Staples Ever since I was a teenager, I've had a weird fascination with office supplies. This has been passed down to my kiddo, and as such, we visit the Middletown Staples pretty often. As soon as I walk in, I always look immediately to the left, to see if the clerk I really like is there. Today he was, and today I learned his name was Jim. Jim is always helpful, no matter what. If I have a question about something, or can't find something, he will walk me over to it. When I was looking for an obsolete printer cartridge, he made sure to find it for me! But Jim is also a fantastic person, just all around. He puts a smile on my face every time I see him. He is genuinely happy, and it totally shows!! I enrolled for TSA PreCheck here and had an UNBELIEVABLY disappointing experience. First of all, the employee complained throughout the entire appointment about his job. I tried to be nice and empathize with him throughout, but it was pretty hard to get him to talk about anything else. Eventually, he asked me why I was enrolling, and I told him it was to use the discount (VERY IMPORTANT). When the enrollment was almost over, he asked me to give him my credit card and I comply since he must know what he's doing, right? Despite me explicitly saying I was enrolling to use the discount, he failed to put the discount on and processed my payment at full price. When I saw the charge was near $100, I kindly brought it up, thinking maybe there was a crazy fee that made a supposedly $50 charge into a $100 one. He proceeded to blame me and said, "You gave me your credit card and not the code, so now you are stuck." As the picture I provided said, the employee is the one that manually puts the discount in. At the time, I failed to bring that to his attention. In the end, he offered no assistance or solution, leaving me to fight for a refund on my own. The unprofessional attitude and lack of customer service made the entire experience frustrating and unacceptable. By far the worst customer experience I've ever had walking into a retail store. Regardless if you are overwhelmed by the TSA appointments and walk ins (even though you aren't the employee working that area), you should always be welcoming to customers. Appointments aren't mandatory for TSA and you really have no right stating "we will turn you away". It's the customers decision whether or not they choose to wait in line and you can't predict whether or not people will show up for their scheduled appointment slots. The manager and front customer service employee were so unwelcoming and failed to show me where to go to wait for TSA after being at the store for 40 minutes. In the past I have had all of my printing done at Staples. In my last visit, a woman who said she was a manager/supervisor in printing, and that she was the employee's immediate boss, treated me in a demeaning fashion. Her attitude was one I have never been subject to before by anyone at that Staples. My printer ran out of ink last minute and of course they didn't have the printer ink I needed, they never do so I brought my flash drive with the document I needed printed just in case. So, I Waited 7 minutes at the print department to get one copy of one document printed from the flash drive. No one was ahead of me or in back of me. It was just me and there were 3 employees walking around looking as if they weren't busy enough to at least even ask if I needed help. They literally didn't even know what I was in there for because no one ever greeted me at the counter. I specifically didn't say excuse me or anything because I wanted to see exactly how long it took to get service. A lady that had been printing on one of the printers previously behind me was done doing whatever she needed to do and then went around to a different side of the counter for assistance and can you believe one of the staff had the unmitigated gall to ask her if he could help her!!!!!?!??!? I almost jumped over that counter. One of the other staff had the audacity to look at me to see my reaction, as I was now wide eyed staring at them with a "like seriously" look and she said to the other staff, "I think she was there first." So that whole time she knew I was standing there as patient as a rock. The guy proceeded to help the other lady with her question and then came over to me. I'm on my positive thinking vibe this week so I decided I was going to be super happy, bubbly and fake, tell him what I needed, get it and then leave and never go back there again. I went to Staples today to send a package via UPS. The young man who assisted me was very friendly, competent and helpful. There was no wait at all for service. For the past three months, we have been dealing with a customer service nightmare with DIRECTV/ATT trying to resolve a billing error. Their phone service is mostly handled over seas by people who are difficult to understand, "drop" phone calls and if you google it, you will see that you cannot locate a number for corporate DIRECTV. So today when we went into the Staples store in Middletown, CT, we were stunned by the actions of the store manager, Christopher Abbott. I purchased a laptop from Staples approximately 37 days ago and the display was very poor. I went to Staples to see if their computer tech could adjust it to make it clearer. The computer tech, Dan Stapleton, couldn't have been nicer, however, the problem could not be fixed as it was due to the screen having a matte finish. Dan wanted to allow me to return the laptop for a different model, however, since it was past 30 days he could not process a return. The manager overheard our conversation as I was calling Staples corporate service to ask for an exception. Mr. Abbott with no hesitation authorized the return and I walked out of there with a better laptop and stunned because it is difficult to find a business anymore that cares about making their customers happy and retaining their service. Because of the way Mr. Abbott and Mr. Bransfield handled this matter, I will remember it, will tell my story to my friends and will do business with Staples' Middletown store in the future. Good deeds too often go unacknowledged - usually people only report their bad experiences - but my experience today gave me such a good feeling that I had to write about it. I will also look for a site on Staples web site to report how well I was treated because they need to know how well these gentlemen represent their company. read more

