What an interesting find!…read more First off I love finding record stores to rummage through when I'm traveling but this place goes above and beyond that. Truly, I have never seen such a wide collection of DVDs, cassettes, CDs, and vinyl. Another alarming thing is how many of these items, such as the cassettes, are in the original wrapper! It was like a museum to the past, and I mean that in the best ways possible. It reminded me of the 90s being at the local record store combing the aisles for something that peaked my interest. This place is decorated with lots of plants, musical instruments and cats. Yes, cats. Apparently proceeds of this place help our furry friends and the cats often end up here as a second-chance shelter, so how do you not love that? The guy working there wasn't the friendliest at first, but once I started asking questions and buying things, he lightened up. I'm not sure if he thought I was just wasting his time at first or not. I'm sure a lot of people come here just to look. This place is a gold mine for anyone who loves music.

Also, he had two birds in different cages both covered up. I felt bad for them as I could see that was their entire life. I asked him what their names were even though I couldn't see them only hear them, and he acted so weird about it. So sad the keep an animal in a cage, let alone a bird. Covered up in the darkness. Bad vibes from this store.

Square Dog claims to be the only store of their kind in a pretty large radius. I have no way of…read moreconfirming that, but do they live up to the massive expectations set by said claim? Mostly. Man, this place seems to have only had one guy working there for years. He's the owner, I believe. It's truly shocking how kind, patient and helpful he is. He's also knowledgeable on most things. I have never found anything I wanna buy here. Five years ago, their movie selection felt about standard. Now, their focus is instead music or books, unfortunately. I'm not a consumer of physical books or music. I hear it's at minimum, an acceptable selection. I can't precisely gauge the value for a few reasons. There aren't many physical media stores in general anymore, plus this guy is very particular about having an extremely high quality of used products he sells. To me, the prices seemed a bit high, but I guess I'm glad he wants to only sell used products that seem new. (Does he sell non used products?) It's an easy building to access, with a huge parking lot. That however, doesn't entirely make up for being closed on a weekend day (Sunday). It being a reasonably big store, COMBINED with the former, does make up for it. It felt like it was very clean on the inside, to a fault...he still has a clear glass panel in front of him at the cash register, and wears a pretty intense face mask with gloves. I'm not going to get personal, don't worry. I'm only mentioning this, because it seriously made him hard to hear when he spoke. So keep that in mind. He had plenty of customers on a Wednesday afternoon before a holiday. Clearly there's something I'm missing here. I've only been here a couple times in five years, so maybe if you're a regular customer, the experience is different and better. There's a few reviews on Google at least, of customers recounting their purchase experiences, that can be very enlightening. Overall, this store seems to have one employee, the owner. A man who provides good customer service, and is concerned about having a pristine store in more ways than one. I'm not sure how many customers he has, but he is still open, so maybe go check him out.

And then when I asked if they had one of their souvenir T shirts in my size she visibly sighed a frustrated exhale. She doesn't seem suited for a customer facing career. Worth it to get books here but try to keep best to avoid trying to interact with the person behind the counter. Hopefully the rest of their staff is competent at bare minimum having a decent attitude when customers walk in. Pretty remarkably off putting vibes. Sad.

Definitely we preferred Godfather's Books & Espresso than another indie bookstore we had visited…read morethe day before (6/20/25). Disregard the brief Yelp description, this indie bookstore has a vast selection of titles organized by subject/genre (a potential treasure trove) and a variety of merch. The Homie honed in on three books reflecting his interests in military aviation, history, and Chinese cooking. The latter was a great vintage Time Life collection title. I seem to continue my streak of locating unique or sought out titles while on holiday. Last summer it was a French cookbook in Newport, OR. Here in Godfather's cookbook room, I found The Slanted Door. The James Beard winning author/chef had passed away earlier this year and I never received my copy from a TX bookseller via a distributor. Godfather's has that signature indie bookstore vibe, great titles to pore over, and really nice staff who treat both regulars and visitors with genuine warmth. A worthy detour while in Astoria!
