I really like this Star Market for its convenience of being nearby to me & there's lots of parking; especially love coming here on a rainy/snow day when I need to shop for some groceries because they have underground free parking! There's an elevator that takes you up to the main grocery store level, so during inclement weather it's perfect! No need to go outside at all haha. There's also a Starbucks inside that's by the entrance, which they added in recent years... love getting a quick pick me up coffee before starting my grocery shopping. For the most part, they keep it pretty clean in here & organized. The store is easy to navigate and I never have issues finding anything I need. read more

Very poor produce. It locks away Tide detergent and batteries behind glass. Not welcoming.

I have been a regular customer at this location for several years and have witnessed many changes during that time. The store has undergone a noticeable facelift, including a larger, more inviting produce section, the addition of a Starbucks, and an expanded deli and hot food area. While these upgrades have been pleasant and appreciated, there is one glaring issue that has left me frustrated: the new locked cabinets for laundry detergent and body soaps. Yesterday, I had the displeasure of needing to purchase laundry detergent. To do so, I had to track down an employee on a Sunday morning--arguably the least staffed day and time of the week. Not only was it inconvenient to disrupt the employee, but she also struggled to unlock the cabinet. The entire process was unnecessarily time-consuming and frustrating. The locked cabinets are not only absurd but also a significant inconvenience to customers. It left me questioning whether this is a standard practice across all Star Market locations or if this policy is unique to the Mattapan store. Is it possible that these items are locked up solely because of the store's location? I plan to visit another Star Market outside of Mattapan to compare and will update this review accordingly. While I understand that theft prevention measures may sometimes be necessary, where is the data to support such actions? What evidence justifies locking up specific items like laundry detergent and body soaps? If these measures are based on assumptions rather than concrete data, it raises serious concerns about fairness and the message being sent to the community. Policies like this, when not supported by data, risk perpetuating harmful stereotypes and alienating loyal customers. Moreover, let's address the real issue: these products cost a fortune. Could the high prices be the primary reason these items are occasionally taken without payment? Instead of locking them up, why not focus on making them more affordable? I'd also be curious to see how the sales of these products have been impacted, given the significant inconvenience customers now face in obtaining them. Also, can you replace the ratty bench out front and do the snow removal on the sidewalks of your business?? read more

I was shopping for Matzo and other Passover Seder items. This was a Star market on River St in Boston. After searching the store and finding nothing I went to customer service. They directed me to the Asian section then asked if Passover was " some kind of holiday". I informed them it was a Jewish holiday and one of them said "we don't carry that type of food". This is not my favorite place to shop, but it will do in a pinch. It's clean. It has OK selection& the people are super nice. I always check for specials and usually find something in terms of canned food or dry goods that is a good bargain. The produce is not that great for that I usually go to America's basket. This is not my favorite place to grocery shop. I've waited after a few trips to give this local grocer a chance, but tonight showed me that this place will not improve any time quickly. The primary reason is that the lines are typically slow as molasses (even when there aren't too many people in line). I also think the customer service is also a little lacking. The general mood in the store is a little blah. The only pro to this location is that it is just a 10 minute walk from our apartment. So it's great if we need something quickly. The parking situation is horrible. There are two levels to the parking garage but it seems like people never go down a level where there is more parking. Yes, there is the hassle of needing to take the elevator or stairs, but the circling and tightness of the upper level can make the most patient of people annoyed. In short, I would rather drive 15 minutes to Westwood to shop at Wegman's or to Quincy to shop at the Stop and Shop. The lines and customer service makes a difference. read more

The cashiers and baggers are completely untrained in bagging and seem to think the goal is to throw everything into bags as fast and sloppily as possible. If things get home damaged at least they made it - in my past two visits there was an item that was left out each time. That and the merely OK produce mean I won't be shopping here anymore, no matter how convenient it is. read more

Im giving this store 1 star because the Seafood and Meat department Staff are extremely pleasant and helpful. With that being said, i will never patronize this market ever again due to management putting the lives of the patrons in jeopardy! There is only one way of egress after 9pm due to them not wanting to hire security to prevent theft! i find this extremely upsetting! read more

I am shocked and dismayed at the lack of safety and general cleanliness of this store. The City of Boston has clear, specific mandates during this pandemic. It was almost like this store was looking to violate as many of these mandates as possible. Employees not wearing masks, more than 150 people in the store, employees not practicing distancing, etc. I do not blame the 17 year old kids working there, rather than the management. There are large visible gaps/ large cracks in the cement in the upper parking lot. This doesn't seem safe at all. BEWARE

I'll stop off here now and then when I'm passing by in my travels, but I think after my last experience I'm going to call it quits. It's certainly not the worse place to shop, however, there are A LOT of improvements to be made and it seems that this particular location is not in any rush to set higher standards; if they were, they would have addressed these issues long ago. Let's begin with the produce---the very first section you're greeted with upon entering the market, it's unflattering to say the least. It's always been disgraceful, however, last time I was there (yesterday) the pre-chopped Bermuda onions were watery and turning grey. The expiration date was 1 day away. The guy stocking this shelf literally put the almost expired onions in front of the new ones, rather taking them off the shelf completely. Who is training these employees? Next, the bags of Halo oranges. Brown spots, hello? Who would want to buy these? The bell peppers---all color varieties were graced with mushy soft spots. They certainly weren't fresh. Iceberg lettuce; wilted---again, who is setting the standard at this location? The seafood counter; why do I almost always have to flag someone down to get assistance here? Now, although it's a limited selection, I will say that I've never had any issues with any seafood I buy here, particularly salmon and cod. The prices; ummm, a bit high in my opinion. I get it, it's walking distance from the luxury apartments in Lower Mills so I guess the mentality is, "if they can afford to live there, they can afford to pay a bit more." Take that anyway you'd like. Parking; be careful and pay close attention while circling their parking lot. It's small, tight and people are unbelievably impatient. It is what it is and no one is expecting the market to tear down their lot and rebuild a better one. Just use caution, both when driving and walking in and out of the building. I will say, the employees are very friendly. Never once have I had a bad experience with anyone there. The people behind the counter, the cashiers---all wonderful. My qualms are with management, I think they need to run a tighter ship when it comes to the quality of perishables such as produce. Perhaps because this is the only supermarket in the area, they know that people are going to shop there no matter what because they don't have many choices. Why make the extra effort, right? That doesn't quite cut it with me. I'll probably pass on this location from now on and shop elsewhere. read more

For a time after the store switched from Shaw's to Star Market, the store was spotlessly clean. Now it's pretty dirty. Apparently, they drug the cashiers who for the most part appear nearly comatose. With a couple of exceptions, you would need a crowbar and a jackhammer to get a hello and a smile out of them every after you greet them first. One cashier always asks "Did you find everything you were looking for? Do you have any coupons? Would you like to take single serve items by hand (instead of buried in the bag)? Thank you." Staff should know that smiling and being pleasant is part of the job, whether it is in the job description or not. This is why Amazon is cleaning the clocks of retailers of all stripes - why pay more for the service you are not going to get? This is a failure of management. Amazon Fresh and Amazon Prime 2-hour delivery are looking better every day. (Note that I have no affiliation with Amazon aside from being a customer.) read more

The new management is what brought me back to give it a 3rd chance but the lines are still very long. The reason I am leaving (not returning this time) is because of the service desk. I made the mistake of going there on a Friday evening when people were cashing checks (get a bank acct!) and the young lady Ronj??? was very slow b/c she was talking to people just standing around. She couldn't multi-task (talk and ring) She would ignore people in line and cash checks of friends who simply walked up to the desk.
