Last December I got a prescription for 2 pairs of glasses--distance for driving and close up for computer work. Since I waited until September to get the glasses I obviously wasn't in dire need. But after a vacation which involved a lot of night driving it became clear I should have the driving glasses at my disposal. A "trusted" local news personality appears on the Stanton ads hawking their ongoing "2 for $69" glasses sale. To me this seemed perfect. I didn't want to spend a ton of money on glasses I only need occasionally. So I took my prescription and walked in. The sales lady who approached me was friendly and helpful without being pushy. My wife and I went over several pairs of prospective frames, noticing there were none on display with the $69 price. I saw maybe two pairs at $79, the vast majority were $99 and above. So I said, "All right, it looks like I'll have to spend a bit more to get the glasses I want, but heck, even at $109 for two pairs I'm still getting a decent deal." So we agreed on a couple of frames--each getting a simple single vision set of lenses for their respective purposes--and headed to the counter to talk over the various options. The "helpful" sales lady proceeded to rack up the additional costs. The price for the frames did not include the lenses! Walmart and other similar shops include single vision plastic lenses with their frames. Then came the coatings for anti-glare, UV protection, scratch resistance...it sounded like good things to have, but I wasn't really sold on the need for all of that for my intended occasional use. The final tally came up at $378! Maybe that's not a bad deal in the grander scheme of eyeglass pricing, but it was five times what I had planned on spending when I walked in the place twenty minutes prior! When I reacted to this sticker shock the sales lady got nervous and began backtracking on the up-charges. When I said that was not within what I was planning to spend she asked what HAD I planned to spend. At this point it felt like we were at a sleazy used car lot. She brought the manager over, waived more special "deals" at me...it really took on a haggling atmosphere I cordially despise. From my experience performing in-home sales a generation ago I knew at that point Stanton has an extremely high markup on their products and services--otherwise they wouldn't have been so quick to drop the price. Anyway, the "best" they could do only brought the cost down to about $250. We walked out. After digging around a little bit online I found a service which is sending me a pair of glasses (the ones I need for driving) for $78. This includes the lenses and the coating for UV and anti-glare! And no additional cost for shipping. If I like what they send I'll get my other prescription filled there too, and write a review for them. In any case, I am done with Stanton and similar stand-alone optics stores. If I go back to a brick and mortar shop for future glasses I'll stick to the shops inside mall and big box stores. read more

After not finding any frames I liked at my usual optical store, I thought I'd try Stanton. The initial visit was successful and pleasant. I picked out two frames and was able to take advantage of their 2-for-1 deal. Though a little disappointed that they would take two weeks (my former store has never taken more than one), I was happy with the overall experience. When I went to pick up my glasses, the technician broke one of the pairs while adjusting them. They told me they were unable to get those frames again and that I could pick out another pair. I was extremely disappointed since the pair she broke had been my favorite. I spent another 45 minutes looking and found another pair to order. After 2 1/2 weeks, I got a call from one of the associates letting me know that my glasses had arrived, but had been broken in the lab. Again, they were not able to get the frame again and I could come in an pick out another frame. I told him that I was done and would not be back - ever. read more

I was a little surprised when I showed up for my appointment and was told that the eye exam was a done via Skype, but honestly I thought it was kind of awesome. Note: If you're not cool w/the Skype exam they have an option to see an in-house doc -- but the wait is longer and I honestly didn't feel that I was missing anything. When I showed up for my appointment, I was told there was no doctor there but they had someone in Florida that would do my eye exam remotely. None of my concerns were addressed, I was given contact lenses that I couldn't see with at all. After many discussions and a few days, they reluctantly refunded my money. I went to another eye clinic where a doctor was present. After a full exam, he gave me the correct prescription that was TOTALLY different from the one they gave me at Stanton Optical. And I can see! One eye was off by 1.5!! It wasn't even close. Never again. read more

I tried for the second time to buy the promotion that comes in TV 2 pairs for 59 and is a fraud, there is only about frames that are at that price and the don't fit, so after that you're pushed to pay 300 for 2 pairs of the other ones. And the nightmare continues. I purchased 3 pairs of glasses and 2 pairs out of 3 the lens is popping out of the frame. Not only do they have a really great manager, they have good solid workmanship. I can't believe this is happening. Just thinking about the place makes me sick, now I may have to go back? Update/Edit. I went back in, they put the lenses back in the frames. Fine, great, thank you. Less than 12 hours later, one of the lenses in my bedroom pair of glasses is coming out again. I am just not going back. This is ridiculous. These people wouldn't refund your money if their glasses made your eyeball fall out. I give up, I will wear them until the lens starts coming out more & becomes a problem. I admit, I like the frames I purchased there. But everything else has been a charliefoxtrot. I walked in a few weeks ago, telling them I was going to need multifocals, since I'm hurtling through middle age. This shouldn't be difficult. I got a prescription from the optometrist there, and a few weeks later, got glasses. They gave me the lecture about being careful on stairs as I acclimated, and I went home. But something wasn't right. After an hour, I realized that one eye was completely wrong, as in "I cannot read anything more than 5 feet away in that eye" kind of wrong, and my dizziness is not acclimation issues. So I put my old glasses back on, and go back to the store the next day. They give me a new exam, and bafflingly tell me that no, my distance prescription hasn't changed at all since my exam a year ago, and that the prescription I got a few weeks was just really, really wrong. So they say they'll cut me new lenses, and send me on my way. They cut the new lenses, give me the lecture about being careful on stairs as I acclimate, and they're much better. Except I realize when I get home that they're single vision, not progressive. So I go back again, and they look at my order history and tell me that they've *never* ordered multifocals for me. So why, exactly, they've given me the spiel about acclimating, I don't know. And then they charged me another hundred bucks to actually put the lenses I asked for in. As I said, I like the frames. But wow, three trips in two weeks to get what I asked for the first time? Given I wasn't asking for anything unusual, just bog standard progressive lenses? And they screw up my prescription AND my order more than once? That's a fail of pretty substantial proportions. So yeah, avoid. read more

