He used to serve me at Rita's across the street, and he's one of those rare lights of a human you never forget -- not because of what they say, but because of how they make you feel. When he looked up and said, "How are you, my friend? I used to serve you at Rita's!" everything clicked. He remembers my name. He remembers my complicated daily order to the letter. He greets me with warmth every single time -- even when I walk in two minutes before closing. And unlike so many places these days, he never shows irritation or rushes me. He makes me feel valued. One night, I accidentally called 30 minutes after they had already closed -- and Farouk still answered the phone, cheerfully, by name, and took my order anyway. When I came in today I heard her complaining about my friend because she asked for more in her drink, might I add very politely. I let my friend know so she could come up here and explain to the lady that she wasn't trying to be disrespectful, and the lady was very much disrespectful to her. she admitted to talking about my friend and she threw us out. And the pastries are on a rack, so you won't be able to view and decide ahead of time.
