There aren't many hobby stores that cover the variety that this store does. I've visited this store for 2 decades while other stores closed down. Pricing on some things may seem high but good luck finding the train or model stuff elsewhere. If you could find it online the freight would make it cost even more? Any of the bad reviews are clearly from people who aren't hobbyists! I've never had a bad moment in this store!! read more

This store has a phenomenal selection of model trains. Haven't visited the store in person, but I browsed their website and I was very impressed with it. If you need trains, I suggest coming here. read more

Poor customer service and unfriendly staff, you feel like you're inconveniencing them by looking through their store. An employee asked my son to not press the buttons on a toy to prevent the batteries from being worn out as I'm contemplating buying an expensive train set, that battery preservation on a cheap Chinese toy cost a sale and future sales. I will take my business elsewhere. Store is also poorly organized - a hobby hoarder. read more

I have been able to find many of the things a need here. I have bought multiple RC cars and many parts. They always have the information I need and can even answer questions over the phone! The customer service is also some of The best! The people are so kind and I've never had a bad interaction. They also have a huge selection of trains and tracks to set up at models! I love Star Hobby and I will most definitely be coming back. read more

Bottom Line: Family owned hobby shopping offering five-star service for three decades. I am egregiously remiss in reviewing Star Hobby. This is absolutely one of my favorite small, local businesses in Anne Arundel County and I can't imagine there is a better hobby shop in Maryland. I have been a Star Hobby customer for about 30 years. I started collecting LGB trains when I was about 10 so my early trips to Star Hobby were in their old Arnold locations (two of them) with my father. As a young adult I moved to California but now I am back in the Annapolis area and I love going into Star Hobby for all my LGB needs, uhh, I mean LGB wants. Aside from the impressive amount of LGB inventory they have competitive prices. While I go to Star Hobby to pursue my G scale railroading hobby, they have plenty of other stuff too including model railroading goodies in other scales, remote control cars, slot cars and general hobby stuff like adhesive and paints. The staff is always helpful and friendly. They entertain all of my questions about trains, LGB, train shows, etc. and they even help me load my car on my big hauls. read more

Awesome shop. Hard to find anything not a chain and still personable. Ignore the loony one star review

Family owned business, awesome hobby shop, great selection, adn if you need something, I bet they will get it in for you. They are always helpful. There is so much to look at here. We have got some amazing RC cars, trains, rockets, and parts here for all our hobby needs. Parking is great, staff is great, people are wearing face masks (thank you) and I will keep coming back. I hope they never leave! read more

We love to visit Don and Paul at Star Hobby. This shop is packed full, floor to ceiling with awesome items, models, trains, rc vehicles, paints, and supplies. Make sure you look up. They sell collections and I was able to get a brand new in the box G Scale switch tower that hasn't been made for 20 years. Wow Thanks! Thank you for keeping one of my favorite train shows, ECLSTS, alive. read more

I've been going to this store for many years since I was a kid and its only now that I have started to grow hatred for this store. For 7+ years now everything I've ever gotten from this have always have come broken even though they are marked brand "new" in box. The store's customer service is awful to, they only accept returns if the item is still in its original packaging. One problem issues only appear when the item comes out of box and is either put together or put on the track. If you are into trains they really only have Bachmann trains and O scale nothing else, no variety and the few other items they do have are overpriced and are sometimes about MSRP. But what really broke the camels back was that I bought a China Railway QJ from them and the frame distentigrated upon opening the box, this time they did accept it but the marked it as "Parts" and sold it still for $400+ which is disgraceful. All & all for one of the last Hobby shops in the State of Maryland this is the one I highly reccomend staying away from, DO NOT BUY FROM THEM 0/5 If you want model trains in the state of Maryland, you will either have to wait for the train shows, buy online, or go to Virginia, Delaware, or Pennsylvania to find good deals and more variety. read more

Just a wonderful, old fashioned, friendly hobby shop. Can't say enough good about Don and his team. When it comes to model trains, he's expert, and more than willing to talk you through a project or problem. Thanks to Don's expertise and advice, my son and I got his HO train elevated around his bedroom wall, and it's running perfectly. Thanks, Don! read more

This place is AWESOME! I went there for the first time today with my son & grandson. They have everything you could conceivably need for any kind of train layout. Plus model rockets and other gadgets. It seems to be a family run business. They gave my grandson a book from Bachman about trains. My son found everything he wanted in terms of track pieces, priced individually. read more

