Even on a Monday night in early January, the restaurant was completely full by the end of the evening, which says a lot. There's a beautiful area near the kitchen with private tables enclosed by glass walls. If we return, we'll definitely request seating there. This was our second visit, and while the service was still very good, it felt a bit less over-the-top than our first time--possibly because a server was being trained. We were fortunate to have been able to make a reservation 15 minutes before we showed up and things got crazy New Year's Eve. We were seated within 5 minutes and wow! The restaurant is very nice and everyone workin was well dressed, professional and polite. We were seated toward the back in a quieter area with lower light but the lamp on the table brightens and dims. Our servers were Ian and Jayden (hopefully I've spelled their names correctly!) and they made our dining experience so special that we talked with the GM after to give them kudos. The food was delicious. I wasn't too hungry at the time so I got their beet salad and Brussels sprouts and samples some friends' appetizers. We ordered some desserts and wow, so fancy. OMG I think I'm still high from dinner. The entire meal felt like a dream. First and foremost, Jacob and the entire team were incredible. The attentiveness and hospitality made this place a 100/10!!! It was my first time here with my favorite family and friends and we ordered so much! The steaks were just unreal and cooked to perfection. We had the 18 oz bone in filet mignon and it was so tender! Tendernism! My favorite was the kc bone in steak. It had some fat and was very meaty. You'll have to try their peppercorn sauce, it was like a nice gravy. We came in for a birthday celebration with friends. The restaurant wasn't able to accommodate a table for 8 so we split our reservation into 2 tables of 4. The manager Justin was kind enough to allow our kids to sit at a table near us and combine the checks. It was a very elegant meal for us and the kids! Ha! Huge thanks for allowing us to have a beautiful dinner for our birthday celebration with kids. The staff were so wonderful and they make the best Tequila Sours and Gin Sours!!! They brought bread with butter to the table to start which was the most mouth watering bread I've ever had. I don't usually eat the bread baskets but I made an exception here. For starters we had the Hamachi Crudo, Burrata and fries. The blue cheese aoli was very good, I want to take some home! For mains we ordered the Australian Wagyu Filet Mignon with broccoli, creme brûlée creamed corn and spinach artichoke side. I highly recommend the creamed corn! That was so yummy with the steak! All around great experience here at Steak 48 to celebrate a nice evening. We order two steaks to share - the dry aged ribeye and the filet and had a couple sides to split as well. We also loved their bread service - yum! The food came out quickly and the steaks were cooked well however they did get a little extra cooked once it hit our hot plates. Overall great flavorful steaks! Our server was so friendly and guided us through the meal. Since we were so full at the end, he wanted to still send us home with a sweet treat! Shall I quibble that this restaurant, which claims to be located in Del Mar, is almost certainly not located within the City of Del Mar? It reminds me of the joke in Los Angeles that, wherever you are, you are only a block away from Beverly Hills. I don't care what city this restaurant is located in. This is an excellent, top notch restaurant in almost every way. The food and drinks were extremely good. The service was about as perfect as service can be. The decor is striking. I will only say that, looking around the place, some dining areas of the restaurant are nicer and, frankly, better than others. If and when I return, I will do my homework and try and get to the better areas. They have a full bar, of course, and a wine list than is incredibly long. They also have many "signature" cocktails and some mocktails, too. I tried the "Walnut" Old Fashioned and it was subtle and very nice. I also had a glass of wine that was probably the largest wine pour, in the largest wine glass, I have ever had. And I am not complaining. We started with the "hanging bacon" appetizer. If you like bacon--and who doesn't--you will be very happy with this dish. You get four very well-seasoned and delicious thick pieces of bacon hanging from a weird medieval-looking contraption. The crab cakes entree was extraordinary. There is almost no filler in these crab cakes. The petite filet with blue cheese "caked" on top was perfectly cooked and very good. For the sides, the Hasselback potatoes looked boring but they were very well-seasoned and delightfully crispy. The creamed spinach and artichoke is exactly what you think it is. It is decadent but nothing out of the ordinary. Because we were celebrating an anniversary, the restaurant comped us a dessert--the vanilla caramel