I got my haircut here, all I wanted was a simple trim. When I got home I noticed it was completely uneven- random strands of hair that are way longer than others, the "layers" look like they were randomly hacked away. She helped me decide on a shape and strategy for my hair after I had been growing it out for a while, and provided some really helpful tips for coloring and styling too. I was in desperate need of a hair color, which hadn't been touched since May (yay post grad life). I deferred to Yelp, and saw that this place had 5 stars, so decided to give it a try. I am going to agree with the fellow reviewers. Star is in walking distance from my apartment, it's handicapped accessible (a beautiful building!), and the staff rocks! My stylist, Elizabeth talked with me about what I wanted, asked me some questions and explained what she thought was best. In the past, although I liked where I got my hair done, I would defer to my stylist and always ended up wishing it was blonder but it was too much of a pain to go back. Elizabeth knew exactly what I wanted, and although I had booked a "full highlights" appointment, she told me we could get by with a partial, and ended up charging me less. She also did a great job washing and styling my hair and provided an amazing, lengthy scalp massage which was awesome! We also chatted the entire time, which was fun, but not forced or awkward I don't even remember the last time I found a salon I loved so much, right after moving somewhere, but Star Salon has won me over! Okay, I'm leaving another review because I just can't help it!!!! After leaving Colorado and being gone for a year and half... My hair has only been touched twice (for a trim and a cut). I had not been able to find the right person to cut my hair the way Amanda at Star Salon has! So today I came in... My hair grown back to what its original length (just like when Amanda first cut my hair over 2 1/2 years ago). It's like time had never passed and Amanda and I caught up to where we had left off the last time I was in. She worked her magic as we chatted about what had happened the past year. Such a great salon! This was my second time there and again, I am so pleased with the results. I have always kept my hair very long (almost touching my butt) but I was ready for a change, so I decided I wanted to donate and go a lot shorter. I was randomly booked with Andrea, who did such an amazing job! She helped prep and chop off my hair (12 inches!!!) to be donation ready, then gave me the most stylish, textured collarbone length haircut that I couldn't be more pleased with. The Salon cancelled my appointments even though I confirmed over a month in advance. I booked online, changed the date because there was an error and now they say I'm not allowed to have an appointment ever. A very confusing online system and rude staff. The cut was fine, all I wanted was a simple trim. My issue was that I felt judged about not having a hair cut in a very long time and I also didn't love the scare tactics my stylist used when trying to lecture me (4 separate times in one hour) about the use of heat in my hair. I get it, it's not an awesome choice to flat iron my hair for work everyday BUT this is the type of service you should be able to relax and have fun, not be lectured repeatedly and told about clients needing bobs because they melted their hair off... It was very odd though because I went with a friend and they treated her very differently- she loved them. Maybe my hair was too offensive? Haha not sure, but I won't be back. After reading many positive reviews on Yelp!, I decided to give Star Salon a try. Here's why they got 5 stars from me: 1. You can book your reservation online, and pick your stylist, services, time, date, etc. This function makes getting a hair cut SO much easier and more convenient. 2. Super duper cute decor inside. The salon is very clean, and is small and cozy. I love the way the stations are set up in the middle of the room. 3. Wendy did a fantastic job on my hair! As a person with short hair who tends to look like a 12-year-old boy, I am extremely wary of having people come at my head with scissors. Historically, it has not worked out well for anyone. Given my serious apprehensions, it was a pretty big deal for me to have Karen cut my hair. Expectations were low, anxieties were very high. I will say first that having someone wash/condition your hair is just about the best feeling ever. I mean, holy crap, it's awesome. But what is even more awesome is getting a haircut from someone who listens to my weird hair demands (this thing curls that way and this thing sticks out and ...) and turns me out with an haircut that is not only cute and easy, but makes me look like ... well, a grown-ass woman. I've completely fallen in love with my new cut, which I barely have to touch out of the shower and which makes the most of my naturally wavy hair while concealing