I have worked with Alan at START Physical Therapy regularly for almost a year after spending 10+ years with chronic lower back pain with sciatica and hip pain (due to a L4/L5 disc protrusion and hip labral pathology). I had a great experience at START. Around a year and a half ago I injured my ankle (PTTD, achilles tendinitis) and since then i have had chronic pain in my hip, lower back, and shoulder along with some issues with my gait. I'd been to 4 different PTs before START and was never able to definitively resolve my pain and gait issues. After beginning work with Alan I began to see results immediately. Within a week my hip and lower back pain completely dissipated. Within 4 weeks, the major issues with my gait had been resolved. By the end of my sessions with Alan I (literally) walked away not only pain free but with confidence in my gait and a robust understanding of my body mechanics. The main difference with START and other PTs I've been to, is that the doctors here spend the full hour 1:1 with you and give you their undivided attention during that time. As a result it seems that the practice shines when it comes to complicated cases like mine where there isn't an easy diagnosis and plan to follow. I went to START after a troubling doctor's visit with some spinal asymmetry but no pain. Upon arriving, Alan greeted me and we assessed my goals and previous injuries. Naively, I thought the answer would be to address the spine first. However, Alana started by building me a stable base from the ground up. This is why I think START differs from others. It is not about a quick fix. It is rather to build you a foundation that is sustainable for the rest of your life. By creating programs that are easy to follow, Alan helps you go through every step of the process. However, to build something is not easy. You need to put in the work at home (you don't need any extra equipment). However, if you truly want a sustainable solution for your pain it is most definitely worth it. The best part is the inside of the facility is equipped with a gym. Once START builds you the proper foundation, they teach you how to properly strengthen it through both body weight and weighted exercises. It was eye-opening to feel more muscle contraction of exercises I had been doing for years by doing it with only my body weight and proper form. I truly believe everyone should do PRI in some form, and I think START's approach to PRI as a system sets them apart. It is not a one size fits all. I started seeing him because of a shoulder impingement issue after starting surfing again after 2 years off due to a wrist fracture that required surgery and metal plate. I am 65 years old and am now surfing 5 days per week. We also started working on my hips and plyometrics to prepare me for running. I had not run for 35 years and now run a mile 2x/ week and started sprinting once per week. Collin takes the time to thoroughly assess you and give you the exercises to accomplish your goals. I currently only see him once per month(originally once per week). The prior health insurance PT was cookie cutter exercises that you would find on you tube and was a waste of time. Unlike usual PT clinics where therapists spend only 15 minutes or so with patients before assistants take over, Collin spends the entire one hour session with me every time. Went in for nagging rear shoulder pain + plantar fasciitis (1 year of pain). It's been 2 months and Collin has been great with designing a plan and helping me identify and work through the issues. - Created a plan - Listened to my feedback to realigned my goals with what was possible (eg turns out you can't just sprint with foot pain) - 1 full hour of undivided attention and rehab - Breaks down science and reason for my pain and WHY we are doing certain exercises 1 on 1 attention is critical and this is night and day compared to most physical therapy places I've attended (had nagging knee issues previously). My pain is reduced in my shoulder and I can now go for very slow jogs! My arches / calves / Achilles are stronger and able to handle load. I'm lifting again (light weight - do not want to rush back into lifting and re-injure it). I'm on the right path and have finally made progress. It feels great. I have been dealing with stubborn chronic pain and tension headaches since a young age. I was referred by my regular physical therapist to Alan since his expertise might address the root cause of my issues. Alan is professional and caring. He answered all my questions patiently. His solutions to problems is individualized, not your typical one size fits all treatments. I know that because my husband goes to Alan too and we have completely different treatments and exercises, even though our issues look similar.
