I'm writing this with equal parts heartbreak and caffeine withdrawal…read more I've been a devoted Peet's customer since my freshman year in Berkeley--back when discovering your deep, dark roast felt like being let in on a delicious secret. From that very first cup, I was hooked. Bold, rich, unapologetically intense--everything coffee should be. Frankly, Starbucks could NEVER compete, and I wore that opinion like a badge of honor for nearly 40 years. Over those decades, Peet's wasn't just my coffee--it was part of my routine, my work life in San Francisco, and even my social fabric. I brought Peet's into corporate meetings, events, and countless mornings that required both caffeine and hope. The consistency was unmatched, and the people--your people--were just as special. Longtime staff who remembered names, orders, and somehow made a coffee chain feel like a neighborhood staple. Then life took me north to the Pacific Northwest--specifically Oregon and Washington--where, let's be honest, "medium roast" reigns supreme (a phrase that still confuses me spiritually). Finding Peet's locations here felt like spotting an old friend in a crowd. And at first, it was! The quality, the AMAZING staff, the experience--it all held up. But lately... what happened? Somewhere along the line--perhaps around the time of the Keurig Dr Pepper acquisition--things changed. And not in a "new seasonal menu" kind of way. The coffee doesn't hit the same. The magic feels diluted. Even the staff, once the soul of the brand, seem less engaged--like they, too, are wondering where the old Peet's went. I feel for my friends!!! It pains me to say this, but the experience now feels... ordinary. And Peet's was never supposed to be ordinary. I can't help but imagine Alfred Peet looking down and thinking, "This is not what I had in mind." So here I am, a customer of nearly four decades, asking--no, begging--you to remember what made Peet's special. The commitment to quality. The restraint in growth. The PRIDE in the product. The people. Because right now, I'm doing something I never thought I would: exploring other options. And while nothing quite replaces what Peet's used to be, some are getting dangerously close.

Had to drop off some family at the Portland airport so naturally we stopped in Vancouver to hangout…read morea bit before, my sister in law loves coffee and found this place online and noted they had a lot of speciality drinks so we had to give it a try! We didn't expect a small drive up coffee hut but we are still glad we tried it! My father in law got a white coffee speciality drink and my sis the same but with regular coffee, and I got a matcha! They were all so flavorful and yummy! But what really stood out was the service, she was so kind answering questions giving recs and offering chocolate espresso beans on our coffees. Such a sweetheart! We'd go back again :)

I was hoping Vancouver would be in the same category, but unfortunately, this experience was a major letdown. The woman who greeted us was very friendly, and I genuinely appreciated that. However, despite taking our order on a device, she asked us multiple times to confirm our drink sizes, whether they were hot or cold, etc. Then, a second employee came out and asked us if we wanted straws... something we had literally been asked about maybe two minutes earlier. Normally, I'm extremely understanding when a business is busy and orders get mixed up. But we were the only car there. There was no one in front of us or behind us, so I'm not really sure how our order was still getting confused after being confirmed so many times and entered into a device. And somehow, the drink sizes were STILL wrong. The matcha was the biggest disappointment. I could immediately tell by the color that something was off. It was this cloudy, grayish-turquoise color, and unfortunately, it tasted about as bad as it looked. The breakfast sandwich was also disappointing because it was essentially a Jimmy Dean sandwich. I hate giving a local business one star because I know how much that can hurt, and I really wanted to like this place. But between the repeated confusion over a very simple order, the incorrect drink sizes, the poor matcha, and the disappointing breakfast sandwich, I just can't justify giving more.

I knew that I would want to review Black Rock even before we ordered because of how extraordinarily friendly and inviting the staff was. None of the interactions felt fake. We felt welcomed and appreciated right out of the gates. We opted to try their coffee as well as some of their food. Fortunately for us they have a breakfast anytime menu. Let's start with the food. My wife had egg white, ham and gruyere egg bites while I simply could not turn away from the grilled cheese sandwich. It sounded really good and the barista said it was a fan favorite. Let me just say the egg bites were perfect. Not rubbery, but full of flavor and just the right size. I would put them up against egg bites at any restaurant. As for the grilled cheese, it was on sourdough and toasted perfectly. Every bite was crunchy, gooey, and delicious. It totally hit the spot. As far as the coffee is concerned I had a hot latte which is always my go to in trying a new coffee place. While my wife opted for an iced coffee. Both were delicious and satisfying. Really like their roast because it's not bitter or overly strong. It is just full bodied which is very pleasing to the palate. As I said off the top we don't generally gravitate toward chain stores but if my travels pick me near a Black Rock I will stop in again!

To make a long story short, I had two stamp cards, one had 7 stamps and the other had 5. I thought, surely I can combine them right to get the $5 off? After all you can see on my stamp cards that I clearly came in a total of 12 times and paid money for a smoothie. I think their stamp card system is something like buy 10 and get the next one $5 off. Uh nope they don't roll that way. The cashier told me the cards couldn't be used together. Okay? That didn't make much sense to me because THEY'VE DONE IT BEFORE happily. I'm thinking what's the big deal? But ok fine I'll pay full price. I then asked them if since I had the two stamp cards, could I combine the stamps onto one card so I don't have to carry both? They've done this before as well. Again I was met with a NO. This literally makes no sense to me. If you see by the stamps that I've been here and bought something 12 times why can't the cards be used together or combined ? The two girls I dealt with made me feel stupid for my very simple requests. Then to top it all off, they didn't even give me a stamp for the purchase I had just made. By the end of it all I still had my two separate cards with the 12 stamps I started with. I mentioned this and the girl who had not even been the one to ring me up insisted that they did give me a new stamp for my today purchase. She even shouted back at the other girl "YOU STAMPED HER FOR TODAY RIGHT?" To which the girl replied "YES I DID." No, you didn't. I threw the stamp cards in the trash. These girls can't count and know nothing about basic customer service. Not that yall care, but you lost a long time customer. I was willing to overlook the fact that your breakfast sandwiches are mid and your toaster only seems to be able to produce wet soggy bread , but yall can kick rocks. Tropical smoothie down the road is better anyway.