cake--that was both huge and delicious. It was served with a literal mountain of whipped cream on the side. One small final note: valet parking is $11, which, I suppose, is not too bad. The restaurant is located in the corner of a large shopping mall. You can park for free just about anywhere in the parking lot and in about 2 minutes you can walk to the front entrance. Just saying. We were here last month for my daughter's graduation. We were seated in a booth by the bar and I'm glad we were. The bartenders and waiters kept coming over to dote on the graduate and it was very sweet to see. She even got a complimentary key lime pie and four weeks later we are still talking about it. Something to note is that the hot plates sizzle with certain sides, and for the corn it splattered a bit. Amazing steak in a posh area. Went for a group work dinner. I was not able to get a feel of the main dining area, but the private room was neatly decorated with a Del Mar racetrack painting and some shear curtains. The room was also very noise proofed. Had meatballs and calamari for an appetizer, both were very good but did not stand out. The Caesar salad was also pretty good. What stood out was the bone-in ribeye. Was perfectly cooked (medium rare) and was delicious. Hard to describe, but was the best steak I've had in a while. Had a phenomenal time here for a birthday dinner from start to finish! It's a nice steak house in Del Mar so you have to know it's going to be expensive going in. The sides felt a bit expensive, but again I knew this going in so it wasn't a surprise and didn't impact my visit much. With all that being said, my family and I had a wonderful time here! Started with some complimentary house rolls, tasted like a better version of those pillsbury crescents. One had some glaze/butter on top, we couldn't figure out what it was, but most likely think it's butter. Got a martini which was basically a double and made excellently. We went straight to entrees after that, each member of my family got a steak, we got filet & new yorks. The plating was a little sad if you don't order sides. It's just a steak on a hot plate, with some juices still on the plate so it's not super neat and it looks really plain. It's expected that you get sides but having the super huge plate and only having a small steak on it really makes you question the prices. We did get sides so this wasn't that big of a deal but again was kind of weird. The sides were absolutely incredible tho. We got brussel sprouts, au gratin potatoes, whipped potatoes, and french fries. All excellent, and all complimented the steak very nicely. One weird thing is that they say their meat rareness/doneness is one level up from regular (other restaurant medium-well steak 48 medium), but I'm not sure why they do this, if you have to tell everyone we do it one level up so bump your usual order one up then whats the point of having a non-standard scale if everyone is gonna ask you for the standard scale? Made it unnecessarily complicated and I didn't see the need for this? Then a very nice cherry on top was getting some complimentary cookies because it was my birthday. Finally what really impressed me was that they gave me a call the day after to see how my experience was. My wife and I came here to celebrate our 2 year wedding anniversary, and overall it was a great experience, exactly what we were hoping for. The only downside was an awkward interaction with the busser. He approached my wife while she was mid bite and asked if she was finished, even though there was still food on her plate. He then lingered nearby, which made her feel uncomfortable and a bit rushed. I did appreciate receiving a followup call checking in on our experience. However, after mentioning this incident, I ended up playing phone tag with the manager, Sean, and never received a proper followup or resolution. After several excellent visits we returned with friends from Orange County who wanted to try it. Service was excellent but a miss on a steak ordered medium. Came ultra rare to raw. Sent back and then came back well done in pieces. As unappetizing as it was, my wife didn't want to send it back again because everyone else was midway through their meals. I noted in my OpenTable review that a restaurant specializing in steak should do better. It really spoiled the meal for all of us. The manager reached out with his name and number, but after trying to reach him 3 times and leaving messages - he never called back. He was always in meetings but the receptionist promised he would get the message. What had been such a great place for us on so many occasions will no longer be our go to destination of choice. When friends from out of town invited me to Steak 48, I balked a bit at their choice because I am not a meat eater. Having just come from there, I must say, I'm glad I accepted the invitation! We ordered salads and appetizer sampling the wedge & beet salads, crispy shrimp, chix fried lobster, lobster escargot, roasted potatoes and freshly baked bread. Each dish more delicious than the next! Service with a smile from every direction. Lighting is a bit dark for older clients like us so it was good that I had savored the menu offerings online before going. We were too full for dessert but freshly baked chocolate chip cookies for each of us was the parting gift from our server (who has been with the company since the beginning at the Del Mar location). Steak 48 was so much more than Steak! Too bad it wasn't here 40 years ago when I stopped consuming red meat...I am sure it's tops in that regard, too! read more

