Starbelly was recommended to a friend and I by a local friend who lives in the area. Upon arriving, we were seated promptly at the bar. I immediately noticed how beautiful the interior of the restaurant was - tall spacious ceilings, lots of windows with natural light pouring in, an open kitchen in the middle where bar seats were and a gorgeous plant set up at the entrance of the restaurant. Our server/bartender was really nice and we had no problems getting our order in. My friend ordered a Moscow Mule and felt a bit disappointed with the lack of flavour but nonetheless we were excited for the food and decided to give the Mule a pass. The chips and guac were very nice, the corn esquites was delicious and unique! I ordered the gnocchi and when I received it I had no idea they didn't add the bacon until the bartender came by, noticed and sent the food back - thanks for that! The gnocchi itself was soft and chewy and the protein complimented it well. However, I realized the mushrooms in it were raw at the middle.... I notified the bartender and he was very kind to take 15% off my bill. My friend ordered the curry and the bowl was piled high with veggies and prawns. The initial few tastes were okay but pretty quickly, we were able to point out the lack of spice, flavour and just "curryness" to it. Overall, Star Belly seems like a beautiful restaurant with great service that just didn't capture our hearts. I was hoping for the food to be on a higher caliber and was disappointed that most of the food wasn't enjoyable. Maybe next time. :( read more

I wanted to share my experience at Starbelly on Friday October 11th, as we came with high expectations but ultimately left feeling disappointed. We started with the Whipped Ricotta, which came with two slices of grilled sourdough. Unfortunately, we found that this was not enough to enjoy the ricotta appetizer fully. For our main courses, we ordered the Roast Alberta 1/2 chicken, which was described as having a 12-hour brine, soy lacquer, potato pave, roasted vegetables, and jus. However, we learned from our waiter that the dish was unavailable and the chicken dish that was available featured a Cajun seasoning instead of soy. Additionally, the potato pave turned out to be roasted fingerling potatoes, and rather than a half chicken, we received two boneless skinless chicken breasts. The "roasted vegetables" were simply grilled broccolini. Overall, this dish did not meet our expectations, and we felt that the price did not reflect the quality or portion size. The second dish was the braised short rib with wild mushroom risotto, grilled broccolini, and braising jus. While the short rib was tender, it was under seasoned and we felt that the portion of risotto was quite small--barely three forkfuls. Given Starbelly's good reputation, we left wondering why our experience did not align with our expectations. While nothing was terrible, it was overall just okay, with the chicken dish being particularly disappointing. As additional information I did reach out to the restaurant directly about our experience and I am pasting their response below. "Good Afternoon Patrick, My apologies for the delayed response. My wife and I came here intentionally from the north end of the city. We've been here before individually, and his was the first time together. Upon arriving you'll note the bar, it is massive and inviting. From my perspective the best place to sit is the bar to really take in the place. The bar looks into the inner workings of the kitchen so you can really feel part of the process. Service was excellent. The staff are friendly and welcoming. Of note is they don't make you feel rushed, they are attentive but not intrusive. The food is amazing. Both of us were in the mood for a burger so we shared the Starbelly and Grilled Chicken burger. The kitchen took the extra step to divide both, giving us a chance to try both individually. I can't say enough about this place and I do hope they open a similar concept in the north. read more

My sister and hubby used to frequent Starbelly often when they had buck a shuck. That's no longer the case but my sister wanted to go for lunch while we were in town visiting. We dropped in on a Tuesday at noon and had our pick of tables on the makeshift patio. One nice perk is that they have sparkling water on tap. The menu consists of salads, small plates, burgers + sandwiches, pizza, pasta + bowls and mains. Beware, the waitress casually asked if we wanted Parmesan fries, Caesar salad or a house salad without explicitly stating or implying that any substitutes would cost extra. Not impressed when restaurants do that. - 3x Bacon wrapped dates ($3.00 each) - rich and a good appetizer to start our meal. - Beet salad ($17.00) - small portion and overpriced but the beets were tender and sweet. - Fried chicken sandwich ($18.00) - we opted for the house salad ($3.00 extra); a mix of romaine lettuce, arugula, walnuts, goat cheese and pickled red onion. Good but not worth the extra cost. We tried the the spicy sauce ($1.00) which was completely smothered in what was Valentina hot sauce. Don't get it. The chicken breast was soft and tender and I liked the addition of the sweet pickles. The sauce was too much and ended up drenching both the meat and bun. Should have went with the mushroom burger instead. - Steak sandwich ($22.00) - the house fries were crispy but a touch oversalted. We asked for our steak to be cooked medium rare; it came out cooked more than we wanted but overall, this was the better of the two sandwiches. Roasted mushrooms were excellent and the fried onions added a bit of crunchiness. - Spicy mussels + chorizo ($21.00) - my sister added the gluten free bread ($2.50 extra) instead of the toasted baguette. I had a sample of their mussels (good) and chorizo (a touch dry). Nothing particularly memorable about Starbelly's dishes. Pricey meal for standard fare. 2.5 stars. read more

