Dr.Thomas suggested doing a full evaluation to make sure nothing serious was going on, and I'm so glad he did. I ended up working with him, and during that time, he helped me figure out the root cause of my knee pain. From Day One, he took the time to really listen to my concerns, assess my condition thoroughly and created a treatment plan that was personalized specifically for me. I had been dealing with a bad hamstring for months. The running joke amongst my friends is that my hammy is made of paper. After discussing these issues, my PCP recommended that I go to Southland. Dr. Jose was awesome and what I especially liked is that he himself is an athlete and understands the common issues that can plague current and former athletes. I've been receiving PT here twice a week for the last 2 months and I much stronger and getting better every time. My PT gives massages to targeted areas every time then I do exercises to help strengthen my lower back. These are exercises i can continue to do at home (most of them). The best PT I've been to (out of 6+ others I've been to) as a frequently injured surfer. They explain why you got injured, why the exercises will help, why warmups actually help (they aren't just making you warmer). Once you get your initial appointment, follow-ups are easy to schedule. And the vibes within the office are awesome, it feels like the whole team that works there enjoys doing so. It's also cool that they have a lot of bilingual staff. They treat both people who want return to daily activity like walking after a surgery and athletes. As a very active person who gets injured frequently, I appreciate that they take my rehab to return to sport seriously and don't mark me as done once my arm doesn't hurt around the house. They also don't ask me to stop surfing for an unreasonable amount of time and coach me through a gradual return. They also have me building my arches and foot strength instead of just shoving me into insoles with supporting shoes. No other PT has ever done that! As I've started to go to more and more physical therapy places, I've started to realize which ones are actually good versus the supposedly good ones. Southlands model probably works for most injuries but I heavily do not recommend going here if you have thoracic outlet syndrome, One of the rarest and hardest repetitive strain injuries to deal with. If there's one thing I noticed about many physical therapy places is that they like to treat their patients like a zoo. When you actually see a therapist for like 10 to 15 minutes. It is pretty nice because usually the massage or stretches or whatever they need to do is nice. And from what I've seen, all the therapists are pretty nice. The issues for me come when we deal with the fact that many physical therapy places use physical therapist assistance. Now I don't dislike the idea of physical therapy assistance, when you have a lot of patients you do have to meet the demand. However, I found that in practice, usually physical therapy assistance usually have to deal with two to four patients at a time. So when they're the ones who have to show patients, how to do their exercise and then stretches. If it's a common one then it's probably easy to tell the patient how to do it. The real issue comes is when you do an exercise or stretch and it starts to hurt. For my experience at Southland, the physical therapy assistant will try to give you suggestions to make it hurt less, but it doesn't always work. Thing that really angers me about a lot of physical therapy places is many times the physical therapy assistance will have to keep going between different people. So you don't even know if you're doing the exercises or stretches correctly. Southland physical therapy sadly falls this very common practice. What does it help is if you need to find an alternate way to do exercises and the physical therapy assistant doesn't know of a way to do it. Many times they will have to default to asking the actual physical therapist for help but they're usually busy with somebody else. I already gone to a couple other physical therapy places that have full on one to one physical therapy to patient practices, which I like a lot more. Not only does the physical therapist get to see you for the whole 40 minutes, but they get to intimately help you make sure you're doing the correct exercises with the right form and everything. I know that physical therapy assistance is probably a popular job since it's a nice way to get foot in the door. And stuff. I've been to places where even though they had physical therapy assistance, they at least only had one to two patients a time at most and they were a lot better at figuring out alternatives for exercises that hurt. However, sadly Southland physical therapies practice does it in the typical way that I don't like. We just unfortunate because the people there are actually nice enough which is the only reason I didn't give this a lower star rating. However, after just 2 to 3 weeks I couldn't take the fact that after every session I just felt like another animal in the zoo to take care of, hell. More like half taken care of because the physical therapist abandons you after 10 minutes, and then when a physical therapy assistant doesn't know how to help you, they just put you on electric stimulation. Another smaller note, this room is really tiny yet they somehow cram in a lot of patience. Somehow they still find a way to walk away from a patient and not keep track of their form of exercising and stretching if they needed it. To reiterate, if you have a relatively common issue, were you just need minimal watching then? I guess Southland physical therapy works well enough, but it's basically just like any other insurance supported physical therapist. After these last 2 years, I've much preferred one-to-one physical therapist to patient practices, so I will not be supporting places like this anymore. read more

