The State Room is basically an American restaurant with an Asian flare. We were told outdoor seating was first-come-first served, so we arrived a little early before our reservation time to grab a spot. They do have a small covered patio area in front of the restaurant. But being that it was a weekend, the whole street was closed to traffic, allowing extended outdoor dining. Even still, the place was pretty packed. But since we had a fur baby with us, the host kindly butted up a couple tables outside to accommodate us. For apps we started with raw oysters, bang bang calamari, and handmade dumplings. The oysters & calamari were pretty fresh & delicious. The handmade dumplings were ok. They were covered in some type of sauce, so for a minute, they actually looked like tortellinis. After taking a bite, they tasted a little more like wontons with the sauce poured over it. I had a hard time deciding on what to order for my main course, since I'm typically not a huge burger fan, but am skeptical about ordering Asian cuisine from an American restaurant. I decided to take a chance and order their chow fun, which was one of the specials of the day that got left off the menu... I knew I should have ordered a burger or pizza instead. The beef was cooked nice and tender, and the noodles were fine. But the sauce? No bueno. Way too salty like it was either from a jarred sauce or they OD'd on soy sauce. On the upside, drinks were on point. They have a nice selection of draft beers & cocktails, as well as adult mocktails and more. Bottom line, would I go there again? Yes, for the American food and drinks. But if the mood strikes me for Asian food, I'll visit an Asian restaurant instead. read more

We came in to eat after being at the theater next door on fourth Street in San Rafael. The restaurant had several tables and it was nice and quiet. I wasn't able to take any pictures because they were going to close fairly quickly so we sat and ate our food in the 15 minutes that we had. My mother and I split a tuna melt and it was very good. Went on a Sunday evening, not super busy but decently full. Got a table for 3 inside pretty easily. Only a couple tables were occupied outside. Greeters and servers were nice and attentive. Ambiance was chill, not too noisy for the size of the restaurant but it was a little dark. I couldn't see the menu that well but it could be just my eyes or where I was sitting. All of our food looked good, decent portion sizes. My garlic fries were the best part. Super tasty shoestring style fries with a good amount of garlic but not overwhelming. I could have eaten a whole plate of those. My cubano sandwich was ok only because I prefer a more traditional cubano but this one was good if you wanted a pork sandwich. I also had a side salad that was fresh, crunchy, and dressed perfectly. I did not partake in the alcohol but my dinner companions were very pleased with their beers. The bar area is super aesthetically pleasing. I'd come back to try more of the menu. Also, the women's restroom I think is book themed. An audiobook was playing when I went in there. BREWERY RESTAURANT- one of my lunch spots in downtown San Rafael! It's a hip gastropub for house brews, cocktails, pizzas and American eats! I am so glad they stayed open during the pandemic and it's great to see them thriving again! We came here and ordered the spread but my favorite foods were the -Bang Bang Calamari with aioli, Sticky Ribs, Cubano sammie with fries and the chicken! Super annoyed because the "East/West" salad was a joke. Literally all lettuce except for like two slices of cucumber. Easy excellent choice for dinner before a movie at the Smith Rafael Theater next door - whether it's a pizza, salad, or appetizer, the menu is solid throughout. Favorites include the handmade dumplings with pork and spinach and the blistered green beans, but the Thai and chopped salads are excellent as well if you want a change from a pub burger or pizza with the good variety of beers on tap and/or wine by the glass. On the last night of our vacation, we were looking for a late night meal and hoping to end on a high note. An outdoor patio is located in the front and there is plenty of seating available inside. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the friendly hostess and given a choice of where we'd like to sit, which we appreciated. We chose the room with the ski ball machine and had it all to ourselves. I was sure that the server would forget us back there. However, it was quite the opposite. We started with 4 beer flights for $12. The Guava IPA, Barn Stormer, Altered State, and the Porter were all pretty good. We ordered the hot wings, a side salad and the Enterprise pizza. The hot wings were yummy, more sweet than spicy, they were super crispy and worth ordering. I felt that the side salad for $8, was a bit overpriced. The salad was good and topped with a soft white mellow tasting cheese that was delicious. Other than that, it was pretty basic, and I did have to pull out some extremely wilted pieces. The Enterprise pizza, has pepperoni, homemade fennel sausage and onions. I found the sausage to be lacking in flavor and thought the pizza in general was just ok and could have used more sauce. My husband on the other hand really enjoyed it and was happy that the pizza with the pepperoni and sausage added was not salty. Service was outstanding, which made the experience memorable. If chance would bring me back to San Rafeal, I'd swing by State Room to try other items on the menu. read more

Staycation - check. Restaurant stalking - check. This is what took us to State Room. We made a res for Labor Day weekend Sunday. Since we wanted to ensure it didn't fill up, we got a reserved table but it didn't seem like you needed a reservation. There is a mixed group here. A larger group of some older, very trendy folks and also some couples in their 20s. Menu: I was excited about certain items and pretty much had already decided what to order before we had arrived. East west salad - loved the battered onions and peanuts, very nice and light dressing, a good crunch Aspall cider - super fizzy and refreshing and a bit fruity Fries - of course a burger was ordered with the fries, but I just partook in eating the fries which were definitely hand cut and yummy Churro sundae - dessert! for sure - the churro was very gluttonous with fruit with a topping and ice cream. Pure gluttony in the fried dough form Anyway that summed it up. We did see a number of people ordering the pizza. The crust looked okay, but I decided to save my pizza craving for a true Italian restaurant. Overall, a nice experience and dinner. OH almost forgot! The ski ball machine in the back! Was craving a burger and saw the pictures of the food here and thought it would be a good place to stop by. Went before the dinner rush so plenty of seating and service was prompt. Waited all of 1 minute before being seated outside. No complaints about the general ambiance or the service. Friendly people. Bonus points for the David Attenborough documentary playing in the bathrooms (very interesting to realize). Back to the food. Got the California poutine special. If there is one thing this place does amazingly well it's fries. Perfectly crispy and flavorful. The beer cheese was a very strong flavor and not sure if I would have liked it if I didn't add meat. Also not sure if it could be considered a poutine by definition but I digress. Got the state burger as my main dish. Have to say that the consistency isn't the best. My friend got the same but his was actually medium rare while mine was medium well (though asked for the same). Added cheese which wasn't melted in the slightest. Overall it felt like I was tasting each component separately and it didn't come together. It was lacking some seasoning or something. But the garlic fries were great! (and super garlicky). Long story short. Get the fries. Some work to be done on the burgers. Might be back to check out some other dishes if I'm in the area. read more

