Be warned - the prices at this meat counter are exorbitant. And they don't label prices in the case so you don't know what you're paying until they ring you up. And you'll feel taken advantage after the fact like we did. I naively thought there prices would be on par with other local meat counters like Market Hall or Berkeley Bowl, where I normally buy meat so didn't ask. But no. I was charged $50 for 1.4 pounds of rib-eye. It was $34.99 per pound. I felt too embarrassed and was too shocked to say anything in the moment but now I'm just mad at myself. Won't shop at this meat counter again.

Always great sandwiches. But I'm sad that they only do limited menu now :(. But still great! I recommend classics and dirty birds

Want a solid sandwich? Then this is the place. I understand the cost of everything has gone up but, for me personally, spending $16 on a sandwich is not an everyday thing. We were able to call and reserve our sandwiches for pickup and they were ready right when we got there. I got the classic and split it with a friend while we snacked on a few other things for a light Saturday picnic. Is this sandwich good? Yes it's built with nice quality bread and stuffed with meat. Is it a $16 sandwich? Harder to justify.

Located in the back of a market, you will find the deli counter. Sandwiches are made 11am-2pm and costs $12.00. You can order over the phone or place your order inside. Pros: -friendly staff person (woman) helped me out -meat, veggie, and pescatarian sandwiches are available -accept credit cards -takes about 20 minutes to be made- enough time to walk around the market -street parking in front. I had no trouble pulling in and finding a spot but it depends what time you come -you don't pay until they give you your order -rustic bread, sandwiches are filling Cons: -no tables to sit and eat your food- however there are two benches in front of the store -I wasn't sure what the system was to place my order when I got there (there is no number system or formalized lines). However the line died out and I was able to place my order at the register. They will call your name when it is ready.

Their DELI! Yum! We've been coming here for years and the quality of their meats are still spot on and always delicious when we go! And La Farine bakery bread, yes please! First this bakery on its own is so good and then pair it with their sandwiches and meat, it makes it even better! So, yes, they did raise prices during covid ($16) but what other stores and restaurants haven't. I feel that it's a given during this pandemic and you know what, the store/deli needs to make money too. Businesses are struggling right now and by shopping and buying here, you're helping them out and the community stay alive during these times. They've also modified their menu to sandwiches they make a day so be sure to call or check out their menu online before you go. Our go to favorites are the Good Fella and Godfather! My favorite is The Godfather with the salamis hot coppa and prosciutto! So good, you can't go wrong with the combos they made in these, it's delicious. Per their website: "Goodfella Genoa: salami, hot coppa, fresh mozzarella, arugula, sun dried tomatoes, balsamic vinegar, olive oil, and a touch of mayonnaise. Godfather Salami, hot coppa, prosciutto, provolone, arugula, roasted peppers, olive oil, black pepper." There isn't a day that have both on the same day but no biggie, their other sandwich choices are also really good so we usually get both and share. They have a good variety of drinks to pair with your sandwich too so check out their selection. It's a nice community market so if you're stopping by for a sandwich and find you need something for the kitchen, they likely would have it. They are also a full service butcher with high quality meats which is great! Overall, I'd recommend getting their sandwiches and coming here for their market. They're still good quality sandwiches that you can't everywhere in the bay. Give them a call and reserve your sandwich before you go. It makes it all the more convenient. Thanks Star Meats for always a great lunch :) Lastly, support your community and small businesses especially now.

We stopped by here on a Sunday afternoon to try out this sandwich as we heard a lot of good things about it. We tried the goodfella sandwich which consist of Genoa salami, hot coops fresh mozzarella, arugula, sun dried tomatoes, balsamic vinegar, olive oil and mayo. The meat was very fresh and it tasted great with the other ingredients. Only thing was that the sandwich was $18, which is a bit pricy.