We made reservations on a week night. They are located in the Del Mar Highlands Shopping Center so there's lots of parking but most of the spots right in front are reserved for valet. There are a few self park spots which I was able to snag. But if you don't get one of those, the entire mall parking is available. The ambiance is rather dimly lit. The rolls were super buttery and flaky, so great. We got the Rhode Island Calamari and Shrimp. I only go to try the calamari, they were soft and tender because they were minimally fried yet they had a crispy thin batter. Probably the best version of calamari I've had. The Caesar salad was great the croutons were the star. Soft yet crispy, the outside was slightly crispy and the inside was still tender. Not hard and crunchy all the way through, like I've usually had before. For my entree I chose the 12oz NY strip, medium. I'm always concerned when ordering steak at places because I never know what their meat temp is. By USDA standards medium rare is 130-135 degrees which is a pink center but most steak places go by feel which is a red center which I consider rare. I was glad that the server clarified medium rare as "pink with a warm red center" which is why i ordered it medium. The steak came how I wanted it and on a 500 degree plate. We got the sautéed broccoli and whipped potatoes as sides they were both amazing. The broccoli was tender but not mushy and flavored well with salt and Parmesan cheese. The whipped potatoes were very smooth and the Boursin cheese gave it a nice flavor. I forget which bottle of Cabernet we ordered but it was smooth and went well with the steak. We came here for dinner for my birthday and it will definitely be added to my rotation of places to go for special occasions. Parking was pretty full when we arrived for a 7 PM reservation but they have valet available for $11 (I believe is what I saw) When you first enter there is an interesting wall of cleavers as entry decor. The dining area was full of mood lighting with a bar in the center. Our server was very attentive and made sure he understood my food sensitivities correctly. I appreciated it. The menu is a mixture of seafood and steak and it was really difficult for me to choose a direction because I wanted everything on the menu. In the end I got the chefs cut hanging bacon and crispy shrimp for appetizers; roasted beef salad with a petite mignon and the Cream corn brulé with in New York strip. The hanging bacon literally came hanging. It was four thick pieces of pork belly seasoned very well and I will say it can definitely feed at least a few people because it was a bit salty. Although I was only able to eat half, I enjoyed it. The crispy shrimp was delicious. That Thai chili sauce they put on it is perfection. Standard for every table is their version of dinner rolls that looks a bit like croissant bread. It was very buttery in the best way possible. It was very hard to not eat everything. The beet salad was delicious. The corn crème brûlée was delicious as well. And both steaks were cooked to perfection. If you like a leaner meat flavor-go with the filet mignon. If you like a slightly fatty steak flavor, the New York strip is the way to go. We had a lot of leftovers because this was a lot of food for two people and they packed it up beautifully. My colleagues and I had our team holiday dinner party here, and what was intended to be a grand celebration fell short in more ways than one. The evening started with a table intended for 6 people when the reservation was for a party of 7. The 3 men in our party sat comfortably in their seats while us 4 ladies were joined at the hips on the booth bench. We had no elbow room. When we inquired whether we could move to a different table, our server told us the place was booked solid. We ordered a seafood tower that consisted of jumbo prawns and raw oysters. This was very good. The oysters were fresh and the prawns were huge. We also ordered an heirloom tomato salad with burrata added to share. $32 for 5 pieces of tomatoes and 1 piece of burrata was a bit pricey, even for an upscale restaurant, but at least it was tasty and fresh. We ordered the following side dishes to share (all were tasty): Sauteed Broccoli Hasselback Potatoes Boursin Whipped Potatoes Shishito Peppers Corn Brûlée Entrees: Dry Aged Ribeye 22oz x 2 Bone-In