My lychee martini was perfection, my husband loved his Japanese whisky, and our friends were obsessed with their sake mixed drinks. The waiter and chef were incredibly supportive and reassuring with what gluten-free options were available. Everything one I can be made gluten free besides noodles and tempura. This really made ordering a breeze. For food, I had the sashimi bento box and shared a speciality roll with my husband; literally the freshest and most flavorful sushi I have ever had. They also provided gluten free soy sauce as well! My husband had spicy ramen, which was a generous portion size and he reported it was fantastic. Everyone absolutely loved their food and this place has now become our go to sushi and ramen spot; a little something for everyone. First time eating at Starfish sushi. It was so packed (which is a good sign!) But we went on a Saturday night at 7pm so it was prime time. Our waitress was super nice and the food was quick despite how busy it was. I had one of their bento boxes with sashimi and sushi. The sashimi was top notch and not fishy AT ALL. Delicious! My husband had a few rolls like ocean drive and salmon sunshine which reminded us of Blufish. The overall ambiance is good, they have a large bar as well with a ton of spirits. I want to highlight the Salmon Poke Bowl. I cannot say enough good things about the quality, flavor and presentation. The bowl was filled with robust leafy mixed greens, edamame, avocado. I was very happy with the mixed greens ratio to the rice. The rice was about a fist size amount, just the right amount so that I didn't feel like I was eating solely bowl of rice. There were several pieces of fish - considerable,thick, and fresh. The potato crisps give it a nice crunchy texture to contrast the pieces of salmon. I absolutely loved it. The service was friendly. I always expect long waits for dishes to be prepared. During busy, peak hours, there were a few Sushi Chefs, but it was still quite a wait. But the quality of the Poke Bowl was certainly worth the wait! read more

Oh man, this is the kind of place that makes it hard to write a review because of Yelp's star system. Starfish is like... a 4.5 stars. First, the restaurant is nicely sized, anchoring a plaza. The inside is nice and has a mix of Asian touches (like different regions). The music is a touch on the louder side, but not impossible. It contributes to a more casual vibe. The menu is fairly sized as well. It has a combination of Japanese cuisines, sushi, and more and more Korean influences. There is a big variety of fishes on the sushi, which is confident! The service is attentive, but on my second trip, it felt really rushed. Like hovering. The management also seemed to be floating around the dining room, which is always nice to see. The sushi is well-prepared and wonderfully presented! The dry ice never stops flowing! Do you like truffle oil? Cause they got it! They also present a complimentary hors d'oeuvre of a single "perfect" bite. We had various sushi, nigiri, and I even had the ramen - which was a super generous portion. All very nice. Prices are average, but the presentation is priceless. I think the ambiance is a little mixed - it somewhere between classy and casual (there was a "Happy Birthday" song by the staff during one of my trips). I came here on a Yelp-search whim, and was highly satisfied with this place. Apparently I've driven past this place several times, but it's somewhat tucked-in the corner of the strip mall, so IMHO, easy to miss. That being said, what a hidden gem! I enjoyed the chicken bento box quite a lot. t came with unique tempura such as sweet potato, asparagus. The salad was good, and so was the chicken. The only small gripe was that at $25, this was on-par with usually more expensive bento boxes like the sushi & sashimi bento box. The deep fried soft shell crab was a great appetizer. Our experience started out rocky... we had a 7pm reservation on a Friday night. We were seated right away and then..... sat for 25-30 minutes and no one came to our table, except a guy with two glasses of water. We sat there looking at every passing server, but no one stopped at our table. We contemplated walking out and going somewhere else, but we had our hearts set on sushi, so I went up to the front podium and alerted them to the issue and then everything was great from there. For some, that might have completely ruined the experience, but I know that people have their days and since the nice waitress who I informed of the issue personally took care of us, she was extremely apologetic and attentive. So we moved on. The sushi was SO GOOD. They had so many interesting roll options with unique flavor combinations that it was hard to not be happy with the meal once we finally were served. We started with the Spicy Edamame which was basically edamame covered in sweet chili sauce. It was good, but a bit messy. I love edamame, but I'm not sure I'd order the spicy version again. I don't think the chili sauce added anything for me. Next, they provided a complimentary crab salad on a crispy wonton. This was incredible. I wish I actually knew what it was and if I could order more. For sushi, we ordered the Crispy Tuna Rice, Godzilla, Mango Madness, Blue Fin Toro, and Kamikaze. It was way too much for two people, but we tried our hardest. Every roll was so delicious and fresh. The rice was cooked to the perfect tenderness (not too soggy). I