Alright, we are about to open California back up and this store still do not have their famous sandwiches available. I call every couple of weeks and this time I got a very very very "annoyed" person on the phone. So I am coming here to say that customer service which was already lacking , its even worst and that now they are not even compensating with the amazing sandos. So really ... go look elsewhere . I am done trying with this store . If anyone has a good sandwich place they love please DM me . But don't listen to me ... read the reviews.

For the leg of lamb, I think most people get a whole leg of lamb. That was way too much for me and I think the butcher thought I was confused when I asked for less and asked me what I was doing with it. He ended up saying he could give me a half leg of lamb and I agreed. Thar was about 3 and a half pounds (bone included) which was the perfect amount. I seared it and then braised it and the meat fell off the bone. Delicious and the price was pretty good. I was cooking my first pork chop and decided to come here to get it. Their pork isn't labeled as Berkshire or Duroc or anything but that probably keeps the price down. For chops, they had boneless, bone in, and double cut (which was also bone in). I mentioned I wanted it to be about 2 inches thick and the butcher said to get the double cut.I got 2 beautiful thick pork chops for $6.99 a pound so about $18 total. The regular cut bone in pork chops were the same price though obviously smaller. I brined this overnight and reverse seared it and it was great. The chop was a loin chop- loin and then a tenderloin nugget- not a pure rib chop. Cooked really nicely and was tender which I think was partially the overnight brine and also their pork. They do sell some vegetables and grocery supplies if you want to just make a single stop. They also have a deli with some sandwiches that looked good and prepared foods. I was very focused on buying the things I came in for and getting on with my day both times but I would like to take a closer look in the future as it looked good. Solid butcher shop and clearly loved since it was busy both on a weekend and during the week. I'm sure I will be back.

Hey I like some veggies and fruit and shrooms also but most of my diet is meat and seafood, as mama God intended it to be. It is awesome to have such a nice family owned butcher shop in town that is all about quality. They also have duck which I haven't purchased yet be cause I don't have my brothers insane duck recipe. That will change soon. The other items I buy are bones and oxtails for bone broth. In the freezer section are meaty oxtails, lamb and beef neck bones and sometimes knuckle bones. In the meat counter they have cut up leg bones. My number one place for bones. It was our first time, but the process was pretty straightforward grab a bowl and tongs by the entrance and start picking from a great variety of meats, veggies, and more. I went with the signature spicy hot pot broth (medium spice), and I highly recommend it so flavorful! Prices were fair for the quality and amount of food, and I'd definitely come back. Only downside was that a few ingredients in the freezer weren't fully stocked, but honestly, still an easy 5 stars from me.

"Hot Pot, Mongolian Grill style, in downtown Berkeley"…read more Came here on Black Friday evening at 6:45pm, and it was pretty empty in the restaurant. The place is BRIGHTLY lit, but I confess I would have been confused on protocol without coming with two past diners. There are some large bowls on the side and tongs, and you stack the meats, veggies, and starches from the adjacent fridge/ freezers in the bowl as you walk in, then hand it to the cashier and note which broth you'd like. They then cook it up and bring it out to you. Because they cook it with materials you picked (rather than then giving you ingredients and you cooking it), that's why I call it "Mongolian grill style". The process was a bit difficult-- I don't know Mandarin, and some choices were only labeled in Mandarin (or were clearly mislabeled). For instance, I saw something that looked like fake crab meat sticks, but later discovered it had some sort of meat filling that was not obvious. I picked as best I could though, and everything looked to be in good shape/ quality. The choices were broad-- many veggies and meats, some starches like ramen or other noodles, etc. I got the signature spicy with a setting at mild, and it had some zing but was very doable for me. One of my dining partners had the tomato and asked for "no" space, and she got what she requested-- said it tasted like Campbell's tomato soup. Meanwhile others with us got the Sichian spicy and were sweating hard. The food took maybe 10 minutes to come out, which was fine. The price was about what you'd expect for the downtown Berkeley area-- not "cheap" but reasonable for what it was-- cost about $150 for the 5 of us. Overall, I enjoyed it. Not something I see myself craving and running back to, but a decent choice in the area.
