The food at this location was really great, especially the beef tallow fries. Also, the employees are some of the nicest people we've met in this area! Highly recommend read more

Food was good. Advertising "beef tallow" fries is appealing to the lowest common denominator in society. I do miss the Steak N Shake of old. The pepper sauce for the fries, the old menu, etc. shakes were still delicious. One downside for this location was the bathroom. Horrifying. Toilet seats were nasty. Just go buy a 50.00 replacement, it would make a world of difference. read more

I want to start with saying the food isn't bad. I love the fries, and overall the burgers are good. My issue is with that staff/service. Our orders have been wrong every time we've gone, and it wasn't just a minor issue, it was obviously wrong. I love the diner feel of the restaurant. Just make sure you check your order first! read more

Every time my fiancé and I go to barboursville we stop here, the food is always great (portioning and taste), the service is always outstanding, they hire the nicest waitresses! And the place is rather clean! Especially in the back where food is being made! I work at a restaurant so I know key details to look at I would 110% recommend this restaurant to travelers to get a good taste of wv! read more

We literally waited in line at 9:45 pm for 15 min behind a truck and trailer that appears was just sitting there. We finally drove around to the front passing the drive through where another truck and trailer was sitting. My husband tried to go in but the dining room was closed. We got back in line now behind the same truck and trailer plus another car. We called the store and let them know we had sat behind for over 15 min with no movement and within a few seconds the truck moved forward behind the other truck trailer where they both sat for another 12 min before the first truck & trailer moved forward. Finally after another few min the first truck moved forward and sat there. They finally came out and brought ONE bag to the first truck but returned back to the store and then handed the 2nd truck ONE bag! A total of 30 min for these TWO trucks and only ONE bag was given to them. The car in front of us went and got one thing and then finally it was our turn at the drive thru. There was a line up of about 5-6 milkshakes that we could see thru the window. Very very very frustrating and inefficient. There were at least 6 more cars behind up and several that left before reaching the front. read more

The food was okay not the best that I've had there years ago. Service wasn't amazing as you had to order prior to sitting which was new this time as well. The atmosphere was decent but didn't have that vibe to be there this time. Not really welcoming. Pretty bad that I didn't even snap a picture of the food we ordered. read more

I hate giving bad reviews but I can't give this place a good review. Went through the drive-thru. The only reason they get two stars is because the French fries were good. The service was slow and there were no other cars in line. The hamburger tasted like it had been sitting under a heat light for days. Super dry, cheese looked old, bun was stale. Would had taken back if we hadn't already been on the road. read more

10 out of 10, would recommend. The staff here is always so friendly and they make the food to perfection. I used to love going to steak n shakes all around the country growing up and their quality over the years has diminished, but not here! These guys/gals do everything they can to make it a great dining experience! If you're passing through or local, you will not regret stopping at this one! read more

The Steak 'n Shake franchise is notorious for terrible service and this location is no exception. The garlic parmesan fries were tasty, though. I went here for dinner with my boyfriend's family and three of them ordered chicken tenders. Well, they were running out of chicken tenders and our waitress came back to say that someone else should pick again. It happens, right? But in the back of my head I'm thinking "wait, I got fried chicken on my salad..." but figured that it was different or something. Our waitress comes back with all our plates and THEN says "pick something else off the kids menu, there weren't enough chicken tenders" I ACCIDENTALLY STOLE MY BOYFRIEND'S NEPHEW'S CHICKEN TENDERS. They didn't blame me (how was I supposed to know to tell her grilled chicken would be lovely) but I felt bad. Overall, I really don't recommend it. The price is ok, but..not worth it IMO. read more

Food was great. Service was HORRIBLE. She took our order, got our drinks & food. Forgot one of the things we ordered. Checked on us once about 5 minutes later. We didn't see her for the next 30 minutes. The table across from us was also looking for her. They even raised their hand well the one lady at the table got up & walked around were the pop was to find the waitress as well as another one just sitting on their phones. She gave them the bill & went back to her phone. The other waitress saw our stack of plates & brought our bill. We added shakes to go. After paying we noticed our shakes in the window. Our waitress was sitting down again on her phone with 2 other employees also on their phones. So we asked if we could have our shakes. She said oh yeah! (They didn't have lids) I had to ask for two lids for our kids. read more

We have some fond memories of eating here in college. But the fondness will have to stay in the past. Food: Really bad. Fries came as a mushy conglomeration. I am very easy to please when it comes to fries, but these were a disgrace. Bacon Double Cheeseburger was depressingly smushed and the thin patties were leathery & overcooked. Service: Really bad. Did not bother to confirm order, which made me a little leery, and sure enough she got the order wrong. I circled the building and came back to the window and when I told her that we were missing a large fry, she said "OK, that'll be $2.71". No apology. Not even a smile. Did not try to work with me. Just expected me to be OK with engaging in a 2nd transaction to cover her mistake. Bad. Price: Comparatively inexpensive, but I don't believe any dollar amount is worth it for this. Bad food + Bad service = Never again. read more