Average size restaurant located south east Calgary near the Residence and Courtyard by Marriott hotels. We are not familiar with this area of Calgary but there are not a lot of choices for restaurants. We decided to try it out since we didn't want fast food for dinner. It is a trendy place with the kitchen in the middle and bar stools all around it. Smaller tables take up the rest of the restaurant except there is a private room with sliding doors and curtains. There is also a room with wine racks behind glass. There was a party going on in the private room and people were seen dancing but the music didn't seem too loud through the doors. What a great idea! Our server greeted us as soon as we sat down and brought us water, but the water was not cold and didn't have any ice. We asked for ice and some lemon which she brought right away. We found the menu prices were a bit high for the quantity of food. The menu offered a variety of shareables, casual choices and main entrees. We had the clam linguini which came with cherry tomatoes and a few croutons sprinkled on top, good taste and pasta was cooked perfectly but the portion was a bit small. The 7 oz. sirloin came with mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables which happened to be asparagus, quite a bit of vegetables. The cioppino had mussels, clams, shrimp and salmon with two slices of bread, the spicy coconut lemongrass broth was very good and not too salty and just the right amount of spicyness. This dish could have been a bit larger. We received excellent service and our food came out fast. I noticed that a lot of people were ordering the burger and fries, the burger looked big and delicious. A nice place for a date and small groups unless you want to party in the private room. I visited Starbelly for the first time last weekend for brunch and had a great time on their dog-friendly patio. They've managed to create a nice, welcoming space in the middle of a suburban parking lot. The road traffic can get a bit loud when large trucks and motorcycles go by but they've done the best they can to put up decor that muffles the sound. Starbelly's brunch menu is small but has great variety and a number of vegetarian options (or items that could easily be made vegetarian). I tried the Starbelly Cilbir which consists of a pair of poached eggs in a bed of dill and garlic yogurt with sourdough toast on the side. I really enjoyed flavours in this dish and it was nice and light compared to other breakfast options. It's a unique menu item definitely worth trying. Starbelly is a great option to come of the other chain restaurants in this part of Calgary and I will definitely be back to check out their dinner menu. read more

I ordered 5 items off skip the dishes from them it was on the pricier side. Mushroom gnocchi I really recommend because it was the best thing we ordered. Seafood linguine was $23 but was plain and tasteless needed salt and lacking a lot of seasoning for its price. Roasted cauliflower was all soggy by the time I got it and was $13 for like 1/5 of a cauliflower head so didn't enjoy that at all. Kale Caesar was terrible they didn't massage the kale or something because the kale was soo bitter and not softened. Beet salad was my second favourite out of the 5 but they didn't give enough dressing so only 1/3 of my beet salad was dressed very disappointed in that as I couldn't ask for extra dressing since it was skip the dishes and not dine in. So overall I wouldn't order from this place again as I only liked 1.5/5 items I ordered. read more

