It's amazing how much stuff they have in this relatively small space. It can't compare with a large store like Silver Platters, but it's a cool place to shop. Good selection of low priced used cd's, fair selection of used vinyl. If you have the time, it's worth digging through the boxes of used 45's. Lots of new vinyl which is IMO overpriced, but that is not the fault of this store - it's that way everywhere. Also a decent selection of music videos, cassettes, even 8 tracks. read more

I was browsing discogs and saw the record i was about to buy was from this store. I woke up early the next morning to call them and ask if they had the record i wanted in the store. Record stores remind me of my youth. Especially going to a record store in a small town. The difference here is that Olympia has been a musical mecca since the nineties. It has cranked out some amazing tunes and bands from K records personal favorite the Gossip to dark metal Wolves in the Throneroom. And recently a new addiction, the band "Xylitol"!!! I saw them in Brooklyn and was blown away. How could I resist not coming to Rainy Day Records and picking up some 7 inches "demo" and "Is toxic to pigs" ! It's always been this bubble of creativity and it continues to do so. The record store even was stocked with 7 inches of NY favorites like Nandas and Warthog! I could have easily stoked up on tonsss of vinyl. They have a great curated selection. They not only sell records but also cd's, tapes and I believe I even saw some VHS. That's right you heard me correctly. The oldies and goodies are alive and well in Oly. And I highly encourage making the day trip or overnight trip if you are visiting Seattle. As an avid record collector I've frequented many record stores. Every time I visit Rainy Day I have a hard time finding what I'm looking for. Rather than organizing records by a few genres and then alphabetically, records are organized by record label? I'm pretty sure every time I've been in there looking for something I've had to ask if they have it due to uncertainty on where to find it. For example; the band Saves The Day has been on 5+ different record labels, some of them have been independent, some of them major label. Where do I find Saves The Day? Are their indie records in the indie section and the major label records in the major label section? I don't know? Guess I'll ask for help. read more

I love this store! It is fun and quirky and covers just about everything I could desire! The music selection is decent but not as broad as I might hope but the store significantly makes up for that in other ways. In one corner of the store they rent out movies. The area is small but the selection is significant and diverse to say the least. They also sell movies as well in other parts of the store but they are not quite as interesting as that rental section. I felt like a kid in a candy store there. They also have an impressive selection of pins with all kinds of designs up by the front counter. The pin that caught my attention was one of David Lynch. I actually bought some merchandise here too! Another fun and quirky section is their postcard section which is located at the front of the store. I got postcards of pictures from very obscure movies like" Scorpio Rising" and a Billy the Kid movie where he confronts Dracula. How can you not love that? I am looking forward to coming back here and though I am not wild about the music selection (I will give credit where credit is due, the selection is interesting just kind of small) the rest of the merchandise more than makes up for a cool shopping experience here. read more

Even vinyl - but please stop with making up the usage. You got to give them props for trying. You can't please everyone but you should know before you visit this place that it appeals to the hipster/scenester and the greener crowd. So you have extra emphasis on Bob Marley and Reggae (although little in the way of the "dub" sub-genre) and extra emphasis on bands that play four chords, have super-whining-monochromatic vocalists, and have records that were recorded within the last few years, that sound like they were assembled in a garage and recorded on a ghettoblaster placed across the street. In other words, music for kids in Olympia and all over the Northwest who are trying to relive the 1960s garage band days -but who also lack the musical talent to make their endeavors worthwhile. They have some cool movies for rent here. Definitely interesting selection with some foreign films that are hard to find. The used rack sometimes has some good stuff on it. Whoever stocks the hip-hop selection has amusing taste. It's the kind of stuff that hippies think qualifies as good hip-hop i.e. "socially conscious" music. I don't care what the guy or girls philosophy is, I care whether it sounds good or not. Little in the way of interesting Latin music. The Jazz section leaves a lot to be desired as well. They do have their own heavy metal section which is sub-divided extensively. Selection usually isn't that good but I do remember getting one or two brand new albums for a certain band when they had a product to speak of. read more

