I brought my 2008 Jeep Wrangler to Starr Auto because it wouldn't start unless I shifted between Park and Neutral several times. I explained that I believed the issue was caused by the neutral safety switch, which is a known and common issue for this model. Instead of inspecting that part, the shop replaced my starter and battery terminal posts, charging me $966. The problem was never fixed -- the Jeep still has the exact same starting issue. When I returned, Starr Auto admitted it might actually be the neutral safety switch and said they could repair it for another $200. That clearly shows the first repair was misdiagnosed and unnecessary. I'm a disabled veteran with VA disabled license plates, and I rely on my vehicle for daily mobility. I trusted this shop to treat me fairly, but instead I feel taken advantage of and disappointed by their lack of professionalism and integrity. I've since filed a credit card dispute for the $966 charge and would strongly caution other customers -- especially veterans -- to avoid this business. read more

The most trustworthy shop I've ever had work on my vehicles. I previously wrote a very negative review that was based on a cellphone problem (T-Mo did not deliver a voicemail message left by the shop). I regret that overly negative review. I've taken a few cars here over the years. Most recent was a front end noise that turned out to be a broken coil spring. Starr finds the problem, plans the right fix (or presents options, especially good for keeping old cars going) and does good work. With some minor work needing to be done on my car, I brought it in to the guys at Starr based on the recommendation of a friend. I now have a new favorite autoshop. I know a little bit about cars and had a good idea about what needed to be done on mine, but I didn't let on when I first brought it in. The guys took a look and found what I suspected-- so I find them very trustworthy! Their repairs were done quickly and at a fair price. They told me of a maintenance issue that would be coming up in a few months, but made no pressure to try and get it done now. They even went the extra mile to lube up a squeeky door hinge without being asked! Great work! read more

I've been going here for a little over a year now, on my aunt's recommendation who has been a customer for over 20 years. They're straight shooters over at Starr, lemme tell ya. They say what they do, and they do what they say. I brought my car in about a month ago to find out what was making a grinding noise. They did a free estimate and told me I needed a bearing replaced. I didn't have the money to fix it then, so they warned me that if I let it go too long, it would damage the hub, which would double the cost. The sound got much worse over the course of a month and I thought for sure the hub would be wrecked, but they squeezed me into their busy schedule and had me up and running in a couple hours. Didn't try to screw me for the hub, and they have never pushed me to buy anything. Customer for life! read more

Jerry and the guys at Starr Automotive are the best! They have always been very honest about explaining the work that needs to be done and in their pricing. Most recently they went above and beyond the call of the service. After all the rain we had this fall, a bunch of water gathered in the interior panel of my car and as a result it flooded the floor of my car on one side. It was important to them that my car get dry so as not to mold, smell, and affect the air quality (they know I have asthma). They could have charged me to take the interior apart so they could hang the carpet out to dry, but they didn't want to charge me for all of that labor. Instead to dry my car out, they brought in a dehumidifier and dried my entire car out at no additional cost. It took about 10 days for it to fully dry. Then they just charged me for the oil change I came in for. Another example. My car is over 10 years old and I like to road trip to the North Shore. They will often just do a once over on my car to make sure everything looks good just to give me peace of mind before I get on the road. I just don't know of any other business that would have this level of dedication to its customers. They are all stars over there, that's for sure. read more

I have been going to Starr for my service for about 18 months now. I used to dread taking cars in to get worked on but not since I started coming here. I make the drive from out in the suburbs and arrange rides to and from the shop when I need things done because the service and honesty is worth every bit of logistical hastle. I won't take my car anywhere else for repairs. Recently, I had an oil change done at another shop for convenience. They informed me that two of the CV boots had "blown out" and needed to be replaced. I scheduled a drop off to Starr, and sure enough the other shop was lying. Nothing wrong with the boots. The boots are $150 and surely even with Starr's reasonable labor prices I'd have been looking at least $200-250 in total to replace them. This shop is friendly, quick, and most of all honest. Their work is excellent, and they never recommend anything to be done if it doesn't need fixing. If it ain't broken, don't fix it.... and they don't! They won't try to get you to do things early, they won't hoodwink you, but they WILL meet you with a smile and an accurate timeline of when your car will be fixed and at least for me, the estimates have always ended up being accurate or the actual work being less. This shop is worth every bit of the drive to get your work done. I'll never go anywhere else. read more

As we all know it's hard to find a local mechanic that you can trust and that's affordable.. Recently my vehicle broke down and the closest mechanic was Start Automotive on 4001 e lake street. It was towards the end of the day and I could tell they were about to close up business for the day..I was greeted by manager Zack Starr who got my vehicle info and what was wrong with it..He then proceeded out to my vehicle jumped under the car and spotted the issue immediately..(knowing they were closing I was so surprised at how nice he was and how he made me feel like I wasn't putting him out) We went back in and he ordered the parts and he assured me it would be fixed the next day.. Sure enough it was fixed the next day and the parts and labor were a pleasant surprise.. Needless to say I live in Burnsville and I will be making the trip to Mpls from now on to Starr Automotive..Thanks Zack Starr for making me feel at home.. read more