my elf ears and general boyishness. I came here based on reviews, and, while my cut was fine, it was just fine. No more than fine. But I also didn't get one of the heralded stylists on any reviews. I guess I also expect a little more to my cut than just cutting, which means I AM PAYING YOU $45 TO CUT MY LITTLE BOY HAIRS. I am a girl. I have super short hair. I can has scalp massage? Please? No. The shampoo and condition was as clinical as if I could somehow train my border collie to do it. Beyond that, my stylist wasn't terribly knowledgable about product: "I use Bed Head. What makes Bumble & Bumble better?" "It just... is. I don't know." Um, cool, well, I'ma keep using Bed Head, because I already do, and you haven't given me a compelling argument otherwise. You could say, "OMG. Bumble uses baby fawn oil secretions!" or "OMG. Bumble has never, ever touched any animal for product testing other than to see if the chemist was a cat person!" or even "Well, Bumble tends to ______ and ______ better than Bed Head." You could totally lie. But I feel like she didn't know or absolutely had to blindly sell the Bumble without knowing the difference. Because I understand that I can't always have things when i want, they are never available for walk-ins or cancellations, really, and that's okay. But know that you'll wait a week+ for an appointment. read more

I love the studio. I love the location. And I really like Taylor, I just don't like my haircuts. She does less to my hair then I do at home. And I have short, straight hair. At home I just blow dry and run a straightener through it. 10 minutes top. You have to try hard to do less. When I leave I definitely don't look like I've come from a salon. While it is nice being out in 20-30 minutes, I paying the same price as I would to get a 45-60 min service. Additionally, I feel as though I have to ask multiple times in one sitting for something to get done (shorter here, texture there). I just don't feel like there is an attempt to do much other then trim up the bottom layer and send me on my way. Taylor is a really fun stylist, but maybe just needs a little more motivation or something. read more

If you check out their website, you can book your appointment online, pick what day and time you would like, and choose which stylist you want (or take your chances with the first available hair-snipper). Super convenient and takes the edge off. I was set up with Wendy, and boy, am I glad that she was the lucky one to listen to all of my odd hair requests. I have a very specific style, and Wendy knew exactly how to take care of it. I did not have to give much direction. She was definitely surprised that I was basically a haircut virgin, but she took me under her care and definitely made my hair a LOT more healthy and shiny. I walked out of the salon, super confident and ready to take on the world. Except when I got home, I was disappointed that I could not style it the way Wendy had designed it, but I have gotten used to my hair now. I walked in one time on the fly and they could fit me in 40 minutes later. They have convenient online scheduling which I love. Went here for the first time today and got my hair cut and layered by Terra and she did an amazing job! The cut was the perfect length and the layers are blended nicely. My hair is dyed and has some serious damage and she gave some good tips for current treatment along with some ideas about possible options for treatment or a style change (cut and extensions) for the future, all of which I found really helpful to think about as I'm looking for possible options to help treat my hair or a different style altogether. I decided to give it a try and took advantage of the Yelp special for first timers. Duane was awesome. I have really thick hair which does what it wants and won't let a simple thing like product tell it what to do. After a thorough consultation and a weighing of my options, he gave me exactly what I was looking for. My hair has honestly not looked this good in years. Even without the special, the price is very reasonable. If you account for the included shampoo, it is right on par with Floyds for a cut you're actually happy with. Wendy Smith is my hair GURU. I started going to her about a year ago (on a friend's recommendation) and never want to see anyone else. I used to "dye" my own hair, going from a light strawberry blonde/brown to almost black. It was streaky and uneven because I couldn't see the back of my head and my roommate wasn't the greatest assistant. Wendy started "coloring" my hair, helping it transition without chopping it all off. She's amazing and is always up for something new. I normally just walk in and let her color it whatever she feels like and am neverrrrr disappointed. Wendy has helped identify the most important products so I can keep the vibrant color and the length, but never pushes me to buy things I don't actually need. Besides