Great brews and delicious food! What more could anyone ask for? State Room sure knows how to impress. Stopped in for happy hour and dinner with friends on a weekday evening and we had a really fun time here. They've got a bangin' little happy hour if you can make it. It's from 3-5 during the week so if you can swing it, definitely hit this place up for some great happy hour deals. I was able to snag some $1.50 oysters and a $4 pint deal for my beer. I really love the look of the bar. They have all of their alcohol bottles lined up against the wall, and it glows during the evening. They've also got an adorable covered patio right in the front with heatlamps for those chilly evenings. The beer selection is great and they've also got some really tasty cocktails. Gotta take a detour over to the food department. Wowza! The food here is the bidness! State Room is known for their burgers but ironically, none of us ordered this. We ordered the crunchy fried chicken, Cubano sandwich, shrimp caesar salad, and a churro sundae which we split for dessert. When I tell you that everything tasted amazing... daaaayum! The fried chicken was definitely crispy. It was nice and juicy on the inside and was seasoned just right. It came alongside a generous mound of tasty coleslaw and a honey butter biscuit. Who knew that fried chicken from a Marin taproom could taste this good? Well, it did and I'm glad that I got a taste of it. That Cubano sammy was off the hook! The bread was a mix of soft and crispy and the cheese was melted to perfection. I had the Caesar salad with prawns and it was absolutely scrumptious. The prawns were nice and plump and the croutons added a nice garlicky and cracked pepper taste. My only complaint about the salad was that it didn't have enough damn prawns! For an extra $6, they only gave me 5. That's more than $1 per shrimp! Womp womp. Nevertheless, it was very tasty and you best believe that I scraped my plate CLEAN, mmkay? The churro sundae was the icing on the cake for us. The combination of the warm and sticky churro paired with cold ice cream and fresh berries was just dynamite. It wasn't too sweet but juuuust sweet enough. I would get this dessert again in a heartbeat. Service was good but slow at times. The place was packed so I can understand why. We actually got the pleasure of meeting the manager and he was very friendly. All in all, State Room is truly a hoppin' spot and I'd recommend it to anyone who's looking for delicious food and great drinks in San Rafael. read more

State Room was an accidental find, but is now worthy of full review. I sat at the bar for a late lunch. The bartender was great. Very friendly and attentive. Some great beers which you would expect since it is a brewery. I also noticed a strong selection of spirits, bourbon, scotch, tequila were notable. They have a wood fired pizza oven and the chef made me the best Margarita pizza I have had in a while. It was all so good I came back the next day and had the exact same experience. The place has a cool vibe and the food is the star of the show. Give State Room a try. I think you'll enjoy it. read more

My friend ordered a weird drink and they didn't make it great the first time so they made it again perfectly and didn't charge for the second one. I have never been a person who thought chicken wings were something to eat....until, at age 55, I ordered wings at this hot spot a week ago. Now can't wait to get back for another try. I liked the General Tsao (?) wings rather than BBQ for the messines factor. I have tried to duplicate the thrill of eating a little meaty chicken bite, even tried them at Perry's, but they didn't compare to these. Thank you State Room. I almost gave this place 5 stars but it's a bit pricey for what you get. This was the 2nd time I've been here. This restaurant replaced my beloved Broken Drum. My friend and I both ordered the Seoul Bowl Bibimbop. As is the case with Bibimbop, it was a melange of flavors, textures and foods. It was very good, but would get the spicy part of it on the side next time. It was a touch above my comfort level. They have an above average selection of draft beers and house cocktails. Check out the Filibuster Double IPA if you like very flavorful and strong IPAs. They also have wine. I will be back. read more

I dined at the bar on a weeknight and the service was quite good. The bartender was very welcoming and quick. However the wood fired scampi special was MEH. Meh. I wanted to like them so much more than I did. We had the grass-fed beef burger, the brussels sprouts, the deviled eggs, and last but not least, the burrata, which was incredibly good. However, the other 3 dishes were almost completely lacking in flavor, and 3 out of 4 is not very encouraging. A little mustard in the deviled eggs please? Cook the brussels sprouts long enough to develop some crispness and char? Season the hamburger patty a tiny bit?? Service was odd. We couldn't really tell who our server was since several people seemed to be waiting on us. One person annoyingly hovered and another kept messing up by forgetting things, and even started grabbing plates we were actively eating from because he apparently thought we were moving to another table. My BF had to literally snatch the plate back away from him. Oh, and although this is a brew house, we were not that impressed with the beer or wine either. The drink menu seemed exciting but what we received was average at best. However, the burrata, which was served with an olive tapenade, pomegranate seeds, and just-fork-tender asparagus, saved the day and this review. If all the food had been that good, I would have happily given five stars. Sadly, that one item will probably not be worth a return visit. read more

I really want to love this place. It's walking distance from our house and feels like it could be such an awesome local haunt. But the service is never great nor is the food anything to write home about (been there at least 5 times for dinner and brunch once).
