We ordered 7 pies! 3 regular pies, sausage pie, mushrooms pie, pepperoni pie! The pizza is thin and has nice charring. The size of the pie is good for one person. It was delicious! Every thing was so good!

Great food. Good service. Small place with a neighborhood feel. Came here and sat at the bar. Enjoyed the pizza. People are friendly . I would come back.

I've heard so much about Star Tavern, and it's easy to see why it's popular. The vibe is very casual. It's definitely the kind of place you come with family, have a relaxed meal, chat for a while and head out. There's also a bar, which adds to that laid back feel. The food looked great, but the taste didn't quite match up. So, don't expect anything extraordinary. I tried the penne vodka, eggplant parmigiana, calamari and wings. Everything was decent, just nothing really stood out. In hindsight, I really should have gone with their pizza since that's what they're known for. Service was consistently friendly and attentive, which I appreciated, and having parking available is a huge plus.

This place is good . My friend is local and was very excited to take me. We came later at night, and there were still plenty of people picking up to go orders. The pizza is apparently called "bar pizza". Very thin crust and the sauce is all the way to the edge. Had the cheese pizza and the Buffalo chicken. Both very good. Definitely recommend folding like a taco to eat it. Plenty of TVs and parking right out front. I would visit again.

Star Tavern is a must try in the North East NJ Area. It's as NJ as Taylor Ham. Pizza is perfectly crisp and consistent. Has an old man bar vibe, while being spotless. Service is always great, once you've been here a few times you feel like you know everyone.

Scampi Wings

The fam and I recently ate here and it was a great experience. An ol school pizza shop with community vibes and laid back feel. The food was very good, fresh and shareable portion sizes. We started with mozz sticks (I wasn't a fan of the marinara), & scampi wings which were uniquely seasoned, and crispy. For the main course, I went with the meatball parm, which was cooked to perfection. Hubby had the cheesesteak, he enjoyed it and my daughter had the eggplant & peppers app with grilled shrimp. The shrimp were sizable. Service was good, attentive. The only downside -- and the reason for the missing star -- is the price. While I'm happy to pay for quality, some dishes felt slightly overpriced.

Star Tavern is exactly what you would expect of a neighborhood pizza place. Great atmosphere, delicious food, and great service. Sara, our waitress, was awesome, making sure we were well taken care of. Along with other staff, Sara made sure that our food was out in a timely manner. Sara checked in on us periodically. The service was great. We started with their garlic bread. It was delicious. We also had their Caesar salad. Also delicious. We ordered the Roast Beef Au Jus sandwich and a pepperoni pizza. All was good excellent. We closed things out by ordering their Apple Pie dessert pizza. This is a must. Star Tavern is exactly what you want as a neighborhood pizza place. It was easy to tell who the regular customers were. The staff and locals were chatting away. The bar area was full, along with the tables. They had a couple of TVs set for the Thursday Night NFL game. I was glad to have visited Star Tavern. This is a must when you are in Orange, NJ, in search of excellent pizza along with a great atmosphere.

Regular Cheese Pie

Let me qualify this 2 star first by saying it has potential to move up with just one change (below) Parking is plentiful in the lots next to the restaurant. Staff is friendly and the place was packed for a rainy mid-week evening. The regular cheese pie had so much promise- the cheese was melted and well in some spots with cheese crisped up on some edges- all in a thin pizza. This is the style I love- sauce and cheese all over and thin with a slight crisp. However there was quite a bit of oil, similar to a NY slice- no worries Im starved. As I lift the first slice- instant flop... - uh oh, too much cheese? Nope, a soft, blanket-feeling undercarriage. I thought it may be undercooked but no it had some brown cooked spots too. As a first timer, I was not sure this was normal esp after reading reviews. However, the table over leaned in to ask and see our crust to compare to theirs- and were also disappointed at the undercarriage situation. Apparently they were patrons for many years and clarified that this was not normal and perhaps a new pizza chef was "learning". Hence the potential- and the cheese/sauce were great. We continued having a conversation with our table neighbors (tablors?), which was a great sign of the atmosphere.

Half plain, half pepperoni

I had a friend visiting from Europe who wanted the real NJ pizza experience, so I had to take him to Star Tavern. The second we walked in, they had sports playing on multiple televisions and there was a table of about 20 NJ firefighters seated behind us. We were seated quickly and ordered a half plain/half pepperoni pie and buffalo wings. The wings were okay, but the pizza was the star of the show. The crust was SO SO thin and had just the right amount of crispiness. The sauce was tasty and there was just enough cheese so that the crust wasn't weighed down or soggy. You really can't get pizza like this anwhere else. I loved the casual (but very clean!) setting. The waiters were also very attentive and polite, and offered free refills of my friend's soda. I will definitely be coming back the next time I crave a thin slice!

