I loved coming here- I think I've always had a good experience. Very meticulous ladies. I had an anxious experience today though- there was an older lady who sat beside me, who clearly had foot fungus. She was embarrassed about them and said that she had terrible nails. The nail stylist proceeded to file these nails down with the electrical filer usually used for shellac. They were sitting right beside me and my anxiety was through the roof. Why would she be allowed to get her nails done? In this situation, shouldn't the business refuse service? I would really hope so but I guess not?? There was foot fungus nail dust flying everywhere and I was panicked and upset that I hadn't worn a mask. I'm really not sure how I feel after this experience. I'm going to have to just stay home and do my nails on my own. If you have foot fungus, please treat it first. Hiding it under coats of nail polish is not helping anyone! Please refuse people with foot fungus so people can get their nails done safely. Thank you! read more

It's my first time coming to this nail salon which a good friend of mine who is a regular here. The first impression was that it was very nice and spacious salon, they had a huge variety of polish colours (which makes it even harder to choose) and the pricing is very affordable. My first experience here was pretty good and I have no complaints. The technician was nice and friendly and made sure every I was satisfied every step of the way. It breaks my heart to have to give this place a one star review. I usually never give places a second chance but I have actually given this place 4 chances and I cannot come back anymore. My friend introduced me to Star Nails for a ladies catch up and I was super happy with the closeness to my house, the cleanliness and the assortment of colours for nails. I admit, I have dry hands but I expect that nail experts know how to deal with different skin types and are extra careful not to break skin. The first time, my fingers was in fact knicked.... I bled, she apologized. The colour was beautiful so despite the incident, I told myself I would come back. The second time, a different lady did my nails and once again, I was cut, I bled, she apologized. maybe third time is a charm so I came back, saw a lady and told her to be extra careful because I had bled the last two times.... And sure enough, she was amazing. She paid such good care and I was really happy... No bleeding and happy hands... I was once again confident with this establishment! Last week, I went back to do my nails - it was extremely busy for a weeknight and the line was starting to build up. I sat down and a young woman was helping around with cleanup but was not really dealing w. Clients directly. however, she came up to me and started doing my nails, although I believe an older woman was probably in front of me. As she started working on my hands, I started to wonder how many manicures she had done before mine. Within the first five minutes, she had made two of my fingers bleed. I asked if she was new and she said she had been on Canada two weeks and going to school. I respect that and believe that everyone should have the right to get a part time job on the side, quite commendable too. However, she had no idea what she was doing. She kept clarifying with the more experienced ladies in her language on what step to do next and did not understand the application of nail polish which made me feel like a complete guinea pig who was going to have to pay for this treatment. To be honest, If I was older, and Caucasian, might I add, I don't think they would have ever put her to do my nails. I felt like because I was a younger Asian, I would not make as much of a fuss. So to close, the fourth visit in Chinese is the end of my visits to Star Nails. I truly believe in chances but I think that I got the shortest end of the stick. read more

I had been going to Star nails for years for manicures, pedicures and bikini wax and was happy with the results and with the price. But last week I had a horrible experience. Pedicure was very quick. Quicker than usual. The young woman appeared to be new, I haven't seen her before. The woman doing waxing must have been new, I have never seen her before. The wax was not too hot but when she pulled the first strip I screamed in pain. The second one was even more painful, I screamed again. I asked her to stop and looked down to see a large purple bruise forming on my right thigh. The owner came in, apologized profusely and finished the job. She is a real pro and does a great job with waxing - completely painless. Her name is Su. Ask for her if you want a good experience. Couple of days later both of my big toes started hurting. They were thick with hardened, dried up skin and painful cracks. I bandaged up and it took four more days for the cracks to heal. When I took off the bandages, my big toes looked horrible (see the pics) I will go back for waxing with Su, but i'll be getting my pedicures done elsewhere. read more

I highly recommend STAR nails, at Gerrard Square, which is very clean, spacious, bright and cheerful and has a large TV to watch the news. The best part is when your nails are drying you can look outside and be comfortable waiting. I've been to other places, such as Urban Nails, but they are overcrowded, noisy and rushed. I highly recommend STAR Nails since it is a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere and they do an excellent job on your nails not to mention a nice massage. read more

I have been to this salon several times over the past 3 years and considered it a no-surprises, no frills spot but last Saturday I had to deal with an inexperienced, uncomprehending manicurist who failed to understand simple comments like "my nail beds are sensitive go easy", or "stop that hurts", instead yanking my hand away as she continued to whittle into my flesh. She was basically unmotivated..unmotivated to do a perfect job (her filing/shaping was terrible); unmotivated to establish some type of communication (her English was non-existent); unmotivated to please (she was sulky when asked if there were any magazines because this meant she had to go get them. I won't return. She was poorly trained if trained at all and SHAME ON YOU Star Nail Manager for giving this very clumsy girl a client when she could not execute a simple manicure or pedicure without stumbles and then a big fall. read more

