Bach to Rock record store and the most extraordinary dust collection on the North Coast
    Lucky J.

Visiting this place the once and only time we ever shall was an unpleasant experience for about 8 or 9 different reasons. The CDs, which are kept in locked display racks where the customer must request assistance from the smiling, happy customer service expert (oh wait! I was wrong, he's an extremely surly and unhelpful worker who acts as though potential customers browsing the establishment's wares are like maggots in his sandwich) to open the rack with a key so that the disc may be examined, are priced at about 1994 prices ($17.99, $15.99, and so forth), in spite of this format's obsolescence and undesirability. I mean, maybe if the discs were priced at $2 or $3, there might possibly be something worth gambling on. But if it's going to take wading through a dusty, poorly unorganized, unfriendly-staffed wasteland. Oh, the records for sale appear to be rather stinking and definitely priced as though they're all in mint condition and also (and this is where it all breaks down) actually desirable.

This place is what I'm now calling a Zoo forest. Plants floor to ceiling all the way around the room. At least 4 dogs, one of which looked like it was about to die. The "guy" picked it up and carried it to the other side of the store which had an indoor bathroom area for the animals. Which totally grosses me out. Did I mention they sell coffee and tea?? Yuck! I don't know how the health department allows that. Did I mention the cats?!? Saw at least 3 or 4 of those. One of which was hiss-hacking at me. The whole place smelled like a litter box, until you get to the in-scent section, which is strangely large considering there in-scent's. The whole reason I went to this store was because my husband is an avid record collector and he wanted to check out the cheap vinyl. He did indeed score some cheap records but you have to be willing to wade threw the zoo forest.

I met an awesome lady pup while picking incense and browsing music and pipes. Fantastic.

I mostly use Yelp to write 4-5 star reviews, so I sometimes wonder if my good reviews come across as easily earned. I assure you, they are not. I'm pretty much just as picky as any other white privileged PacNorthwesterner, so I expect great things from small businesses. Honestly, I write reviews for the amazing places that make a positive impact on my life, on others' lives, and on the surrounding community in general. Bach & Rock makes the cut. As I'm sure many of you have done/are doing, Astoria's a wonderful place to escape Portland and explore. Aside from all of the great Goonies gems to be found, the neighborhoods are filled with beautiful and old houses, winding roads with gigantic trees, delicious seafood and beer, and this place. I've never been anywhere like it. I knew from the outside I wanted to go in, but it was still unassuming enough that I could have easily walked right by it without a flinch. I'm glad the rain coaxed me in. Bach & Rock is the following rolled into one (which still blows my mind): -Music store with CDs, vinyls, and cassette tapes -Video rentals of DVDs and yes, VHS -Coffee shop -Head shop (pipes and a large array of incense) -Gift shop (vintage items of all kinds, antiques, bird cages, plants, you name it) -Animal rescue You walk in to a happy family of unlikely friends, and you find yourself not wanting to leave. An arrogant, fat black cat was totally comfortable hanging with a happy German shepherd, annoying chihuahua mix, adorable basset hound, even more adorable Australian shepherd, and a crazy hyper greyhound mix.. and those are only the animals I saw. I'm sure you didn't know before that every music store, coffee shop and head shop you've been frequenting was missing an array of rescue animals, but now you do. Go to there.

Also, he had two birds in different cages both covered up. I felt bad for them as I could see that was their entire life. I asked him what their names were even though I couldn't see them only hear them, and he acted so weird about it. So sad the keep an animal in a cage, let alone a bird. Covered up in the darkness. Bad vibes from this store.

Truly, I have never seen such a wide collection of DVDs, cassettes, CDs, and vinyl. Another alarming thing is how many of these items, such as the cassettes, are in the original wrapper! It was like a museum to the past, and I mean that in the best ways possible. It reminded me of the 90s being at the local record store combing the aisles for something that peaked my interest. This place is decorated with lots of plants, musical instruments and cats. Yes, cats. Apparently proceeds of this place help our furry friends and the cats often end up here as a second-chance shelter, so how do you not love that? The guy working there wasn't the friendliest at first, but once I started asking questions and buying things, he lightened up. I'm not sure if he thought I was just wasting his time at first or not. I'm sure a lot of people come here just to look. This place is a gold mine for anyone who loves music.

Barter for a great deal. Think of this place as a type of pawn shop as far as what they carry. They will buy used gear from you or trade. Pretty kick back attitude and funny signs all around the store. Damn big place too, so spend some time, and look around, move some boxes, look behind things, etc. Lot's of hidden treasures abound of things that you may or may not need. One thing that I noticed is the guy that works there can be left to man the fort by himself and it seems that all hell breaks loose when this happens (phones ring off the hook, customers come in with all sorts of questions, etc.). He handles the rush really well, so try to cut him some slack if he is busy. I see so many rude clerks and staff at places that are snotty for no reason at all, so when I see this guy busting his back and keeping his cool, he deserves some common courtesy. This is a cool, local shop that gives Astoria some quirky character that keeps us as weird as Portland will ever be, without as many Portlandia Freaks and Geeks to annoy us here on our mossy coast. Mostly. Man, this place seems to have only had one guy working there for years. He's the owner, I believe. It's truly shocking how kind, patient and helpful he is. He's also knowledgeable on most things. I have never found anything I wanna buy here. Five years ago, their movie selection felt about standard. Now, their focus is instead music or books, unfortunately. I'm not a consumer of physical books or music. I hear it's at minimum, an acceptable selection. I can't precisely gauge the value for a few reasons. There aren't many physical media stores in general anymore, plus this guy is very particular about having an extremely high quality of used products he sells. To me, the prices seemed a bit high, but I guess I'm glad he wants to only sell used products that seem new. (Does he sell non used products?) It's an easy building to access, with a huge parking lot. That however, doesn't entirely make up for being closed on a weekend day (Sunday). It being a reasonably big store, COMBINED with the former, does make up for it. It felt like it was very clean on the inside, to a fault...he still has a clear glass panel in front of him at the cash register, and wears a pretty intense face mask with gloves. I'm not going to get personal, don't worry. I'm only mentioning this, because it seriously made him hard to hear when he spoke. So keep that in mind. He had plenty of customers on a Wednesday afternoon before a holiday. Clearly there's something I'm missing here. I've only been here a couple times in five years, so maybe if you're a regular customer, the experience is different and better. There's a few reviews on Google at least, of customers recounting their purchase experiences, that can be very enlightening. Overall, this store seems to have one employee, the owner. A man who provides good customer service, and is concerned about having a pristine store in more ways than one. I'm not sure how many customers he has, but he is still open, so maybe go check him out.