We decided to try this place last night. What a mistake. Not only was the waitress a miserable cow, but the food took over an hour to get to our table. We ordered the steak tartar as an appy and it was mainly filler and sub par. We then waited and waited for our main course, which we had to ask our MIA waitress if it was on its way. She seemed totally put out. When we finally received it, it was cold. I had a steak sandwich which was absolutely nothing like the gourmet meal it was described as. Not only was it cold, it was cut into 4 bite size pieces spread on a soggy peice of baguette. And the salad was bland and tasteless. I can cook way better at home. Birthday lunch for hubby...I've seen such mixed reviews for this resto and decided to try for ourselves. Upon entry, the resto is spacious and has a modern kitchen feel with rustic themed lights hung on rope. The seating is well spaced and our waitress was helpful and pleasant. Since it was our first time she explained everything was made from scratch/ the bread, mayo, ketchup and the in house cured and smoked bacon. Impressive right? Hubby takes her suggestion on the beet salad with arugula. Loved it. Fresh, light and well seasoned without tons of dressing. I had the tuna poke with wonton chips. The tuna was a bit fishy for me and the dressing too salty. I'm unsure if the fishiness was from the seaweed flakes or the fish itself. It wasn't offputting but the fish did not seem as fresh as it could be. I still ate it as I was hungry but would not order it again. Hubby had a burger with fries and said it was satisfying but average when compared to other places whom also use wagyu beef. I had the brick chicken sandwich with Caesar salad. I found the bread to be overly dense and dry but the rest of it was fairly good. Our son had the Mac n cheese with the house made bacon. His dish was by far the fave item we tasted. The sauce was cheesy, rich and the noodles al dente. Aside from this being over salty for our taste, it hit the spot! We drank a lot of water in the afternoon:-) I'd say this place has a lot of potential to be great but it was lacking for me knowing the price point. With a 15% tip, our bill was $102. And we had water while our son had a juice with his meal and no dessert. Our family rating is 3.5/5 for the overall experience of food taste and quality, ambience and service. read more

The first time we went in and tried the food we didn't like it we weren't gonna come back and, when we wanted to pay, the staff wasn't there they were all huddled in one corner and when we tried to get their attention they stood there as if they didn't see you. Yikes. Starbelly, what happened? This was my 3rd visit and I was expecting the same level of quality and service. Made a reservation for 12:45 through OpenTable and arrived on time, waiting for the rest of my party. The hostess argued my reservation and said I hadn't, even when I showed her the confirmation on both text and email. A couple of minutes later, the rest of the party shows up, and server comes to take everyone's order. We ordered truffle fries to start, and our mains - two bowls of soup, gnocchi, and a kids alfredo pasta. The fries were good, and arrived promptly. Unfortunately, things fell apart after that. Nobody ever cleared the fries plate. The hostess served our meals, and forgot the soup spoons - and the fries plate. We had finished our waters, waited another 10 minutes, and finally a server from another table noticed and came by to refill them. This server managed to remove the plate. At no point throughout the meal did our original server ever come back to check on us. We never had a chance to order more coffee or soft drinks. The gnocchi was bitter mush. The tomato soup was fresh, and my son enjoyed his alfredo. Finally, the server tried to rush us out the door, until I pointed out that the kids meal came with a dessert, which we opted to take in a box just to escape. Absolutely 100% will not be back. Love Starbelly, it's a real suburban gem way down in the SE in Seton. I have been there quite a few times for brunch, lunch, dinner and specialty events like their set menu for NYE and today to check out their new Market Brunch on Sundays. Today the restaurant was quite busy for the first weekend of the Market Brunch, people were there celebrating all types of different things from the looks of it. Market Brunch is $25 and you get all you can eat from three different stations - hot, salad/charcuterie, and dessert/waffle station. Plus you can also order specialty eggs that are made to order from your table. It's A LOT of food but very delicious and there's something for everyone. Very cute decor that feels cozy and trendy at the same time, they often have other special events going on as I have also been there for a styling/fashion event and Little Modern Market has hosted their events at Starbelly a few different times. read more

