One of my favorite restaurants in the city. It has the best burgers I have ever had, amazing atmosphere and service, and even good vegan options. It serves both breakfast and lunch/dinner options at medium prices. The wait is a little long (just on the longer side of reasonable) but the food makes it all worth it. I live in the neighborhood and cannot resist coming here at least a few times a month. Their fish and chips was really yummy, just like I like it: flakey, mostly fish, not alot of heavy, greasy batter like I have gotten even from more pricey restaurants. I was drawn by the pictures on the web, and I went tonight and had a very good dinner in a relaxed atmosphere, great service and decent price. Had the most amazing chicken sandwich ever! We called to see if they were showing the NBA game, Petra was amazing on the phone and said yes, they have the game on. We arrived, had to wait for a table and we're in ah of the food that others were eating. We decided to each get the chicken sandwich and it truly was the best chicken sandwich we've ever had. Son had a salmon burger and said it was too, one of the best he's had. Cocktails were spot on, Petra was our server and she was amazing. She recommended margaritas that didn't disappoint. Note: I typically do not rate establishments based on being within walking distance to my house. However, I will say State & Central is central to the Bigelow neighborhood. (See what I did there. It's a pun!) It kindly allows us working stiffs the ability to drown our work day sorrows in a pint or tent of cold brews, and lube up the ole tummy tube with succulent beefy grease. Now, I don't want to sound like a drunkard, there are of course other booze holes on the top of the eastside hill, even some that don't make you feel like a pickled ass when you walk in. However, it can't be stated enough how good it is to have a dining and wining (pun again. damn.) establishment that you can unwind after a brutal day working at the old typity-type machine. State & Central has a great variety of "Americana" styled menu options. I particularly like the juicy lucy(?), the fried chicken, and the COLD (cold in bold for emphasis that it is refreshingly cold) beer options. I am thankful for this being where it is, and it certainly is better than the "used sports equipment" place that was selling meth after hours in the same location. A welcome addition to any neighborhood, but glad it's in mine because now I don't have to stumble my fat butt up the hill after a few beers and burgers. read more

I was expecting to not enjoy this place, I don't really know why? But I drive by it everyday for years and finally tried it out. It was so good! The salmon in the Salmon Burger was very fresh and everything was seasoned well. All the veggies in my burger were so crisp and yummy. And the fried pickles are some of the better ones in Olympia. Wish somewhere had pickles spears like Jakes used to! Will probably be becoming a regular here now lol read more

This place is Fabulous! A groovy little neighborly restaurant! Very laid back and come as you are kind of place that will have you feeling cool just being there! It's street parking but we had no problem finding parking on the street and walking over. It's away from the noisy down-town business area but not out of the way if you work in Olympia. If you happen to live within a mile or so from this little Gem, boy are you lucky! I'd walk over every Sunday with the family for sure! It's small with about 12 tables and a bar with about 6-8 stools. It's also a bar, so you must be 21 to sit at stools. During the Summer I think they may have outdoor seating , it's set up that way, so if they don't, they should :) My waitress was down right funky cool! She had a very unique straightforward style that worked! I really liked her and everything about the place was super cool! Now to the Food! Oh my Word! Can you say Scrumptious Deliumptious! I ordered the Juicy Lucy Burger with Bacon and a side of cheese curds! First time trying cheese curds and I'm hooked! Wow! My burger was delicious and I did my best to finish every bite! Plan on having leftovers, it's a hearty portion! Now, if you're looking for cheap eats, maybe not , it's moderately priced but worth every penny! I noticed they had about 12 different beers on tap, top shelf liquor (Cabo Wabo Tequila) my Favorite! Plenty of Bloody Mary's were ordered while we were dining, so they must be delicious?! My fiancé and I found ourselves at State and Central one rainy evening. It had a few tables filled, but not overcrowded. We were immediately greeted by a man (who we assumed was either a manager or the owner), who gave us our menus and asked for our drink orders. We decided on the grilled cheese with tomato soup, and the bratwurst with the works. Inside was a good space, large enough for both a dining and bar experience. The interior was made of wood, and the inside had a very modern but homey feel. Now let me tell you- I am NOT a fan of tomato soup. I accidentally forgot to ask for fries as a substitute, and I'm SO GLAD I did! Their tomato soup is nothing like I have ever tasted before. It had a good balance of tomato, cheese, and other vegetables to give it more of a stew consistency with a lunch of flavor. Dipping my grilled cheese was the ultimate combination! My fiancé fantasizes about bratwurst from Leavenworth, and State and Central definitely brought him back. Their ingredients seems so fresh and authentic, you can tell that they really care about the food they serve. The best part of the evening was the service. Our waiter came at the appropriate times, checking in on how the food tasted and filling up our water cups without asking. The food came out quick and hot. We have been here twice since, and don't plan on stopping! If you're tired of the same old chain food, State and Central is definitely where you want to be. read more

