We were in Olympia for a visit to The Evergreen State College and since we were in town, a stop at State & Central was mandatory. We've eaten here several times over the years, this was the first time we eat dinner here. Fam. Let me tell you, the very reasonable lunch size portions? They're significantly bigger on the dinner menu. Almost disturbingly so Being able to get a selection of interesting regional beers is always a draw, tonight was no exception. And the pretty good lunch menu is expanded for the dinner hour - as well as the portion sizes being expanded. I ordered the fish and chips, my partner ordered the bar steak (which was New York strip), and her daughter ordered the salmon burger with fries. Because it was a special, we also got a giant order of poutine. Despite being in almost at closing, the service was absolutely spectacular. My daughter lives within walking distance to this restaurant for almost a year but we had never stopped in until now. Our bad! It's actually a solid pub grub. We walked in at about 5:30 on a Thursday and it was busy but still had a few open tables. We were greeted warmly by our server. She recommended the blackberry margarita and we both said yes please! It was delicious. I got the Juicy Lucy and my kid got the Chili Burger which is open faced. They both were pretty good. The total before tip came to $74. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The reason I knocked a star off is because the few available tables when we arrived were all dirty, one with plates and cups still.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Another thing I see now looking at my receipt is that the burgers were both 50 cents more than what it says on the menu. $1 more is not huge but I don't like the feeling of the "wool being pulled over my eyes". We arrived here after visiting a small convention and were pretty hungry. We decided on State and Central as my boyfriend had been craving burgers so I looked to see what was available. This was also Mother's Day weekend so I wanted to pick a spot that wasn't too crowded. As we arrived, street parking was almost tough but we were able to find a spot nearby. However, the rest of the sandwich was decent. Now the juicy lucy is definitely worth getting as it was absolutely seasoned to perfection and the addition of the egg and bacon was phenomenal. What a lovely place! I came here for lunch with a friend. She ordered a salad and I had a salmon sandwich. Salad portion was huge! My sandwich was delicious. And I haven't eaten this kind of French fries in a while. They were freshly cooked with a perfect crunch. I got dinner here one night while in Olympia working for a few days. Inside is really cute, it reminded me of our neighborhood pub but more modern. The menu has decent, lots of good choices. I settled on the juicy Lucy burger which had cheese stuffed in the middle. It was really large in size. I really enjoyed it. It was prettty good, I was expecting more cheese to ooze out but I really like the amount I got cus sometimes it's a bit too overwhelming in flavor. Service was really good. I sat at the bar and talked a bit with one of the staff working. She was super friendly, kind of bummed I didn't grab a name but she gave me some good food recommendation for the rest of my stay. Every time I drive by this place I take note that I have to stop by and try it. Finally did and was not disappointed. Sis and I weren't all that hungry, so we split the salad and it was a surprisingly large portion. We also split a smash burger and it was the perfect amount of food. Finally we split the Dutch apple pie and it's not the best I've had, but it was pretty solid and of course having it a la mode made it better. The waitress told us it was made at the Ribeye Restaurant that you see on the left on the way down 5 South as you are on your way to Centralia. We found our way here to have dinner on a Saturday Night after it was taking too long to find parking for some other restaurant candidates in Downtown Olympia. Parking was a bit tight for this place, as there were only three diagonal "Compact" stalls and no room to back out and leave via another way; instead, you have to back out completely on to Central St in order to leave the parking lot. Our party arrived before the dinner rush (around 5-5:30 pm) and were attended to and seated promptly. The place was probably more than half full at this point. There were three different items from the menu that we tried: bar steak, cheeseburger and fries, and poutine fries. For the bar steak, our request was to have it prepared medium rare. What we ended up with was definitely rare, as only the outer layer was charred and everything else was deeply red inside. The steak was also over-salted, and as another reviewer mentioned, it also had a large amount of gristle and fat. The cheeseburgers and fries were just OK. One person in our party ate everything while another couldn't bring themselves to finish it. The french fries were more of a standout than the burger patty or brioche bun in terms of texture and taste. The poutine fries, utilizing the aforementioned delicious french fries as a base, turned out to be the best plate of the evening. When the server came by to ask us how the food was, we were forthcoming about the bar steak and our disappointment at so many of this main entree's shortcomings. With credit due to State & Central and our server, we received about a 15-20% discount on our total bill for the disappointing outcome with the steak. Depending on what you order, this place could be worthy of a 4-star (out of 5) drinking and dining experience, but for us, it ended up falling right in the middle. read more

My wife and I decided to have breakfast out and thought we would try State & Central. I had eggs and bacon and my wife had the veggie omelette. It came with a biscuit, the butter was very hard so I cut the biscuit in half and put the butter in between. After a couple of minutes it was still hard as a rock. The biscuit was barely warm in the first place. I wanted hash browns but every item on the menu came with French fry's. Who eats French fry's for breakfast? I liked the fries, a great crunchy crust, and light on the inside. My wife said her burger was ok to decent. She said she would have it again, but it wasn't amazing or anything. The buns they use were really good. Wish we could give half stars. Because service, food and ambiance was a solid 4.5 star experience. We will go back and try more things from the menu. I am so sad!!! I was looking forward to trying this place out!! I have heard so much about it!!