Poor service. Didn't get order right. Only one patty delivered on a double patty order. Forgot special order of fries. (Fixed by shaking seasoning in them ... you've gotta be kidding me as it was "extra "). Waiter disappeared after food was delivered and never came back near our table. Manager was too busy to flag down also. Yet, only 1/3 of restaurant was busy. You tell me: good place?!?! Wow. Won't be back anytime soon. Ps: only reason for one star - my son did like the cherry coke and milkshake. read more

Excellent burger and fries. I ordered the original double and fries for $3.99 and a milkshake. The milkshakes are 1/2 price from 2-5 weekdays. Service was good. I would have given this place 4 stars if the restaurant was clean. Overall the restaurant was filthy. The entire place smelled of old mop water. The floors were black with filth... Don't want to even explain the smell in the bathroom. Anyway, this restaurant would be a great place to grab a bite to eat if they would clean the place up a bit. It needs a thorough scrub down! read more

If I could give "zero" stars, I would! My mom and I went thru the drive-thru today, Thursday, April 5, at about 2:30 pm. There were 2 cars ahead of us. We sat for about 10 minutes, long enough for the guy in front of us to get tired of waiting and leave. So this makes us # 2 in line. After about another 10 minutes the car in front of us leaves. So we're at the window and the guy quotes me a price which is more than what he had told us when we ordered. He gave us the cost of the order for the guy who got tired of waiting. So he gets our amount right, I pay him, and it is probably another 15 minutes at the window waiting for 2 single burgers, 1 fry, and 2 drinks! We FINALLY get our food and pull into a parking space to eat. The so-called burger on my sandwich wasn't even lukewarm, it was COLD. Plus all I could really taste was the lettuce, tomato, onion, and mustard. The beef pattie was so thin, you could almost see through it! I had also asked for very little mustard on both of our sandwiches, and it was running off the bun there was so much mustard. I do not understand how getting something as simple as a hamburger, fries and a drink, can be screwed up. It's not rocket science. One person takes the order, via computer, and another supposedly fulfills the order. I cannot imagine these people being able to work anywhere where perhaps a person's life is dependent on doing something right. If you can't get a simple hamburger, fries and drink right and to the customer while it is still warm, please don't venture into a career where doing something right the first time, is really important! Had I not had my 89 year old mother with me, I would have taken our order back inside and demanded they give me a sandwich that was edible. There were maybe 5 cars in the parking lot, so it wasn't like they were slammed inside, in case they were to try to use this an excuse for the lack of service at the drive-thru. WON'T BE BACK!!! read more

As soon as you step into this place it's nostalgia but then you come to realize that everything is kind of bland including the food. I ordered the buttered burger (don't know the exact name) but it didn't have a lot of taste I had to use the seasoning that they had placed out to give it any bit of taste and I got the Cajun seasoned frys which I payed extra for and they also had no taste till I put the seasoning on it and the seasoning was practically crab seasoning that you get on crab chips so the food wasn't terrible and it was also very affordable so if you are trying to save money and have a decent meal than this isn't a bad place too go but if your wanting an amazing meal this place is not made for it also the waiters were sorta rude and seemed like they wanted nothing to do with us read more

My family came into this establishment and stood at the "Wait To Be Seated" sign for over 10 minutes and no one ever came to seat us. There were plenty of open tables, but there appeared to be only 2 waiters. We saw 3 more employees behind a wall cooking and/or just talking. A family that finished their dinner stood over 5 minutes at the cash register waiting on someone to come take their money. My family and I ended up walking out after both the waiters saw us at different times, but each time they just looked away to avoid eye contact. I don't necessarily blame the waiters, even though there were plenty of tables available, it's obvious they were understaffed and that's a management issue. We ended up eating next door at Fat Patty's and really enjoyed the food there. read more

This location has gone noticeably downhill of late. Poor service, inattentive waiters, uncaring management. The bathrooms were filthy. first we had trouble with the coupon to get a free milkshake and it advertised all over their app and their restaurant. then they sat us and we got our drink and food pretty fast but the chicken was hard a rock and almost broke my tooth. the fries were very very gross. and they served our milkshakes in paper cups when they use to serve them in fancy glass cups. and we waited over 30 minutes for our 1st refill. just wasn't the same as about 2 years ago. read more

This place is excellent. Wish they had some back west. Or maybe I don't since they break the calorie bank.

We came into steak and shake hoping for a quick bite. Our first core should of been the line, but figured it was just busy. After 15 minutes we were seated and promptly attended to by our waiter. He warned us the kitchen was running a bit slow so I admit it's on us for being folks and waiting. The water was great, a tall young fellow that was great at keeping up with our drinks and stopping by to again apologize for the delays. Around 45 minutes later we got our burgers. It was like licking a salt shaker, the mushrooms seemed to be the root of it but certainly not entirely too blame. One of my companions that had the sliders also complained of the sale flavor and he had no mushrooms. We also requested a milk shake for my fiance and I which again was brought out by the waiter promptly... Because it doesn't depends on the kitchen. Overall food was to salty, the wait time was god awful for standard burgers, milkshake was good but the waiter was great unfortunately I don't remember his name. I'd take Fuddruckers or Red Robin over this place any day of the week. Posting on 3/4, or visit was evening of 3/3 read more