being a hair genius, she's also hilarious. After having gone to Aveda salons where they want to massage your shoulders, put makeup on you, and try to upsell anything and everything, this place was refreshing. Jenny made me feel comfortable right away, listened to my ideas and made great suggestions. I actually left not feeling like I had to redo my hair the moment I got home It also didn't take forever. I saw Amanda for the first time this week and I was uber impressed. I came in with a wreck of hair and left with a beautiful do. She was able to clean up the mess as far as my color and give me a wonderful cut. Although I had wanted a much more drastic color she did the right thing and went safe for now. She explained everything she did and was actually excited for me once her vision of what my hair could look like came to fruition. You can tell she really enjoys what she does. I like STAR because I because I've been able to find free parking, because its next door to a coffee shop and across the street from a wine bar -- but most of all I like STAR because of stylist Wendy Snyder. Last year I was having dinner at Encore and commented on our waitress's adorable do. She kindly told me Wendy Snyder was her stylist. I made an appointment with Wendy, liked what she did with my hair, felt at home in her chair, and consequently followed her when she left Brand X Salon and moved to STAR. Most recently Wendy did a keratin treatment on my hair (like the Brazilian blow-out but instead of toxic its actually good for your hair.) My new hair is shiny and smooth, it dries faster and requires less styling. It looks and feels marvelous, without me using all kinds of products on it. I have received many unsolicited complements on my hair after this treatment -- most importantly from the number one man in my life; my husband. Love my new hair! read more

WENDY is the bomb .com!! Wendy has been cutting my hair for about 3 years now and I couldnt be happier with how she cuts hair. I have gotten stopped several times by strangers asking to take a picture of my hair, then I had them Wendys card because she is that awesome. Before you read this, please know that I never write yelp reviews. This is probably my second review I've ever written? Anyway, sorry for the length. This salon is definitely worth talking about. I was thinking about chopping off around 10 inches of my hair (big change!) but was petrified - the last time I had done that, the stylist literally grabbed my ponytail and snipped. I've been pretty scarred, so I really wanted to find the best. After scoping out Yelp, Star Salon seemed like the best bet. Plus, their stylist Wendy seemed to have the best/most reviews, so I decided to ask for her. I called to make an appointment, and they said they couldn't fit me in as soon as I wanted but that they'd check and call back. Five minutes later, they called back and asked, "Can you come in literally in thirty mins?!" I rushed my ass over there and thank GOODNESS I did. Wendy is so freaking cool. She's beautiful, stylish, and her hair is (obviously) magnificent. I told her exactly what I wanted and showed her tons of photos, and she gave me her honest input and gave me some cool new ideas as well. Two hours later, I walked out with a wavy bob, darker brown hair and eyebrows for only around 115 dollars. YES - and it's the best cut I've ever gotten. First off I would like to say that I was absolutely impressed with this salon when I first called to ask about pricing for a bang trim and clean-up but not a full cut. I called numerous salons before this and all of them would charge me a full haircut when I didn't see a full hair cut as necessary. This changed when I called Star Salon. The receptionist was incredibly friendly on the phone and was SUPER helpful in answering my questions. They charge $10 for just a bang trim for non-clients (totally reasonable), and free for existing clients. She told me that each stylish has their own pricing for cuts, etc. and she would ask the stylists how much they would charge to clean-up my hair. She then promised to call me back with more information in a couple hours (which she did). We settled on $20 for a bang trim and clean-up (definitely do-able). I was extremely impressed by her efforts to meet my needs and follow up. She definitely went the extra mile and it showed. I made an appointment with Laura Prescott and I have to say that she exceeded my expectations. Not only was she super friendly and carried a conversation well, she executed what I wanted perfectly. She took the time to ask me about my hair, get a feel for it and what the other stylists usually do (mini consult). I told her to go to town with the thinning shears, she did just that and my hair came out perfect. I'm VERY picky when it comes to my bangs and she cleaned them up quite nicely and maintained my signature bang flip at the end (without me even asking her to do so).