started with the spicy edamame which is coated with what tasted like a gochujang sauce. For my entree I ordered the spicy miso ramen which comes with pork, a jammy egg and some fish cakes. The noodles were cooked well and had a nice chew. The broth was definitely on the milder side and I wish it had more of an umami flavor to it. This sushi place is my current guilty pleasure. It's about 5 minutes away from my place of work and we've had two team meals here in the past few weeks. We were greeted with kind employees and there was plenty of space for our 6-person team. We also had an early dinner, so there weren't a lot of guests yet. Most of the team got sushi and everyone loved it. Take a look at the pictures below and I apologize if I messed up some of the roll names. The first time here, I got the spicy miso ramen, which was savory, spicy and delicious. I would get it again. The second time I got a spicy sushi combo, which consisted of spicy tuna, spicy shrimp, and an inferno roll. Overall, I'm happy with the quality of the food, the flavors, and the value for the price. I came here on a Wednesday night before seeing a show at the Marriott Theater. I made reservations online so we were seated promptly as we got inside the place. I liked that the parking was easy since it was in a strip mall. The interior was neat and nice. It took awhile for someone to attend to our table, I had to get the attention of the hostess in order to at least get some menus. It took quite awhile again to put our orders in, and I mentioned to the server that we had to make it on time for a show. We ordered: EDAMAME, SPICY CRUNCH CRAB, and the 911 rolls. The rolls were ok, I was a tad disappointed that the sauce drizzled on top of the 911 roll was just a bottled hot sauce. The service was slow, I'll be honest. The place was not full when we got here. Our server gave me the wrong type of wine, twice. The bartender noticed that our server would just grab a glass of wine that he would pour, without checking which customer it was for. He served my glass of wine himself, to make sure that I got the right one. Overall, it was not a bad place to get sushi in the area. Went for Mother's Day and they decorated each table with flowers and a Mother's Day balloon. Ordered multiple rolls the sexy lady, crazy dragon and rainbow. Ratio of fish to rice was plentiful, fish was quite fresh and all the sauces and toppings were complimentary to the fish and not overpowering. Portion sizes were quite good as well. Price was what you would expect for quality fish. The star was the blue fin torro. The torro was buttery and melt in your mouth. The truffle oil added a nice umami flavor really raising the flavor of the tuna. There was also a nice hint of salt which punctuated the flavor. I will order this every time and not get tired of it. Ordered the don katsu for the kids and sadly it was very underwhelming. The breading was very very thin so there was not much of a crunch that you crave with don katsu. The pork was also very very dry. The sushi is definitely the star here and you won't be disappointed. Good quality sushi and ambiance. Will be back soon. read more

Two of us started off with Starfish Greens. I had no idea how big these salads are, so one could have fed the four of us as an appetizer. One in our party could not have shellfish. We decided to order something each and share them all. Two of us started off with something not on the menu. Salmon with caviar and quail egg, which was amazing. We also got Bulgoki Taco, which is Soft shell taco with marinated sliced rib eye, lettuce, cheese & guacamole. We then ordered rolls: Dragon Fire, Rainbow Roll, Crazy Dragon (did have shellfish so we kept that separate from the other rolls), Salmon Avacodo and Crispy Rice Spicy Tuna. The place was not busy at the time we went on Friday night but had started filling up by the time we left. The service was quick and efficient. Started the night with their soup and salad. The salad was amazing. I'm not one to usually rant about a salad but from the first bite the blend of flavors, I just couldn't stop. I thought this place was going to be overpriced but for the quality and quantity of the food it matches up. The portions they were bringing out were huge. We even got to start with a crab nacho chip appetizer (I can't remember the name) but that was a beautiful blend of textures and taste. I ordered the chicken katsu and spicy tuna crunchy rice roll. The chicken katsu was nicely crispy and the tangy sauce paired well with it. I enjoyed my sushi roll also. The tuna tasted fresh and the Wasabi on top was just enough. As someone who is a big fan of the delicious food offered by the Shakou restaurants in the area, I was pleasantly surprised by my experience at Starfish Sushi which has many similar characteristics which make it an excellent choice to dine at. Starfish Sushi mirrors the fine decor, excellent service, large menu, and reasonable prices that make this a great place to take friends and family. The enormous portions, flavorful combinations, and excellent presentation are a huge plus in addition to its proximity to the Marriott Theatre! Even close to show time, it shouldn't be too difficult to find a table, which is a concern for those who are dining right before show time. The food here is definitely one of the strong points. With colorful plating and food elements, this is definitely video and photo worthy