If you have to go to Starbucks in this town or general area, this is the one. It actually opens to the UofW, Tacoma, bookstore and had only one homeless dude hanging out. Clientele consisted of college students and a mix of the general population minus kids skipping school. Starbucks prices have gone up recently but here in Tacoma you get to pay a BAG TAX of 5 cents, even for paper. I want to avoid Tacoma in the future, and not just because of this bag tax. They need to figure out a way to help their homeless, who seem to be everywhere. Maybe they can take some of this money from their bag tax to build a shelter or expand their services for the homeless. The coffee was good--made by the coffee master.

On my recent visit to Washington I was dying to have Starbucks because it literally was just above freezing outside! But though as corny as it may sound, I also had to experience drinking Starbucks coffee in the city it originated from, only I wasn't in Seattle, I was in Tacoma. This Starbucks location was easy walking distance from my hotel, and to the art museums and other attractions I was going to be viewing that day. It is centrally located in downtown Tacoma on Pacific Avenue, a main street that borders University of Washington- Tacoma on one side, and Tacoma Art Museum, Children Art Museum, Washington State History Mueum on the other side. On Pacific Avenue there are many shops and restaurants conveniently located for local residents, visitors as well as students from the University. From my hotel, my friend and I walked to visit the Museum of Glass, crossed over on the Chihuly Bridge of Glass, passed Union Station and then within 15 minutes wala! there it was- Starbucks! This Starbucks is one of the better Starbucks that I have been to so it is definitely a 5 stars. There is plenty of metered parking along Pacific Avenue and the light rail also makes frequent stops along Pacific Avenue. This is a medium sized Starbucks with ample seating inside and patio seating. Given the size they carry a lot of pastries and snacks. While we were there they were out of a lot of their holiday classics which was kind of a bummer. I think I ended up getting peppermint mocha which is still one of my favorite holiday drinks. It was a deliciously as always. The customer service here is really good. Everyone seemed to be smiling and in a good cheerful and friendly mood. Interestingly, this Starbucks opens right into the University Bookstore which I thought was cool.

I love this Starbucks! The employees are very optimistic and sometimes they can make your day. We all know Starbucks is a great place to get coffee so food doesn't matter here but customer service and environment. The environment feels very welcoming. They are often warm when it is cold out! Their facility is clean and if you need to use the bathroom you have to ask for a key, which keeps the restroom looking mighty clean. Any-who, I love their customer service! They make my coffee right every time! Consistent is key. They always ask how you're doing and are not afraid to create a conversation with you. The one thing that got to me with is that, I'm not sure who it was, but it was a man who help me and I had told him that I got my gold card recently, he was patient enough to work with me to try and find my free drink for hitting gold; as always technology has let us down. So, he decide to give me coffee on the house :) how generous! I've been going here for 4 years now and ever since my life in UWT, this Starbucks has me connected. Thanks SB!

My constant is the Cardigan Latte, and then I rotate through whatever seasonal drinks inevitably convince me to stray from my usual. I've been here more times than I could possibly count, and the fact that I continue choosing it when Tacoma has no shortage of great coffee shops probably says everything. Get the Cardigan Latte. I ordered the Island Breeze from the summer menu, which was amazing, so much so that I even ordered another one to share with my friend! I somehow also managed to snag the very last chicken chipotle sandwich, and it did not disappoint at all, especially with the great portion size. Unfortunately, they're also often stuck having to explain to customers why food isn't available, and that seems to be a management/ownership issue rather than a staff issue. For a local business that has been around for a while, product availability should be much more dialed in. Weekend demand, back-to-school changes, seasonal patterns, and other fluctuations are things that can be tracked and planned for using basic sales data. I've had to relocate business coffee meetings on four separate occasions because they were short on food, again. That's especially unfortunate to them as a business, because I typically spend $30-$35 when I'm there with a client, 8-12 times/month, which I gladly redirecting elsewhere (~$4k loss in annual business for Lander), not to mention the clients I brought often ended up revisiting, as most of them were new to the location. At this point, I've essentially given up on using this place for meetings. Most unfortunate, go me, is that I genuinely like the staff and the service. In this day and age, with the technology and data available to understand purchasing patterns and customer demand, consistently having enough food on hand should be a solvable problem. Isolated events happen, but the frequency shows a lack of tracking business metrics by ownership.