Super disappointed in this place, Seton restaurants have been all duds so far. We went in on the weekend, around 1 pm, and found a single page 'brunch' menu presented. Wasn't really interested in breakfast, so ordered the steak sandwich. When offered sides, a list was rattled off, and ended with "for a charge, truffle fries" I said I would take those with the sandwich. To the sandwich. It was described with a specific type of bread, sauce, toppings, so I was expecting an actual tasty sandwich. The description, decor, and the server did nothing to dissuade this assumption. Super wrong. Got a steak knife delivered before it came, so that was a hint of things to come. Yup, lousy bar steak sandwich, but with a piece of baguette so stale the steak knife couldn't even get through it. Maybe the steak is good? Nope, chewy, stringy, bland. Oh well, at least I got the truffle fries....nope. After being uninspired by fancy truffle fries, I looked around to find others enjoying a much different fry presentation. Awesome, guess I got my fries from the bar as well. Will never return, and the place was 90% empty, and it's a huge piece of property. Went for Sunday brunch with friends who live WAY down south. Saying this, cause if you live WAY north of Calgary, a drive down to the South Health Campus is a commitment. But these guys put on some good food, plus allow kids all times of the day, plus portions are good value for the price. Not sad I made the trek. It is well decorated, bright and really big inside. Kind of country chic without being too pretentious. You can see everything that is going on in the kitchen and bar as the main room surrounds these. They have a large area in the back that can be blocked off for private parties or used as extra seating when they are busy. Really attractive looking room. We were offered the breakfast menu and the lunch menu so gave everyone lots of options to choose from. One couple shared the Flame Roasted Sour Dough Flatbread with duck confit, sautéed field onion, walnut basil pesto and a pile of goat cheese. Really tasty and we all got in on having a bite just to help them finish it off / we really wanted a taste. The boys both had Pastrami Hash which is a nice difference on regular pulled pork you find everywhere else. Chopped up smoked pastrami, peppers, tomatoes, cheese, potato hash, 2x sunnyside up eggs. Sure you would be able to ask for your eggs another way if you really wanted. Good size bowl. Both boys were fill when we were done. The other 2 girls had the Traditional Benedict. Lovely toasted english muffin with thin sliced back bacon, rhubarb mustard jam, and burnt lemon hollandaise - mmmm so good! Came with potato hash and little green salad. I got the Starbelly 'Grilled' Cheese - which in my excitement over grilled cheese assumed it was a sandwich. My bad! It was actually a 125g of oven baked brie cheese, topped with cranberries and walnut bits, crostini and local honey on the side. Both saddened it wasn't a sandwich and really excited by the mountain of grilled cheese in front of me. Shared with everyone. The manager came over shortly afterwards to see how everything was. Told him it was amazing but I wasn't smart and assumed it was a sandwich, and wanted to order the traditional benedict too. I think this may have happened before at breakfast as he knew exactly what I meant and got my order in right away. Came back shortly after and said that my breakfast would be out in 10min. It was, and exactly as ordered. Manager came back a little later to make sure if everything was still ok. Great customer service! We had a little one with us, and high chair wasn't an issue. Server was very responsive when we asked for the bill in advance to make sure we were all paid in case he got fussy. Had a really lovely brunch and will be back. I don't know whats so special about this place. Now I have to say I gave this place a try on 2 different occasions and I held off on writing my first review because of haw bad the first visit was. I thought I would wait till the second visit for this place to try and redeem points.Just to be let down. First visit to star belly my Moscow mule was flat the medium rare steak took over an hour and was served with cold asparagus and a waiter that never came around to fill up our waters or ask if a second drink was needed. Trip number 2, brunch the food was ok... my egg on my easy over was broken and just hid it under things. hash browns were sad and flavorless, and if you advertise brunch why could you not offer people coffee right when you sit them down. So once again we revived a lack of service. Lastly not that it was a big deal more of an annoyance to me because I pick up on things. The speakers for the sound system need to be fixed or at least in the bathroom because 2 sets of music was paying and I cant sing along to 2 songs at the same time. read more

Took my "Dining Babe" for her birthday to Starbelly in Seton. It was somewhat humerous as, upon arriving in the parking lot on a Monday in the early evening, I was not certain it was even open despite checking Yelp for dining hours. I tentatively pulled the door. Thankfully it opened as I had no "plan B." We were seated by a hostess and had a minute to take in the scene before our server approached. The restaurant has an interesting set up where part of the kitchen is located centrally and combined with the bar. Seating at the bar is available as well. They also have a 70 person meeting room that is separate from the main part of the restaurant. Since it was a birthday meal, we started off with a nice bottle of prosseco. The menu is succinct with appetizer section and a charcuterie section. We opted for oysters on the half shell. Our server offered east or west coast, recommending the east which we went with. Mains are not what I would call typical which was refreshing. They still offer a burger and a steak nonetheless. Birthday chick ordered a leg of lamb and mash, while I went with the wild boar gnocchi. Meals took a little while to come out, which was nice as it gave us time to digest oysters and gaze into each other's eyes....(sigh) Meals arrived, hot and fresh. Portions were nicely presented and ample. Both meals were tasty. Gnocchi was light and moist. Wild boar was delicious. Lamb was very good as well. Next trip, lamb will be what I choose! We added a bottle of wine to make it an excellent meal. I mentioned to the server that it was my omnivorous dining angel's birthday and post-meal, a beautiful piece of dark chocolate tart with a candle arrived (comp'd) which was a nice touch. While I did not have it, only witnessed it walk past, the Root Beer Doughnut looked amazing (this will follow the lamb on next visit). read more

