Well, in my mind, we had to stop for such a thing. It took a minute to get back to the spot, and another to wander around the lock on the river there to figure out where it was. It turns out it's a large boat anchored above the lock, tied off to the moorings. We walked on board, and ducked our heads and went below. Here there was a surprisingly small but well stocked bar. All around the bar were about a dozen fellas jawing it up and laughing, in what I would guess to be a Gaelic speak(I understood none of the banter). We used the facilities(yes they had a good bathroom), and saw down on some large leather couches like we were in a den in someones house. We ended up with a couple glasses of wine and relaxed. There was a dog wandering around by us, relaxed to the odd juxtaposition of a bar under water. To the side of the couches was actually a lizard fish tank, just to add some quirky ambiance I suppose. we only stayed for a couple drinks, we had to be on our way. But not before thanking the gal working that day,for a great spot to stop and relax for a moment on the road.

It's such a great atmosphere with a cozy area to eat in front of a wood-burning cast iron stove. It's a very pet friendly place as well. We saw a cute doggie enjoying the warmth inside the bar. We ordered the chicken casserole special. It was good despite the price being a little too high for what it was. I'd expect to have a puff pastry on top of it for that price. Although, it was very tasty even though the presentation was not all that great. It was served with mash potatoes instead of chips. It was good. They have a big variety of local taps. I went with the Jock Pumpkinhead Stout from Loch Lomond Brewery while my husband had the Man O'Hoy from Orkney Brewery. We were very happy with our local brew selections. It was a very nice atmosphere for lunch. If you're a Harry Potter fan, then you may want to take that hike from here to the filming location of Hagrid's Hut. The pathway up to the hut is just a short walk from the inn. The inn itself is kind of unique with the ice ax and ski décor. It reminded me a little of Ketchikan for some reason. Maybe it was the 5 Points of Contact photo that I saw by Peter Daynes. There's also a display of ice axes designed by Hamish MacInnes. Our tour guide in Ketchikan was coincidentally named Hamish. Wow, everything does come around full circle. It all turned out to be a nice lunch experience in the Highlands.

We enjoyed the price fixe lunch menu, which is honestly a great deal for two courses! I personally ordered the crispy Brie followed by the sea bass over risotto, and both plates were stellar. My tablemates echoed those sentiments across the board, and we had a great variety of dishes to sample. The carrot and coriander soup was another popular pick at our table. And despite being quite full from the delicious Brie with its bright chutney and balsamic, followed by the light sea bass over beautifully rich squash risotto, we somehow managed to save room for dessert. We shared a sticky toffee pudding featuring a light sponge and rich, decadent sauce. I'm not sure when I'll be back in Inverness, but I do know The Mustard Seed will be on my itinerary. Expect a crowd, but know that it's worth it!

Turned out "The Specials Board" had not been updated, even tho we were first available reservation at noon opening. 'Daily Specials' were easily 2.5 times the cost of the 2 course meal options. After our order was placed - AND the 'starter' was brought to table, the server came back to table to say the kitchen 'just informed him that the 'Special' Cod over Butternut Squash from the specials board was apparently not available..... They would replace the North Sea Cod with halibut as the special. Unfortunately the kitchen neglected to tell the waiter that actually the squash too wasn't available and the substituted 'special' was altogether a different combination of veg, fish, and a super rich sauce. Waiter admitted he was disappointed that kitchen didn't tell him the entire special wasn't as listed. A proper resolve could have included some bit of a minor offer of compensation, (discount or perhaps the £7 small glass of wine). Yet not even an apology - just an original comment by the server that he was surprised the kitchen didn't tell him they completely modified the "Special" - Dinner experience across the river Ness was every bit of what one hopes for when on holiday!