After coming to the fact that all the places I use to buy my music have gone out of business and that maybe I should start downloading music like the "WHOLE REST OF THE WORLD!" I contemplated and have yet to do so. There is something I love about CD's. The whole process of it. Even the struggle when I get to the car to find a way to get the plastic peeled off just enough to remove it. Then the perfectly placed tape that never comes off in one piece and I end up just prying the case open hoping I don"t break the CD inside. Yes I'm inside! Now what does the disc look like? COOL! Oh man there is even a little book inside too! COOL! Now adjust the seat and volume and I am chillin! This I know I can't get from a download! This is a great shop. Tons of music and selection. They have all formats as well. Tons of indie music. There is a lot of electronic indie music I'm not familiar with here. Prices are what you would expect. Only a dollar or two over online pricing, but that trumps the shipping costs. They have a free record section outside the building to help "inspire creativity". I thought this was a great idea because everyone loves free stuff (free records!?). Straight to the heart. :) I picked up Chopin and Beethoven for free. Highly impressed with two young guys working there, I hated that I didn't get there sooner that day and went through their vinyls and although it was closing time they waited patiently until a minute or two before 8 and reminded me so tactfully I thought it was so cool. I couldn't believe some of the LPs I found in their $.98 bin or a dollar bin (falco, the rose,...). Store is somewhat small in size but they stock so many good stuff I was more than happy to drive all the way up there. Helpful note, try to get there early because you may end up spending much longer time there because many Vietnamese restaurants in the nearby area all closes at 8!!! Rainy Day Records is one of the businesses I love most in Olympia. Today just reinforced my appreciation for them. After a long and frustrating ordeal regarding a record that was incompatible with my turntable, they were super friendly and understanding after I returned one copy, and then the next once I realized the issue. While I was saddened to not add the album to my collection, they made the process of returns less of a hassle and even recommended a few good options for upgrading my hardware. As a teenager getting into vinyl collection, I couldn't have asked for a better local shop to fuel my hobby. This is one of my favorite record stores. The selection is vast, the atmosphere is chill (I never feel rushed when I peruse) and the taste and knowledge of the owner and employees is intriguing. As well as music, the shop also does videos, clothing, music merch and even has a small skate shop. A store as counter-culture as the town to which it belongs. *I have to say that one of my favorite things about this place is the little toy box they keep in the corner for your kids while you do your thing. A bit of background: I'm a guy who has Spotify Premium but still buys physical copies because I love seeing a case on my shelf that I know has my favorite album in it. Today, I bought a pin and a used copy of Bob Marley And The Wailer's Uprising. In the past, I have purchased Vessel and Blurryface by Twenty One Pilots, the 10th anniversary edition of Nas' Illmatic album and many, many more that I just simply cannot remember right now. Their selection is very nice. For CDs, they have many sections, including Electronic, Discount, Reggae, Rock, New Arrivals, etc. For casettes, well, they're just on a wall from what I've noticed. Vinyls are in many shelves and are most of the store. Great selection. They also carry 45 vinyls, which surprised me a little bit. I've been coming here for a very long time and the people who work here are always very nice and never hesitate to play music for you. Today I listened to Tacocat's Lost Time album. Decent album. The store is amazingly clean and it always has this weird store that I can only describe as Rainy Day Smell. In a good way. Definetely come here if you love music! I have been coming to Rainy Day Records since we moved to Oly in 1979. Back then it was AC/DC imports and Alva skateboards. This is a laid back kinda place with one of the last movie rental collections in Oly, an ever changing assortment of vintage stereo equipment and skateboards. But best of al they have vinyl. Blues, Jazz, Punk, Heavy Metal, Classic Rock, Pop, Reggae.... They have a great selection of unusual LPs and some great box sets. read more

An unsatisfying used selection and painfully-hip inventory, featuring the best of retro-ironic-classics and modern indie/emo/hipster chic. Which makes sense for Olympia's Greener crowd, but is really rather unsatisfying for the rest of us. In part because there's nothing of interest in the small selection and we don't really want to be sad about not ironically-liking Joanna Newsom (and I really do hope that there is no earnest enjoyment of her shrill, banal music.) The move downtown only makes this more unpleasant, with potential shoppers penned in by the Quality Burrito NKVD and scorned at ironic eateries like the Creperie. read more