Meat Lovers Pizza (not on the menu and each meat is an additional charge). Meats added were sausage, pepperoni and bacon.

Reviews are generally positive. People praise the thin, crispy pizza, enjoy the lively, casual atmosphere, and like the popular wings.

Definitely one of the five best pizza places in New Jersey. And they have plenty of parking at the restaurant and next-door parking lot!

Does Star Tavern, participate in UberEats?

No they don't

Do they take credit cards?

Yes they do BUT you may end up paying $100 for a pizza It's divine that's for sure but no pizza is that divine PAY CASH AND TIP WELL that's my advice! I've never seen so many issues with that machine I don't know if they got a led roof or an old…

Do they have gluten free pizza crust?

I did not see one on the menu.

Is it possible to get a bar pie to go? I called and was told no.

Yes!

Are there gluten free options?

I believe they have one or two options. You can call them during daytime. It's always busy after 5.

Gluten free options?

Yes they do, all u have to do is request it..they do have some items on the menu

Hey, are there any vegan options at Star Tavern? The only thing I miss is a killer thin crust and I'll be there with a few friends tonight. Little worried I may crack when I see those pies come out.

Nice black-owned spot with variety of vegan options and it is clean. There's space to dine-in and they are open on Sundays. The energy is also open enough where strangers will have a convo while waiting. Coming from Brooklyn, I'm happy to have this spot so close to where I am now. Savory: My go-to is the chickpea tuna sandwich. I've tried it on a roll, long sub, and gluten-free... highly recommend the long sub. It's way too messy on the roll for me. Typically get it with the works. The potato salad is also very good most of the time (sometimes the potatoes are a little undercooked). I've also had the macaroni salad and the fried mushroom sandwich which are also good. I definitely enjoyed the thanksgiving special with stuffing (highly recommend that if they bring it back this year). Tip: if ordering a hero and you don't see yourself eating the entire thing in one sitting, I recommend requesting for the sandwich to not be cut so you can cut it evenly on your own For baked goods: the peach cobbler is good and it comes in a cute cup with a little spoon. I've also had the lemon cake & rum cake. Would order all 3 again. Would love to see donuts or cinnamon rolls (hopefully without cashews or walnuts due to my allergy). DRINKS: I haven't had a drink there that I would get again. The teas are overwhelmingly sweet; hibiscus punch was a lot like kool-aid to me. I also don't recommend the matcha if you are a matcha snob. Harper's Cafe is a great black-owned spot for a consistently good latte and they use quality matcha if you want quality nearby. Great spot with lots of options, especially if you're looking for a black-owned spot to support.

Millburn is the flagship store, so naturally there are menu items exclusive to this location. John's Market has been at this same location since 1917 (103 years-WOW) when 85 year old Paul's father, John (as in John's Market) opened the Market. You sometimes hear that some of these places are like taking a trip into the past. In this case, nothing could be truer. John's is a no frills, cozy, friendly, nostalgic, neighborhood Italian eatery certainly reminiscent of the 1920-1940's. The walls are covered with photos of old time police, firemen, sports figures, visitors, etc. which certainly add to the classic Italian ambiance and vibe this place puts out. Old wooden tables lined in 3 rows offer a communal eating arrangement for John's customers, who clearly were pretty much all regulars and who knew each other. A lot of Italian language conversations going on here. By the time we left we also were friends with everyone around us. It's that kind of place. As soon as we entered we were met by the current owner, Paul, who is John's son and who was celebrating his 85th birthday today. He even shared his birthday cake with everyone. Our waitress, Grace, could not have possibly been nicer or more accommodating. We started off with a complimentary oil based spread of vegetables which went perfectly with the nice fresh Italian bread which we all shared as we waited to order. We started with a choice of white or red pasta fagioli. I had the white and I have to admit it ranked with some of the best pasta fagioli I ever had. (Paul says that he didn't want to brag but his escarole and beans would be the best I ever had-next time.) My entree was a simple Chicken Parmesan sandwich which was well filled with two nice pieces of chicken covered in a very tasty and tangy tomato sauce (gravy) served on really delicious Italian bread. Outstanding! One in our group ordered an egg, pepper and potato sandwich on Italian bread, which he thoroughly enjoyed. Said he hadn't has one in many years which made it all the better. We then enjoyed Paul's birthday cake with some complimentary coffee while talking with Paul about the history of his establishment and the many pictures covering his walls. Great lunch, great time! I highly recommend stopping by John's if you get the chance. You won't be sorry. By the way John's is a BYOB. Thursday is his Special's Day' where you get served what he makes that day. Paul did say it may be very hard to get in as he gets quite a crowd on that day. I can understand why. Street parking only but we had no trouble finding a spot. 03/13/2020