The owner of this store is a racists, he bad treat me, won't let us inside the store with my emotional support pet on hands. Was really hot outside to let my dog in the car, also I need it to control my anxiety, my pet go with me inside HOSPITALS, RESTAURANTS, ALL KIND OF SHOPS... and this person just saw us like we are garbage and say not welcome to my store, and I didn't want to argued with him, next time I got this problem I will call the police so people like him respect the rights of others. read more

I'm happy to give a rating of 5 stars. I put this in a different category than mass-market stores like Hobby Lobby & Michael's. There used to be a large number of hobby shops around like Star, but few remain. Even tough I am not really active in the hobbies, I find stores like this to be an excellent source of small tools and materials. Star maintains a large inventory. The proprietors are friendly, helpful, and do not rush you. My highest recommendations! read more

Super friendly staff. Have a huge selection and great prices. Definitely my go to place for trains. Something for everyone!

I want to say thank you very much for all your help in locating the now discontinued Model Master paints that we needed. Thank you for assisting my wife after hours and me the next day over the phone. You guys were genuinely helpful and took the time to look in your stock to locate what we needed and did not mind sharing your knowledge regarding the paint. I went in with my husband, who has become a regular costumer of this store, on a Saturday morning. He spent some $ as he did the weekend prior. First off, I want to begin with the store doesn't follow the mask mandate. None of the workers had it on, just myself and my husband. They were plenty of costumers inside without them as well. As my husband was browsing, I stood pretty much close to him and wasn't browsing as I'm not interested in such a store. I pretty much stayed on my phone so wasn't t really paying much attention to anything else, as I've been to this store a few times before. We didn't stay long and as we left the parking lot, my husband informed me that the older gentleman, the store owner, told his son "to keep an eye on those two" meaning us. Out of ALL the people inside the store, we were profiled bc we were the only non-white and maybe bc we were wearing masks-who knows. Of course my husband tells me this after we leave the store...no big deal, we're used to it, I guess. But I wanted to just point out how disappointed I am of this situation but not surprised. The son was a pleasant enough, but the father was totally out of touch and came off pretty blatantly racist. read more

Excellent selection in all major model train scales. Staff was super helpful and friendly.

It has one of the best selections of train stuff locally. Every time I go there the staff is polite and very helpful. Highly recommend this shop. Steve read more

If you are a G scale/Garden Railroader, you cannot afford to miss seeing this place!

Everyone was so helpful and the selection was insane! My husband was looking for a very specific NFL themed train and they pointed us in the right direction. We started for at least an hour and every question we had was promptly answered by the staff. I'm pretty sure the entire staff was family which makes shopping at a small business even better. Excellent service and fair prices. Thank you for all of your help Star Hobby! We will be back!! read more

I've not seen a hobby shop with this quality and depth of models in many years. Very many large scale Naval models, and the cars! Wow! Some of these I thought I would never see again. You don't need an excuse to stop in, and there is no excuse for NOT stopping in at the very minimum. I am building one of their models (USS Enterprise, aircraft carrier) with my grandson. read more

I should have written this review last year after I purchased a train for my son. This business is nothing short of amazing. I a day and time when family owned, customers come 1st, business are on the decline, Star Hobby is truly a STAR. Yesterday I went to buy a model rocket for my 7yr old. I had two 10 yr olds with me as well. They were all over the place...they were greeted with smiles. We looked at all the options for model rockets and my son asked about helicopters. We got all those ?s answered. They remote control airplanes. Spent time talking about that as well. We chose a small drone. The gentleman helping us, one of the owners, didn't push us in any direction, but did guide me in the best options for a your guy. He truly wanted us happy MORE than the sale. Incredible! Anyway, my debit card didn't work and they stayed open for me to hit an ATM and return. I am sure they saw the look on my sons face thinking we would walk away with nothing. They even threw in a "birthday present" for my son, an extra battery because he know my boys would "take turns" and when they did, an extra battery would reduce down time. I will return to Star Hobby for all of my needs and sing their praises to all that I know. read more

Unfortunately, I won't be returning to Star Hobby. I have been going there for a little over a year and usually have a pretty good experience. Actually the last time I was there, the owners son helped me out and was super nice and helpful. Anyhow, my 5 year old daughter and I stopped by to pick up a few things. While there my daughter picked up 2 small packs of animals figures and removed them from their hooks in order to show me. An employee told her, "don't mess up our stuff." I assured the employee that we were not messing up anything, and she replied to me, "we hang those on specific hooks." Wow. My 5 year old, under complete parental supervision, went from happy to feeling scolded. She was doing nothing wrong. She was simply showing her dad a $10 item that was on a floor display at what is essentially a toy store. I really couldn't believe how rude this woman was to my child. Well, I guess it's back to Klein's or ordering items online. read more