We had a really great dining experience here. This place is far south but we made the trek. Open kitchen...so grill is right out in the bar area. We sat along the bar. It was pretty cool to see the action going on. It did get a tad warm. Great staff and service and food was above average!! Prices were really decent for the caliber of great chefs they have here. Had a prosecco to start. Tomatoes arugula salad, burger, Cabernet. Dessert was amazing. A cinnamon sugar donut with made by Marcus ice cream. Holy crap! So good. Now to lay on the couch.... Booked an overnight stay at the wrong hotel, but as it turned out, i found Starbelly. So sometimes things just work out. Four stars is probably generous, but service can improve a rating and in this case it did. I sat outside for a light dinner on 6/12 - i started with ordering a bottle of wine. I believe it was a Justin. Decent bottle, but only had two glasses. So hope someone drank it :) I then ordered a small beet salad. It was very good, but the bowl they give you is ridiculous...way too small for the amount of salad they serve. Could have used a little more goat cheese, but it was very good For my main course i ordered the cioppino. The broth was good, but could have had more spice. The fish was slightly over cooked, the shell fish was way over cooked. I'm kind of a cioppono snob, but if you have it on your menu then be prepared for a critique. I enjoyed the coconut milk flavor...nice twist. But probably wouldn't order it again...not bad, just not up to my standards. Now for the server...what a sweetheart. She was prompt and attentive, without being overbearing. She was funny and could joke right along with you. Always nice for a business traveler, dinning alone. Just went back because a group I hang out with wanted to go back. I complained, and it turns out that none of them really love Starbelly, but it's close to our work and people said "it's not THAT bad!", so we went again. Okay, yes, we all now agree that it's THAT bad! This time we got a table full of appetizers (not too bad this time, I was actually thinking they had improved things!) then came the cocktails, again, surprisingly good! Then came the main course. They had duck breast with truffle shavings on top. I love duck, and I've never had duck done poorly since it's so fatty, it's hard to mess it up because it's always tender. Well, not this time! Somehow, Starbelly came through at screwing up a naturally good meal! The portion was fairly small (everyone at the table asked "Where is the rest of it?"), and they put a gravy-appearing sauce on top that should taste like something, but it doesn't. The duck was cold and tough. I have no idea how they managed that, but I'm starting to wonder if the head chef in their kitchen is Mr. Mike Rowe Wave. That would explain the soggy breaded shrimp appetizer (from my last review) and the surprisingly chewy meats. People at my table told me I should be sending it back, but to get what? Another cold flavourless dish? Nah! I ate most of it because I was hungry by that point. They paired it with a surprisingly wet scoop of mashed potatoes and put a carrot in it. Total? $45. $45 for a tiny, cold duck breast (retail cost $8) and a scoop of wet potatoes (max cost $0.50). They charged $45 for cold meat and a potato. Never again, if my group is going there next time, I'm not going. I don't mind paying even up to $100 a plate provided that it's good food, but to charge that much for basically tasteless food, they ought to work for Jenny Craig! We had a very mixed experience here. We were seated quickly, we had a reservation for the place. We got water fairly quick and ordered our drinks but that took some time. Service was almost non-existent after this. It was just over a half an hour before we even were able to order our food. When drinks came, our server just walked away, we were all ready to order but she just dropped it and left she didn't even ask us if we were ready. It seemed as if she wanted to avoid us. She disappeared for a bit before walking by us and we asked if she can take our order. She then took another 5 or so minutes before finally took our order. We notified her when we ordered that my wife has a severe cilantro allergy, and whatever she had she cannot have any cilantro on it. I ordered the cauliflower bites which I also notified that I am sharing these with my wife so please ensure there is no cilantro. She was nice about it and we got our food in. Food came fairly quick and the food was good. But when the cauliflower bites came, there was a big cilantro garnish on it, which means my wife definitely cannot eat any of it because at this point it's contaminated. Our server between all these was just gone, my wife had to wave her down to inform her that despite us letting her know about this, this still happened. She apologized for it and that was kind of the end of it. She did comp'd the bites at the end which was nice, but our experience was damped by the overall poor service. We were more upset by the fact that even from the beginning since we sat it was a struggle just to get our orders in. Then just upon alerting her of my wife's severe allergy, cilantro still showed up on our share plate. It was pretty disappointing because we really liked the food and the drinks. The restaurant decor and design is really nice but the service needs to improve. At this price point, service needs to be better.
