Bach & Rock was a shop we just stumbled across while we were out and about in Astoria. It was a…read morepart of downtown we haven't explored too thoroughly prior which is the explanation I am going with. This place is loaded with musical instruments, they sell CD's and other physical forms of music that have long stopped seeing new prints in a broad way. For movies they have DVD's, VHS and probably any other form of physical media I am not mentioning for movies. On top of that this place is kind of an incense heaven. The selection is huge and there were at least five different spots I found in the store where they had incense sticks. I bought quite a bit and was pleased with finding so many scents I don't normally come across. The atmosphere is quirky to say the least. Not only is their windblowing instruments everywhere, it's loaded with plants and other decor that definitely gives this place a unique signature. And of course the fact that a real parrot was here only enhanced that. And of course we had to swing by and say "hi" to the bird.

At the time of writing, there are no 3 star reviews and I was tempted to give one but I'm giving a…read more4 star review. First off, I'm the only person, apparently, to notice all the wind instruments in this place, mainly brass instruments. I don't think I've read another review that even mentions the wind instruments. HELLO! The place is packed with them...every shape size and sort. Lots of trumpets, alto/tenor horns (really cool), piccolo trumpets, trombones, valve trombones, tubas, at least one bassoon, and much more. I give it five stars for the instruments. Absolutely dazzling to look at. I asked the "guy" where they source them from and he shot back "all over the world." I plan to go back and buy a trumpet. Great incense section. And yes, the records, cds and tapes. Very impressive. I actually did not see a cat, dog or bird. And I lost part of my smell-o-factory from covid so I didn't smell any pet smells. So why the 4 star review and not a 5 star review? Well, it's an odd place and it is somewhat restricted. You can't browse the wind instruments really because they're in a closed off area. (Did I mention the brass instruments? They're amazing absolutely beautiful). It's an odd place, and maybe not the most welcoming, but to me I love the oddity. You'd be hard pressed to find any store any where like this one.

Square Dog claims to be the only store of their kind in a pretty large radius. I have no way of…read moreconfirming that, but do they live up to the massive expectations set by said claim? Mostly. Man, this place seems to have only had one guy working there for years. He's the owner, I believe. It's truly shocking how kind, patient and helpful he is. He's also knowledgeable on most things. I have never found anything I wanna buy here. Five years ago, their movie selection felt about standard. Now, their focus is instead music or books, unfortunately. I'm not a consumer of physical books or music. I hear it's at minimum, an acceptable selection. I can't precisely gauge the value for a few reasons. There aren't many physical media stores in general anymore, plus this guy is very particular about having an extremely high quality of used products he sells. To me, the prices seemed a bit high, but I guess I'm glad he wants to only sell used products that seem new. (Does he sell non used products?) It's an easy building to access, with a huge parking lot. That however, doesn't entirely make up for being closed on a weekend day (Sunday). It being a reasonably big store, COMBINED with the former, does make up for it. It felt like it was very clean on the inside, to a fault...he still has a clear glass panel in front of him at the cash register, and wears a pretty intense face mask with gloves. I'm not going to get personal, don't worry. I'm only mentioning this, because it seriously made him hard to hear when he spoke. So keep that in mind. He had plenty of customers on a Wednesday afternoon before a holiday. Clearly there's something I'm missing here. I've only been here a couple times in five years, so maybe if you're a regular customer, the experience is different and better. There's a few reviews on Google at least, of customers recounting their purchase experiences, that can be very enlightening. Overall, this store seems to have one employee, the owner. A man who provides good customer service, and is concerned about having a pristine store in more ways than one. I'm not sure how many customers he has, but he is still open, so maybe go check him out.

Also, he had two birds in different cages both covered up. I felt bad for them as I could see that was their entire life. Bad vibes from this store.

What an interesting find!…read more First off I love finding record stores to rummage through when I'm traveling but this place goes above and beyond that. Truly, I have never seen such a wide collection of DVDs, cassettes, CDs, and vinyl. Another alarming thing is how many of these items, such as the cassettes, are in the original wrapper! It was like a museum to the past, and I mean that in the best ways possible. It reminded me of the 90s being at the local record store combing the aisles for something that peaked my interest. This place is decorated with lots of plants, musical instruments and cats. Yes, cats. Apparently proceeds of this place help our furry friends and the cats often end up here as a second-chance shelter, so how do you not love that? The guy working there wasn't the friendliest at first, but once I started asking questions and buying things, he lightened up. I'm not sure if he thought I was just wasting his time at first or not. I'm sure a lot of people come here just to look. This place is a gold mine for anyone who loves music.

Barter for a great deal. Think of this place as a type of pawn shop as far as what they carry. They will buy used gear from you or trade. Pretty kick back attitude and funny signs all around the store. Damn big place too, so spend some time, and look around, move some boxes, look behind things, etc. Lot's of hidden treasures abound of things that you may or may not need. One thing that I noticed is the guy that works there can be left to man the fort by himself and it seems that all hell breaks loose when this happens (phones ring off the hook, customers come in with all sorts of questions, etc.). He handles the rush really well, so try to cut him some slack if he is busy. I see so many rude clerks and staff at places that are snotty for no reason at all, so when I see this guy busting his back and keeping his cool, he deserves some common courtesy. This is a cool, local shop that gives Astoria some quirky character that keeps us as weird as Portland will ever be, without as many Portlandia Freaks and Geeks to annoy us here on our mossy coast. The Martin Jr in stock was hanging with the other guitars was ready to play & she set me up to try it out. They had a good selection Martin accessories including a good assortment of guitar strings including the Martin brand so I also bought a spare set of the Martin LifeSpan Phosphor Bronze Light strings. I was short on time so did not get a chance to fully take in the ambience & experience of Dan & Sara's music store, but reading up on Crossroads before hand on their website & stepping into their store, I felt the warm embrace of some good vibes, and appreciate their community involvement in local music events in this very charming waterfront town. I like contributing to local businesses so I not only walked away with a very nice Martin acoustic electric guitar, it felt rewarding to give back.
