ordered. When we politely told the lady, she stared at us then slammed the window close, continued to stare at us and refused to give us our order. Grabbed some quick food from Steak 'n Shake while in Kalamazoo because our local one was our spot back before it closed. My husband and I went regularly when we were still dating and just like their food in general. I got a classic burger meal without pickles and a grilled cheese, while my hubby got a garlic burger and chicken tenders. I got a root beer while my husband got fruit punch. I will probably always frequent Steak 'n Shake anytime I don't have much time (we wanted to get home quickly so we didn't spend too much time in the rain) and there is one nearby. I've been coming here for years and was recently very disappointed. The restaurant was practically empty, yet they couldn't get my order right. They gave me two incorrect burgers and they did not give me my milkshake even though the machine messed up my order. They rushed me out of the restaurant when it was clear that they don't make the milkshake, after telling me that it was actively being prepared, so I waited for an extra 20 minutes for a shake that never came. I really like eating here and I keep coming back for their food. Great costumer service and friendly staff. They will do their absolute best to make sure you are leaving a happy costumer. The last time however we ordered 5 things of regular fries, but we end up disposing them. The fries were inedible, they were extremely salty. I have never had a bad experience here as a customer. I also do a lot of DoorDash orders for this establishment and I have noticed that they do a great job keeping up on all of their orders in a timely manner. One thing that stands out to me is the positive work environment and the vibe that you get from the employees. I think that the manager that works here treats his employees with absolute respect and I see it in their attitude. I once witnessed him apologizing to an employee for reprimanding them about something that they were unaware of. I'm not gonna lie - this particular Steak 'n Shake used to be a restaurant I avoided at all costs. The service used to be awful (though the food was still good). Tonight, my fiancé and I decided to give it another try after a solid year+ of avoiding it. We just did drive-thru (yanno, Covid) but we had SUCH a great experience! We had THE BEST hamburgers today!!!! Do you know those photos of "the hamburger" at wherever you are, and the photo is always so much better than the real thing? Usually, there's no resemblance in what the ad depicts and what you are served. Today, if anything, our hamburger was better than the photo!!! I love steak and shake. They food is cheap and yummy. This is my usual go to place. But, at this location the service has been nothing but mediocre. When you fine in you have to have 20 minutes for food and is faster than takeout or drive through. I have tried drive through couple of times and have waited longer than 20 minutes. I was here during weekend of thanksgiving and order milkshakes to go. We waited for over 30 minutes to find out that, they forgot to place the order. WHAT? Then waited for 15 more minutes to get it. I brought my two high school jazz bands to the Western Michigan University Jazz Festival last weekend and on the way back to the hotel after the festival, the students wanted to stop for a snack. I called ahead to make sure S n S could handle a large group of about 40 at one time. The owner/manager (sorry, I forget his name) said they would do their best and to come on in. We arrived at about 9:15 PM and at first I thought it would take forever, but the owner/manager and his staff cranked out shakes, burgers, and fries and had our entire group seated, fed, and happy in short order. The owner/manager was so friendly and grateful for our business and couldn't stop thanking us for coming in. He and his staff were so welcoming and did such a great job that I highly recommend this Steak n Shake, and hey, you just can't beat their shakes. Thank you owner/manager whose name I can't recall. So in summary of my past experience - Food took about 25 minutes to come out - Food was cold - Got my wife's order wrong twice - When walking up to pay I observed 5 employees playing on the claw machine and not serving customers - A young lady rang up our order and just walked away and didn't even complete the transaction - During the whole visit I observe employees on social media taking pictures - Several other customers voiced complaints as we were walking out By far the worst Steak n Shake experience I've ever received. If you're in Kalamazoo I do not recommend going to the West Main location. I would suggest trying the Portage location instead, you may have better luck If I could give this a negative star review I would. read more