Great experience! Came to Southland PT to rehab a torn tendon in my ankle. They got me back on my feet (literally) in just a few months and am back playing basketball at pre-injury level. Love that everyone here really seems to care about their patients, and everyone is very friendly and supportive, from the admins to the doctors to the aids. They allow for as much time as you need to get through your exercises (some days I would be there for close to 1.5 hours). Would confidently refer close friends and family. Throughout the three times I've gone to Southland, I haven't had any issues with my experiences there. The front staff is always very kind and helpful when setting appointments or helping reschedule. The assistants care is genuine and doesn't feel forced at all. I was lucky enough to be assigned Dr. Jose all three times and have been successfully recovering from all my injuries. As a Brazilian jiu jitsu practitioner i injured my knee (lateral meniscus) a little over a month prior to a competition. After having been told to get surgery I instead went to seek physical therapy. Luckily for me I was treated by Dr Tommy. He listened to me and my needs to get me ready for the competition. Below is a review I wrote when I first came here, but I've come back since and honestly I am astounded by the ability and knowledge Dr Tommy has. I had to see other physical therapists due to insurance issues, and they were mediocre in comparison. Dr T was able to diagnose my issue and provide new stretches and workouts that others did not. I felt immediate relief and saw a significant improvement in under a month, where I had previously seen other physical therapists for months and saw no improvement at all. In some cases my injury was getting worse! There is no place more worthy of 5 stars in Southland PT in my opinion. Very capable doctors, and a system for tackling patients' pain that just works! Between the time you get with your PT and the workouts done there, you are really put in a position to succeed. Older review: Amazing place. I injured my back and a close friend suggested I visit Southland Physical Therapy in Irvine. On that advice, I attended multiple sessions at this location, and I was thoroughly impressed. The front desk employees are courteous and truly help keep up with your scheduled physical therapy sessions- reminding the day before, printing schedules and day-of reminders. I worked with multiple physical therapists, including Fergie and Bao, both were amazing to work with and explained each step of my recovery. Fergie was exceptionally kind and knowledgeable about my back injury and designed a fantastic workout routine for me. Bao really challenged me to make the most of my time at Southland Physical Therapy by giving me workouts that ramped up in difficulty (gently) with time. I've had a number of injuries in my day and never really had much success with PT. My experience is they give you an exercise band and tell you to go play around in the corner. I'm happy to say PT with Jose at Southland was quite different! Jose help me diagnosed the issue, showed me ways to get immediate relief, and then taught me exercises to strengthen the muscles that would help provide long term relief and reduce risk of future injuries. This loop of relieve, train, and re-evaluate makes a lot of sense to me, and really helped solve both my issues (shoulder and back). I plan on getting hurt again just so I can come back. read more

I'll preface this by saying I've never seen a physical therapist before and never thought I would need to, but I started training for a marathon and found myself injured 11 weeks-deep into my training plan. With only 7 weeks to go before race day I didn't have time to go through Kaiser and get a referral to one of their PTs so I decided to give Southland a shot and pay out of pocket. I'm very grateful I did. Dr Jose has been my go-to for my posterior tibial tendon issue and through a series of different strengthening exercises and soft tissue work I was able to decrease my symptoms and maintain enough of my fitness to get to the starting line. Our goal was to get through the race without worsening the injury and boy, did we. I was able to run the 26 miles with my mind on the run and not my foot. I felt a bit of soreness around mile 3 that faded away and never came back for the remainder of the race. I couldn't believe it. Now that the race is over I plan to pick back up with the team at Southland and get back to 100%. I'm very proactive about my pain and have been hounding Jose with all kinds of questions but he always seems eager to help and happy to explain. I received the best care at this facility. I could hardly raise my right arm in any direction. I called and received an initial appointment in just a few days. On arrival I waited less than ten minutes to be evaluated by the doctor. He quickly diagnosed my problem and immediately started treatment. Significant muscle atrophy (due to a previous injury) caused me to experience pain in my right knee during even menial physical activity. Extremely happy that I chose SPT for my rehab after shoulder surgery (bicep tenodesis & joint repair). Dr. Tommy and everyone at the office was very knowledgeable, professional and friendly. horrible!! do not come here!! i received the worst pt session on tue 10/11 and it resulted in fracturing the surgery site of the complete shoulder reversal replacement surgery i had july 3rd. they talked a good game after i explained the poor pt i received from yet another company which resulted in the reversal replacement surgery. in one session he had me do 3/4 new exercises that were too aggressive for me and after leaving the office, i was unable to extend or raise my affected arm!! dr paul (?) told me " he was pushing me hard that morning!" why?? after i told him i was already sore from the previous day's exercises...why did he decide to aggressively attack my arm/shoulder with the protocol? why = don't they pay attention and listen to the patient!! if you tell your pt that you're sore and he proceeds to annihilate your affected area with never before done exercises, get up and leave!! do not continue what doesn't feel right for your body and surgery rehab. if its causing pain, stop doing what they tell you. this industry has become all about $$ and packing in as many people as possible. not about individual care or about rehab. its about your $$. this fight is just beginning for me, but i warn you do not come to this pt office unless you're ready for bad results!! this stops now! im not going to be a guinea pig for inattentive and distracted unconscionable physical therapists who damage your body beyond repair and leave you no options but.... read more

Have been coming to Southland for the last month and have been very happy with the progress made from working with Jose. I am in physical therapy for a cracked femur which occurred about a year ago and recurring leg pain that went unresolved from my injury. After the first few sessions I immediately felt relief when walking and have been able to do workouts at home again after struggling to walk or work in person for months. Jose has helped a lot by providing challenging but helpful exercises and helping realign my hip joint which had become off balance. All of the staff helping with exercises are polite and welcoming which makes the overall experience more enjoyable. Tommy is the best physical therapist I have ever been to. I went to five other physical therapist to fix my shoulder after a rowing injury. I tried to heal it for about a year and nothing worked. I suffered from a sciatic pain for more than a year and had cortisone injections for many times. In between the injections, I went to different physical therapy centers and acupuncture doctors several times, but none of them really worked. My normal life was impacted seriously. Finally I went to Southland Physical Therapy at Woodbridge. At first I did not have confidence at all. Out of expectations, the first time when the Physical Therapist Kaitlyn Raymundo worked on me, I felt the difference. A pain that had been bothering me for a year was almost gone. After several weeks of PT exercises, one symptom after another was reducing little by little and finally gone. I can walk and move around almost normally. I can cook in the kitchen for longer time. I can do grocery shopping for half an hour or more without problems. Kaitlyn has given me a new life. I greatly appreciate her professional knowledge and technique. Other than Kaitlyn, the assistants and front desk staff are all very nice and helpful. This is the best PT center I have ever visited. I will go there again when I have more needs. read more