I was disappointed. My husband said his bacon omelet was good. I ordered the waffle and fried chicken. Instead of a waffle, I got a Belgian waffle which would've been okay had they a) added any salt at all to the waffle batter and b) not cooked it so long that it had long since passed from "crispy" to "rock hard". Topping my flat-tasting, hard waffle was two, essentially, chicken schnitzels. The moment you touched them with a fork, what breading had hung on fell off, so improperly breaded. They, too, were way under-seasoned and had been cooked to the dry, seriously stringy stage, so improperly cooked and seasoned. The happiest sight was seeing the waiter come back with the coffee pot because dry waffle plus dry chicken equals very thirsty person. Guys...waffle. Regular waffle. Fried chicken. Honest-to-god actual fried chicken. Don't cremate either and convince whoever is buying your supplies to get some maple syrup that tastes like something other than vaguely sweet. Maple-flavored would be nice. Husband tried some of my breakfast--his verdict was that the best thing was his omelet and the second best thing on the table were the tater tots with his omelet. He hates potatoes, so maybe that gives you an idea. Maybe an off day. Maybe an inexperienced cook. Our waiter was lovely, but that's not a good enough reason for me to try it again any time real soon. read more

Good simple menu with food that is accessible meaning it's crafted without pretense. You don't have to be a super foodie to enjoy eating here. Two big, big deals here, first off they use FRESH MEAT for their burgers *and* they cut their own fries! How hard is that? If I could give them six stars I would. They also offer their take on the Midwest classic "Juicy Lucy" which is a burger patty wrapped around a chunk of cheese. I've never had the original so I can't make a comparison but this is really well done and a fun way to eat a cheeseburger. read more

Such a cool little restaurant. My husband and I had a date night here. I've been wanting to try this place for a long time, as I pass it on my way to work everyday. This is what I loved: We got a table right away, the prices are reasonable, the menu headers are quirky, our food came quickly, our drinks were never empty, and their frys are truly AMAZING! What I didn't love: It was pretty loud in there. The tables are all pretty close together, and I felt like I heard the full conversations of the 4 tables around us. The waitress was on her phone behind the bar, the ranch sauce on the chicken burger tasted odd to me, their sweet tea wasn't great, and there was no signs about whether to seat ourself or not when we walked in so we just stood there awkwardly until someone saw us. State & Central Located in Olympia, WA, this neighborhood restaurant is known for its boneless fried chicken and country gravy, served with fresh cut fries and slaw. I like the fried chicken and country gravy well enough, though it benefited from a sprinkle of salt. The shoestring fries, were "meh," as well as the slaw, which was not fresh. I bought a piece of marionberry pie to go. I opened the box before leaving only to find that the tip of the pie was missing. I was surprised that anyone who works in the kitchen would send out a desert looking that way, but I was too embarrassed on their behalf to take a picture of it, which in retrospect I regret. I also should've known better because the waitress shared with me that the pies were not made in house and she did not know who made them because this restaurant is one of three in Olympia that are owned by the same people who own what she referred to as Ribeyes in Centralia. In my experience, it is difficult enough to open a restaurant and subsequently a second location, but few have the skill level required to simultaneously own and operate four different restaurants. For that reason, as well as my own dining experience, I would have to think twice before eating here again. This review is based on my experience dining there in May 2019. read more