regardless of what you order. Fortunately, the food is just as strong in terms of well balanced and bold flavor combinations as well as lots of varieties of textures throughout. The house salad is a nice improvement over the standard offer with some crispy noodles on top to add some extra flavor and crunch while I enjoyed a slice of fresh citrus fruit inside as well. The shoyu ramen is full of tender chashu with lightly firm noodles and a slightly sweet shoyu broth. The salmon poke bowl has a delightful mix of different colors, flavors, and textures that make it a delight to eat without being overly saucy. This is a testament to the quality of fish and vegetables to present it in this way to highlight the freshness. The bulgoki entree was pretty good with lots of flavorful beef, though not as impressive as the other items I tried. The crispy rice spicy tuna was constructed in an orderly manner with clear contrast between the different elements and a good level of umami. The chicken katsu was enormous with a ton of meat in a nice thin and crispy batter and an addictive tangy sauce. The sushi and maki bento box provided a nice array of different options that was presented nicely. The slices of fish were nice and thick with a good freshness and not too much rice. [Although it started out rocky - they were a few minutes late opening for our 4pm dinner reservation - but they apologized profusely]. Our usual sushi restaurant is closer to home [Sushi Thaime in Oak Lawn, IL] - but I wanted a change of pace this Valentine's Day so we picked Starfish Sushi... The restaurant was very festive - decorated in heart balloons everywhere. Our Starfish Sushi food was great, generous portions - we took home leftovers. my chocolate martinis were great. our server ANU was great - super attentive, super friendly. Mark, the bartender, was great - he made a custom chocolate martini for me! After their complimentary starter, we ordered: Appetizers: Pork Gyoza, Ika Karage [Fried squid rings and tentacles]? Sashimi - 1 mackerel, 2 unagi, 2 scallops, and Nigiri - 1 ikura. Entrees: Don Chicken katsu, Maki - Salmon Obsession & Black Dragon. Drinks: Almond Chocolate martini and Strawberry White chocolate almond martini. The bartender also brought us another complimentary dish for 2 that they were testing. It was tasty - and I suggested less or no salt. My only suggestion, that would make the Starfish Sushi dining experience PERFECT i.e. more authentic, is to play Japanese instrumental music - instead of contemporary songs. The presentation of each dish was beautiful, and I especially loved the decorative dry ice accompanying most dishes! I ordered the king veggie maki and a hot stone rice bowl with veggies and tofu. Our server brought the table soup and salad. We also ordered a creamy crab nacho (not the actual name) appetizer. This was amazing. There were many flavors playing with each other and they played well together. At first, I thought that the prices were high, but when I saw the amount of food that was brought out, I can see why the prices are high. The portions are huge. The fish is my poke bowl was fresh, and there was a lot of it. We had planned on ordering dessert but we ran out of time since we had to get to our show. Oh my gosh I love this place so much! The first time I dined here, I was about 6 months pregnant so I didn't get to try any of their delicious cocktails, but I did enjoy their awesome veggie rolls and tofu salad. I have since been here to dine for lunch or dinner two other occasions and have been equally impressed both times. Their cocktails are super yummy and the veggie combo's presentation is absolutely stunning. The food is a bit pricy, but I honestly think it's worth the price as everything has always tasted fresh and as I said, the presentation is amazing. We were not lucky enough to try menu off omakase which the waitress recommended for us. It was nothing special comparing to regular menu, rolls are not creative nothing surprised me. The deepfrying vegetable was not crispy and sogged. Main course sushi came with big boat decorating with whole fish bone(using after sashimi) with head.It looked like keep using it. smells was disgusting and just a few pieces of sashimi provided. The udon was so salty, water taste, water and soy sauce base we couldn't eat it. all for $50 per person! We were very disappointed with this place since we've read good review about this place. Service was excellent too. They were happy to answer our questions and share recommendations since it was me and my parties first time there. I think this restaurant is special for their sashimi/nigiri. It was the most delicious I think I have ever had considering we live in IL! I'm sure there are places along the coasts that couldn't compare, but we are here and that's what matters, haha! Solid sushi! We came here for lunch with a couple colleagues and it was a really great selection from the lunch menu. The sashimi was outstanding and the udon was also rock solid on a cold day. I knocked a star off because one of my colleagues ordered the sashimi dinner and you'd think the server would have mentioned the only difference is you get a soup and a salad instead of the lunch special getting soup or salad. The price was quite literally 50% more for the same thing. I appreciate transparency and they clearly were looking to run up the bill. Either way lesson learned and it's a good spot! read more