I went to Staples today in need of an academic planner. At first, I went to the aisle where they have all the planners but couldn't find what I was looking for. When I ask the first employee (Arianna) I saw around, she was kind enough to walk with me to the different sections where they might be. Arianna was lovely, easy to interact with and very personable. You can tell she cares about the clients and wants them to have the best experience. So I give Arianna 5 stars! Thank you for taking the time to make my experience enjoyable. I went into the store today with my 3 year old to kill some free time and grab a few things. The store was clean and well stocked. I was greeted by an associate and asked if I needed help finding anything. I also witnessed a manager talking to an associate. He was pointing out something he found troublesome and delegated the job of fixing it to the employee. The manager then grabbed a rolling ladder and started working on another project. Heck yes, I love seeing a manager lead by example! No discounted section today, which is fine, we got what we went in to find. What I did find in the section where the discounted items are is an unaccompanied pallet jack. I'm very glad my daughter was in the cart today because she would have run over and jumped on the pallet jack if she got a chance. Pallet jacks are never ever supposed to be left unattended on a sales floor and I was very very disappointed to see it. Our cashier today was Jim, absolutely a wonderful person! He gave my daughter a single piece of pink paper and told my daughter to write "I love you" on it and give it to me :) she did it as soon as she got home!! I honestly struggled with what rating I should give today. With as much as I appreciate this store and how well it is maintained, I know I would be remiss if I didn't subtract a star from my original rating on account of the pallet jack. It's not a big store, the back room is not a long walk, safe working habits are very important. That is why I had to rate with 3 stars today. read more

I am very unhappy with the printing department at Staples. I went in today to get some house plans printed that I had on a flash drive in PDF form. The associate was very friendly and started to work on my order when his computer locked up. He told me that he had to restart his computer and that it could take an hour or more for it to restart. Really!? Don't you have tech help? he told me that this has been going on for awhile and that they need new computers. Maybe they can find a deal on one with a service plan from Best Buy or something. So he can't print my drawings. He suggests that I go to another staples in newington. I tried to call to make sure that the store in newington was not having problems too. After being on hold for 20 minutes, I was told that they were too busy to help me today. So another call to the old SAYBROOK staples. Yes, they can make the prints. Back in the car to drive from Middletown to old Saybrook. When I get to the old Saybrook staples, the associate acts like he has never seen a flash drive before. He was finally able to find my print files Then he tells me that it will take a few hours to complete my print order. Why, I ask? Oh, he thought that I wanted them laminated and was explaining how it takes so long. No! Just plain old black and white prints on ordinary paper I tell him. Finally I get my prints and pay. 1/2 way home, I realized that the associate did not give me my flash drive back. I drove back and asked him if by chance he still had my flash drive in his computer. He looks at me blankly, goes and gets the flash drive (wait! Did he eject it properly or just yank it out?) Anyway, that was my 3 hour print ordeal at staples. read more

I went to the Staples in Middletown, CT to have 6 documents printed. Each document was one page, front and back. I waited an hour and 15 minutes while the agent received new walk up orders and printed those orders ahead of mine. Finally, my 6 pages were printed and I went home - only to find that they were the same document 6 times rather than my 6 separate documents. I returned to the store at 8:30 (the store closes at 9). For 30 minutes, the employee attempted to print my order but the printer continuously jammed. At 8:55pm, I asked if I should come back tomorrow or if I could get a refund so I could go elsewhere. The employee advised me to get the refund and to go to FedEX (which is 30 minutes away). However, I could not receive a refund because the registers were shut down at 8:50 - 10 minutes prior to store closing. This is unacceptable and Staples should be ashamed of the actions of this store. read more