Ribeye 22oz Bone-In Filet 18oz Filet Mignon 8oz x 2 New Bedford Sea Scallops I had one of the Dry Aged Ribeye 22oz with Oscar crab cake and black truffle peppercorn added. I should've just ordered the steak by itself. The add-ons were a mistake that I regret making. In terms of presentation, the Oscar crab cake looked like someone else's leftovers dumped onto my plate. It was definitely not in the shape of a crab cake. I don't know if Oscar means crumbled up crab cake, but that's what it looked like. It tasted just as bad as it looked. It was dry and overcooked. I picked at it, as I wasn't quite sure whether it was dropped on the counter or was on someone else's plate. It did not look remotely appealing. The black truffle peppercorn sauce was too salty to eat. I dipped one piece of meat into it, and all I tasted was salt. There was no peppercorn or truffle flavor to it. The steak itself was $105. The Oscar crab cake was $26 and the black truffle peppercorn sauce was $4. My plate didn't look like a $135 plate from an upscale steakhouse. Oh by the way, I just realized we were charged $138 according to the receipt. One of my colleagues ordered an 8oz filet mignon with black truffle lobster added. She was expecting a lobster tail but instead got a small dish with pieces of lobster that weren't presentable at all. The server wasn't happy when we asked her to add the lobster to the dish so we could at least take a decent photo of it. The 8oz filet mignon was $68. The pieces of lobster add on was $58. This did not look like a $126 dish from an upscale steak house. Food presentation was a failure. The flavor of the steaks was average. I had ordered a medium rare but it was rare all around. I took it to go and re-seasoned/recooked it. Service was not that great. We were all dressed up and were hoping one of the servers could take our photos but they were all too busy. We expected better service and better quality. We were disappointed with our experience. They kinda redeemed themselves with dessert because we enjoyed the triple layer key lime pie and the complimentary mini chocolate chip cookies. The pie was delicious but it wasn't very pretty. Clearly, this restaurant lacks a food stylist. We also appreciated the complimentary bread service. The buttery rolls in the cast iron skillet were delicious. The evening wasn't a total disaster since we did enjoy some of the food and wine. However, it fell short of our expectations, so we will likely not have a repeat visit. Ever since this spot opened I have heard incredible things about it and my husband and I decided to do a little date night dinner together since it had been awhile. It was a Friday night and wow it was a very busy spot and when you first walk in it does seem like a loud spot. Thankfully when they walked us to our table we got sat in a private booth that was much quieter and you could actually see into the kitchen which we love. We decided to splurge a little so we did go with one of the waygu steak options to share as well as the mac n cheese and hasselback potatoes as the sides. We also go the cesar salad to share which they split onto 2 plates for us and it comes with a poached egg on top which was interesting but I enjoyed. We did start with the crispy shrimp which I am not the biggest shrimp person but these were so good!! How could I forget about the dirty martini. It was the largest martini I've ever had and they give you the shaker on the side so it is well worth the money. We had such a lovely experience tonight with steak48 thanks to our server Arman. He thoughtfully helped us plan our meal and gave us guidance and even though we had small children with us he was patient and spoke with them and included them as valued guests. Came here for a birthday, I had high expectations for this restaurant after seeing the reviews on Google and Yelp, but it was a very mediocre visit. We were not greeted upon check in, the hostess gave us a weird look like we weren't dressed right for this fancy place, even though we were. We were finally seated after some time, the ambiance was nice, but it was very dark inside, as was the hall going to the bathroom, it was a very dark hall that was hard to tell if there are more bathrooms available or a utility room at the end. Our server was okay, it was hard to hear him because he spoke in low tone. When we tried to ask him anything, he would leave as we were mid sentence or ignored us. Not what I was expecting from a place like this where I planned to spend a lot. We got some honey butter bread for the table which was really popular and delicious, and reminded my of Pillsbury rolls. We then ordered a Cobb salad and an a la carte seafood tower of king crab legs, oysters and giant shrimp that tasted very fresh. For our main course we ordered the scallops and the large ribeye steak, I requested medium well but it was still raw and undercooked in some areas and then very burnt everywhere else. It was also mostly fat unfortunately