Six items were on the menu: a soup of the day (rice and chicken) with bread, a ham and cheese sandwich, a chicken/bacon/sweetcorn sandwich (check the TripAdviser reviews if you want to hear more about that one), a vegan cheese and pickle sandwich, a pulled pork wrap, and a falafel/mango chutney wrap. Five pages of the six-page menu were drinks, coffee, and alcohol. This is not a food place. It looks like one. Based on old reviews and photos, maybe it used to be one. I did come in the afternoon, so maybe it's better for breakfast. Or maybe not. For the amount and quality of sandwich I got for 5 quid, I should have just gotten a meal deal at the co-op. Genuinely, a meal deal sandwich would have been better quality. My ham and cheese did have both ingredients, but the cheese was shredded and the ham was very thin-sliced and overwhelmed by the cheese. My guess is that it's made to be toasted, hence the shredded cheese, and that was an option for 20 pence-- but why on God's green Earth would you serve a cold sandwich with shredded cheese? The bread was bland and basic-- fine if you're making yourself something at home, but not something worth paying for at all. (Again, it was like a meal deal sandwich. But worse. I would never disrespect a meal deal sandwich like this.) Based on the service (or lack thereof) we received from the very beginning, I should have listened to my intuition and gotten up to find somewhere better. The wait staff are called that, I assume, because they will wait ten minutes for you to ask them if they can take your order, only to be repeatedly rude to you when you politely ask for the bare minimum amount of service. Full disclosure: I have worked in food service before. I sympathize with anyone who has to deal with customers. But when we weren't served, and went up to ask if our order could be taken, we were snapped at and told to go back to our table. No "apologies, someone will be there shortly". Not even a "sorry for the wait, we're very busy right now". Just "go back to your table". So we did. Which was a huge mistake. I've lived in Scotland for more than a year and I don't know if I've ever had a meal that depressing since living here. And I've made Pasta in Sauce at 3am with just water because I ran out of milk. I won't be too hard on our table's waiter because he was very young and inexperienced, and I expect he's received minimal, if any, training on how to wait tables. I honestly felt bad for him. He looked as though he would rather be anywhere else. In that way I felt a real connection to the wait staff; in fact, it was the only time I actually felt truly seen by them. I, too, would rather have been anywhere else. But that's not necessarily the vibe you want to be getting when you walk into a place. This place would be better off selling ready-made, takeaway sandwiches rather than masquerading as a restaurant and disappointing us at every turn. Seriously. Not to quote other media in a literal Yelp review, but my expectations were low and I was still let down. The only saving grace of this place was that it was clean and had wifi that was strong enough for me to send this picture of my sandwich to my friends and go "????????". Also there were two very cute dogs outside, although I don't believe they were hired by the restaurant. If you're desperate for food and don't really mind what you're spending money on, then this place is fine. Like I said, at least it's clean and has decent wifi. But I would not waste my time here twice.

Their hours have changed, and do not open for breakfast until between 9-9:30, which can be too late for anyone trying to catch a bus or a tour from the square. We had lunch at The Granary, which was just OK. What we really enjoyed was having a mid-afternoon snack (afternoon tea), as they serve excellent coffee and tea drinks. The cappuccino and chai tea lattes were very good. They have a special drink on the menu that was absolutely decadent- the Hot Chocolate Royale! A case of pies, cakes, and treats is made fresh daily to tempt you, and everything is really good. The only tricky thing is the QR codes are used to place your own order, but if your phone gets poor service, you will have to order at the counter and tell them your table number. No-one told us this, and we had waited for quite a while until we figured it out, as the table service is minimal.

We love good pizza, and even on a trip where we're focusing on local cuisine, if good pizza is available, we're willing to forego a meal of local culture to put it in our mouths. Black Isle Bar is located on Church Street, in the main couple of blocks stretch of bars and restaurants in the heart of Inverness. After a day out exploring Speyside whiskies, it was exactly what we needed for dinner. You order at the counter and find a table where they will deliver your food. The pizza menu has a handful of good vegetarian options, and there are plenty of beers on tap. My wife and I shared the Broccoli and Stilton pizza...It had a good, light, and chewy crust and overall good flavor, though I didn't taste much of the honey listed as one of the ingredients. We also shared a salad, which was quite fresh. They've got a nice rooftop garden-like seating area too (though it was too cold for us Californians to enjoy that space) Great pizza in a lively atmosphere with very friendly service. We'd definitely get it again if we were in Inverness.

Not so at Isles Inn...a more casual environment with a separate bar/pub area and dining room. Reservations not taken, but there might be a wait to be seated. We went twice, actually on the same night...once for dinner (about a 20-minute wait for a table), and a second time back later for dessert, where we offered to eat our cranachan standing in the bar, but by the time it was ready, they offered us an available table back in the dining room. They're nice people here, and the food is good enough. They've got a vegan dish of the day. (I'm a vegetarian) On this night it was a smoky bean casserole...I opted for the vegetarian burger, which came with tomato relish, Monterey Jack cheese, chips (a.k.a. fries) and a salad. It was basic but filled me up. The vegan patty on the burger was a good "meaty" style patty a-la Beyond or Impossible. (As opposed to a black bean or grain-based vegetable patty.) The cheese kind of disappeared into the burger when cooked. The fries were really good! This place was packed both times we were there...the second time, musicians were setting up in the pub area. (Though we were finished before they started.) They used to have a fried halloumi cheese on the menu which would have been akin to a sort of vegetarian version of fish and chips. Emailed them in advance and they said the chef would have been willing to make it for me if I'd wanted it. (Again I'm a vegetarian but the fish and chips I saw at another table looked really good.) This may have been the only spot in town we could get into without a reservation. It was a good experience.