If you ever want them to print a file for you, I suggest NOT going to this store. The employees in the print center lacked any amount of customer service. They act as if they are inconvenienced when you ask them to do their job. NEVER going there again, and I suggest you all take your business elsewhere! read more

Okay, who's the REALLY fat guy with the big mouth? I went in there the a couple weeks ago and was accosted by this sweaty, obscenely obese guy who insisted he knew exactly what I wanted. Which was odd, since I was there only to accompany a friend buying a computer. Anyway, this guy had a name badge on, but I couldn't for the life of me read it; it was just a bunch of consonants. No idea who he is, but he works for Staples, that's for sure. He tried to sell me a really expensive printer with a service plan. I told him to go away. He persisted. I grabbed my friend by the elbow and hustled her out of the store. That was A) Strange; and B) Unpleasant. I wish I could decipher the fat guy's name so I could report him. read more

Pretty amazing the turnaround in this store in the last few months! The staff are pleasant and patient, especially with computer questions. And I had a bunch of them. My understanding is they are under new management and it shows. I felt like I was in good hands with whatever question I tossed their way; I dealt with several employees who couldn't have been nicer to me. This is in stark contrast to the same store a year ago. Went to Staples on 9/4/18 and were checking out at about 5pm. There was one cashier named Kim, ringing slowly, and a line that wrapped around on itself. Another employee came over to help ring and mentioned the length of the line, just casually, not criticizing. As we were next in line and stood in front of her, Kim the employee proceeded to say to her fellow employee "I'm short, I can't see that line. I will leave RIGHT NOW. I don't care. I will LEAVE." Then she began ringing our order. While ringing, she used her earpiece microphone thingy to ask her manager(?) if she should stay until 6:30 instead of 6pm because she came in late. I assume the person said yes, to which she responded, "Fine, then I'm going on break" with this super-long line still happening. I'm not sure what the other person said in her ear but then she proceeded to tantrum again, saying, "I don't care. I'm going on break. I will LEAVE. I don't care. I will WALK OUT." All of this was taking place IN FRONT OF ME AND MY 13-YEAR-OLD SON as we stood directly in front of her awkwardly while she rang up our order. I have NEVER in all my years of shopping in retail establishments like Staples ever encountered such an insubordinate employee that was allowed to a) talk that way to a superior and b) talk that way to anyone in front of customers. I was pretty peeved at having to have a conversation with my 13-year-old son about what had just happened, and explained that that is NOT the way to behave on a job EVER. I am a teacher and buy heaps of supplies, and might have to rethink where I buy them if this is the kind of employee Staples in Middletown is going to hire and keep. read more

My son ordered a computer from the website to be delivered to his dorm. It never came. He called and was told to order it again, something had happened to the previous order. He ordered it again. After waiting another week it still had not come. I finally had to go to the store and bring it to him at college. There was also supposed to be a rebate from toshiba. Online order placed through Staples iPhone app showed order as going through and that it would be ready for advertised 1-hour pickup. Unfortunately there was a backend issue and the credit card transaction didn't go through. The big miss here is that Staples didn't update the order status or notify me via email that there was a problem. My son showed up to pickup the order with order number in hand and was turned away without anyone offering to look into the issue. I called the store and they merely responded telling me they didn't get the order and didn't take the initiative to help get it sorted out for me. It basically fell to me to contact customer support and spend 30 minutes with Rep to find what happened. They figured it out, admitted it was a problem on their end, they called the store and gave me a small credit. I had the worst holiday cards printing experience there! I went there on my cards pick-up date, but was told that the cards had not been printed yet. The service person told me she would print them now for me. Fine, that was ok with me. However, she printed my photo cards on papers, the pictures were so blur (even the text was blur), and the color was totally not the color on my file. Needless to say the quality, who would print holiday cards on a piece of paper?!! The employees there seem not very helpful with the cards printing. The girl there (on my order date) did not tell me anything when I told her I needed photo cards printing. Funny thing is that I was told the reason of the so poor quality printing was because of my file or on different window computers etc. How ridiculous it is! After wasting my time and trips, I went to Walgreens in Cromwell. I only waited for 15 minutes after I put my order in. My cards were printed on photo papers plus the color was exactly the same as in my file. Most importantly, they were not blur! Fortunately, the printing in Walgreens saved my day (after Staples ruined it). I will never never go back to that store again!!