and bland, so I only got a small portion for the $80 price. My dogs enjoyed the rest of the fatty steak. Besides the bread, the only other thing we enjoyed here was their key lime pie dessert that was a very shareable size and had a nice tangy taste. Our waiter started off strong -- he was knowledgeable about celiac disease, made sure to communicate my daughter's needs to the kitchen, and made us feel confident we were in good hands. That's exactly why what happened next was so frustrating. When boxing up our leftovers, he combined my daughter's steak with my son's in the same container. My son's steak had been in contact with gluten, which means my daughter's food is now cross-contaminated and completely unsafe for her to eat. For someone with celiac disease, this isn't a minor mistake -- it's a real health concern. I called the restaurant to speak with a manager. The person who answered promised a callback the following day. I never heard from anyone. For a restaurant at this price point, we expect both careful execution and basic accountability when something goes wrong. We got neither. read more

Let me just say, I've been dying to try this restaurant out and I'm glad I was able to do so! Dark & moody, this place definitely has the vibes of classic steak restaurant. What I had - Bread Rolls - I usually don't mention the bread but this was so good! Warm & buttery, this was delicious! Chefs Cut Hanging Bacon - 4 slabs of generously cut sweet bacon can easily be shared. Torched Scallops & Caviar - Scallops were so tender! Shisito Peppers - You get quite a bit for this! Maine Lobster Escargot - There's no escargot in this dish, it's lobster that plates in an escargot platter. Perfect bite sized app. - Crème Brûlée Corn (not pictured, they served it before I can snap a pic) - Sweet & creamy, highly recommend! Brussel Sprouts - So flavorful with candied bacon mixed within. Japanese Wagyu Filet (special, off menu) - One of the best steaks I've had! Nice sear and melt in your mouth tenderness on the inside. Loved all the desserts- Peanut Butter Pie - Art in an of itself with a powerful peanut butter flavor. Red Velvet Bread Pudding - Rich & delicious, topped with vanilla ice cream. ‍Key Lime Pie - Tart & sweet, perfect spring dessert. Cookies & Cream Gelato Cake - Loved the ice cream cake because this can be shared! Donuts - The beignets on the tree were so good! This was also off menu Service was on point! They even served us the side dishes. One of my friends spilled her drink and they readily laid white napkins to cover it up so that we don't accidentally soil our sleeves. We came here for my Wife's birthday and it just wasn't what I was expecting. First the bathrooms, were interesting, basically everyone door was a private stall. Which is nice, but I had to get in line and wait, behind like 8 other people I think people take allot more time reading their phone when they are in their own private bathroom. I also noticed they were out of toilet gaskets etc, and the floor was wet. The dining area was very dark, some light beams were shining through the curtains and I could see what appeared to be allot of dust in the air which was surprising. They sat us at a table and I was CONSTANTLY getting bumped by the waiters and servers walking by. Like Every time they would pass, I would get run into, and I wasn't exactly sticking out, although the person on the other side of me may have been. I ended up sitting next to my wife instead of across from her. The waiter was ok, he answered our questions fine etc, but the service was slow, the people next to us were seated much later than us, and finished before us. And I mean a significant time difference not just 10-15 minutes. I ran out of my drink / available water several times, and left thirsty. The food was over-priced. It was good, but I'm talking about $12 a shrimp, for a cold shrimp! So, 4 shrimp cocktail was $48 alone. Not $40 for 4 shrimp, $48...+ tax and tip oof. My wife's steak was overcooked, but I took a bite and it still tasted fine to me. My scallops were amazing. Still over priced for the tiny portion, but there was no sand to be found in them, and they were cooked perfectly. Maybe the best I have ever had. The bread rolls and wedge salad were pretty good too. The Key lime pie desert had finger-lime caviar on top which was a nice touch! Over all the experience was not completely bad, but I don't think I will go back. I'd rather go to other steak houses for the money. I just can't see the value vs other options. read more