I have been to this place for a shellac polish 4-5 times. its $20 without the manicure.... I am an aesthetician so i do the manicure myself prior to the treatment, but i dont own the correct polishes or lights for shellac so I pay to get that done. the second star i only gave them because they are cheap i was never majorly impressed, there was always a few problems with the result, but it was things i could fix myself. like the edges near my cuticles would be a bit messy, but i could file them into neat curve shapes. My nails would be filed wonky but I could correct that. but then the more times i returned the worse it seem to get. They didnt use a base coat with one colour i requested, so i asked about it and she said that with this brand it wasnt necassary. Which may be true... but I've never heard of doing that.... also the colour chipped away much quicker than usual... maybe in 4-5 days i started noticing bits flicking off. They take so long painting all the nails on each hand, by the time they put your hand under the light all the polish has spread down to the sides of my nails, leaving the edges with a thick, misshapen, chunky layer on. Which makes your nails look horribly curved and makes the polish not last as long. I will not be returning any longer. I actually got a better service at George Brown college spa.... n these guys are training. read more

I liked this place and I will return. It is clean and organized, the ladies were friendly but left me alone and they were quick but did a good job. They have a great selection if colors and they do Shelac which is great. I also like that the UV light is right in the chair so I didn't have to move and I got to watch trashy ladies TV shows while my nails were done. At $30 for a Shelac manicure with the added bonus of a fantastic hand massage it was well worth it and I'll be back. I'm looking forward to a pedicure in the massage chairs when sandal season comes around again. read more

Originally, I had planned to promote this place, being so very pleased with my first couple of visits. Down from the pedestal for you, Star Nails! My last visit did disappoint, and I now feel torn about my feelings toward you. The good? Service is usually available, efficient, and fast. A varied array of polish awaits, daunting those suffering from indecision. I'm one, and get chased away, having spent too much time mulling over the choices. Really? You busy right now? Is the water getting cold? It may have been. In previous visits, I found that the manicure and pedicure was well worth the $35 I put out for the service. Quite good, actually. However, on this attempt, not so much. Maybe she was upset? Me, taking my sweet time picking out an appropriate hue? A lackluster pedicure played out while I drown myself in the pile of trashy mags set out upon my chair, as if to indicate chit chat would not be welcome. (Which, I'll note, is fine.) After that, I endured what I'll refer to as a very aggressive manicure. Painful, even. The esthetician jabbed at my cuticles, angrily plucking the rim with the nippers. I sat, mildly frightened. What the hell? My nails were filed down to the quick, and splashed with colour. Nail colour, which chipped within the day, and wore at the edges. One day. I have a chip in my pedicure too. Which, would be fine if it simply lasted a bit longer, but I hustled for $45 at the cash. Suspect, I asked. And the amount was whispered to me in a hush. What?! I'm on to you. Not sure if I'd gamble I repeat. It is close by. And, I can head over to Tropical Joe's, and admire my fresh manicure while I down a roti, but still. It saddens me to give such a poor rating, but my experience was terrible. They rushed to get my nails done and ended up doing a very sloppy job. I asked if they had the time and they assured me they did, but 5pm was their closing time and I arrived at 4:15pm. 1. It was extremely expensive to go her, $40 for a refill, seriously? Then $3 if I wanted to cut down the nails (which weren't even that long) and then an extra $5 if I wanted color... shouldn't a refill come with color? 2. The job was entirely sloppy 3. After ONE DAY a nail broke right down the middle, went to get it fixed, next day another nail came off. Its been 5 days and all my nails have broken and I have to get them completely redone. I do not recommend anyone go to this location, you will be extremely upset with the finished product. read more

Worst manicure ever. Do not get bio gel nails here. Not only did they mess up the design I asked for, which is simple and I've had done at multiple other salons, but they did such a bad job that 3 nails popped off within a week! When I went back to complain the woman who did it gave me attitude and made excuses and tried to charge me$10 to fix it. Then after I left three more broke off. I like my nails a certain way and she didn't want to accommodate with what I was requesting. I'm almost sure that she was swearing at me in a different language. I love this place! Always an esthetician available and each do an incredible job. I usually get a pedicure but have had a shellac manicure once when my nails looked decent enough. Last month, at a downtown spa, I had a European Pedicure that cost $80 before taxes. The only difference was a paraffin treatment at the spa. Well worth the $25 spent at Star Nails - not so much at the spa. Love giving business to a neighborhood jewel. You will see both female and male customers in the massage chairs soaking their feet. I only get my pedicure done here. The ladies do a good job, the establishment is clean and they have an endless array of colours to choose from. My pedicure lasts longer than it takes for my nails to grow out. I've spend three times the money and my nails chipped much sooner. A bargain of a pedicure and sweet ladies. read more