Amazing!!! We went in Saturday night busy place but well staffed to care for the guests. They have complimentary honey butter rolls. We started with the torched scallops and caviar a dainty and delightful appetizer. I had the king crab legs and he ordered the filet. An experience I will remember for a very long time. Last night, my husband took me to dinner at Steak 48, and I must say that it was one of those experiences that goes far beyond an excellent meal. We have been fortunate enough to visit exceptional restaurants in several countries, including throughout Europe, as well as renowned five-star restaurants in Mexico. However, the service we received last night deserves special recognition. Our server, Brian O'Malley, executed every stage of service with a level of excellence that is difficult to find today. His attention was impeccable, professional, warm, and perfectly coordinated. He was always present at exactly the right moment without ever being intrusive, carefully attending to every detail and making us feel genuinely well cared for. The quality of the food was extraordinary, but Brian's hospitality elevated the entire experience to another level. At a time when people often speak only about the establishments themselves, I believe it is equally important to recognize the individuals who make it possible for an evening to become an unforgettable memory. Thank you, Brian, for demonstrating that true service is not simply about bringing a dish to the table, but about making the people seated at that table feel truly special. For this price range and perceived quality the experience was meh. Went for a private event, since we were early stopped at the bar for a cocktail. The service and quality of drinks at the bar were what I expected. Unfortunately it went downhill once we were shown into the private dining room. In summary, drinks were left without being refilled unless we asked; they had a time limit for the dining room, but were exceptionally slow in getting things out; the steaks were not prepared according to our requests, nothing special about the sides or desserts and it was a cramped space. Drinks: some ordered sodas, which were not refilled unless it was brought to their attention. Steaks: I ordered a 12 ounce bone-in filet, cooked medium. It started out, medium, proceeded to medium rare and towards the end it was so rare I could not eat it. Hubby ordered a bone-in ribeye, cooked, medium rare. It was more medium and much thinner cut than what I'd expect at a steakhouse. Other misses included asking for butter on the side twice, which was never brought out. I hate sounding like a complainer, but at this price point there are expectations and this is not our first rodeo as they say. read more

I am a HUGE Mastro family fan and enjoy their restaurants very much. Was not impressed at Steak 48 with the exception of the service. I frequently order the KC bone in strip..................and wasn't impressed. I felt i could buy better at a grocery store. Having said this, Dominic's in Scottsdale (a Mastro's masterpiece) has the BEST KC bone in strip in America. either i got a bad cut at Steak 48, or they buy from different vendors. read more

We came to Steak 48 on 5/29 expecting a special night out, but ended with my wife getting violent food poisoning. The night started out with them not seating us at a high top table like we literally registered in our reservation because "we didnt put that down during the reservation". I would respect them if they were at least honest about it, and that they just overbooked but they started it out on a bad note. Now onto the mains for the meal. My wife ordered the chef's special ($185) and I had the bone-in ribeye. Within hours she was sick, and the reason we're confident it came from here is simple: we ate completely different meals and shared nothing of consequence, yet I was perfectly fine. The one thing that was hers alone was that chef's special. When that's the only variable, it isn't hard to connect the dots. We confirmed we ate the same things up to that day in the days leading up so it seems unlikely that it was something else. What took this from a bad night to a one-star review was how the restaurant handled it. We raised our concern the day after with a phone call and were told they'd look into it. Their "investigation" came back with nothing -- no acknowledgment, no accountability, and most tellingly, no attempt to make it right. Kris sounded like one of those corporate jackoffs who rehearses these kinds of things when it happens. No follow-up to see how she was doing, and an excuse that "chefs were gathering data", 5 days later, is evidence. We had to call and email them for a follow up, and there was no apology that felt sincere, no comp. Nothing. For a place charging $185 for a plate, taking a customer's illness seriously is the bare minimum, and they couldn't manage even that. The food being expensive is one thing; sending someone home sick and then shrugging it off is another. And offering your "personal email" as concession for doing nothing about this is about the move we expect of this place . We aren't doing this for a refund, it just helps to know a restaurant can show care and compassion instead of spewing off generic responses and so called data - but this one obviously can't. We won't be back, and I'd think twice before ordering the chef's special. read more