Terrible experience. When I made my appointment, I asked if glasses would be done same day and was told they would be, as there is a lab on site. Total BS. After 3 weeks, I called to see if glasses had arrived yet and was told yes. Never received a call saying they were in even though when purchased, they said would be in, in 2 weeks and would call me. Then, I go to pick them up and could not see clearly out of them, now I have to wait another 2 weeks and hope they are correct. And to top it all off, they have your exam via televison with person off sight. Will never ever go again for exam or glasses. Hopefully glasses are correct this time or I will be getting a refund. I hate posting stuff like this but never go to Stanton optical! I went there a year ago to get new glasses. The eye doctor that wrote my prescription got it wrong and my glasses never worked right. I went back after about a year of trying these glasses on and off and they said they could not fix it. I paid for a new eye exam to show them it was wrong and still had to pay 80 more dollars to have the lenses fixed. I went back in the pick up the glasses and my sunglasses were fine but the regular glasses were not made right. They tried to fix them and bent the frames. They said they would send them back and call me when they were in. I started getting automatic calls and went back in and they hadn't even sent them in to be fixed. At this point I have paid 600 dollars and only gotten new lenses in frames that were already mine. This is ridiculous. I can't get anyone at corporate to call me back and I don't know if they will ever fix their mistake. I am so incredibly upset and disappointed. I feel like if you make a mistake it needs to be fixed. These people are doctors. They make mistakes, it happens. But make it right... read more

My prescription had changed and I needed new glasses. I've always required a strong prescription, and I knew it would be a little more expensive than typical. If you have a strong glasses prescription, you may do better going elsewhere than Stanton optical. The 2 for $20 was not available for me, and although they cut the price to the warranty and coating they strongly encouraged me to get, the amount I paid was substantial. Stanton's staff were not very knowledgeable about what frames would work with the lens I have, as I have had to go back three times to get the glasses I needed. Next time I get glasses, I'm going to do more homework. read more

Be aware!!! Stanton Optical is dishonest and does not tell you everything you need to know. I just ordered two pairs of bifocal (progressive) glasses from Stanton Optical yesterday. When I asked the store manager (Andy) about the differences between polycarbonate and plastic lens, he only told me polycarbonate lens is lighter (I had repeatedly told him I wanted my glasses light), but he did not tell me it has lower optical quality and it is mostly for people in sports. So I paid more for polycarbonate lens that I don't need. This place made me feel I have been cheated. I should have done my homework before I ordered my glasses there. I thought I could trust these "professionals", but I was totally wrong!!! Be aware - your wellbeing is not Stanton Optical's priority! Rather, making more money is their #1 goal! I was told it would take 5 days to get my glasses done. I plan to go to the store when they first open this morning and ask for a change to plastic lenses. But I don't hold my breath. I filled out survey and was going to leave it at that until I picked up my glasses, the person waiting on me took a long time to fix crooked frames. Since they felt ok I left. I'm not sure prescription is correct I'm trying them for a few days before going back. I now have received 3 calls telling me my order was ready for pick up. Had an appt last week. I was surprised that the doctor was on the tv and not in person. The staff was friendly but when I got my glasses one pair I can see and the other in my right eye i can tell is way off. I thought it because my vision has change and i need to get use to them but that not the case. I'm not sure how i feel about the whole thing. To not see a doctor in person to talk about things and than to not be able to wear the glasses I wanted is kinda frustrating. I am hoping I can go to them this week if I have time to have them fix it. I went to Stanton on the east side two times and was IGNORED both times. I wasn't greeted on either visit. The first time i was in two of the associated continued on talking with a single customer and never asked If I needed anything, and the second time the associates went on to help the three customers that came in after me. They take my $29.00 down, I have the eye exam, go pick out the glasses that's not 2 for 59,69,79,or even 99, then they say it will take 2 weeks for your glasses. Now, let talk about the joke of a "General Manager" Mr. White, he and I discussed the situation for at least 30min, the only thing he could suggest to me is that I go to the east side store, I couldn't go that day, I was already late picking up a client by 10min. I go to my car to make arrangements for my client in the interim I remembered the $29, I go back in and ask Mr. White the "general manager" about the money, he then says if you can't make it by today you loose the money. After waiting another 20min he called the east side store talked to the manager Jacob and he agreed to honor my monies. The east side those ppl were nice and kind, but I still couldn't find those glasses they advertised about even after picking 2 pair for 49.00. Terrible place! They are deceiving and just want your money. They said my glasses would take two weeks and my old doctor said he could do it in 2 days so I called to cancel less than an hour after my appointment and they said my glasses were almost done so I'd be charged half. They said they could rush and have them in two days too so I didnt cancel. 2 weeks later and still no glasses! I am forced to come back because my brand new glasses got a scratch on the lens. I have lens protection. I had to pay 10% of the new lens. They are less than 4 months old!! Yet another UPDATE... I brought my lenses in and they are replacing them again for the fourth time. The new store manager seems to be truly concerned about the product they are supplying, so, my hope is that things will turn around in regards to lens quality. ----------------------------------- UPDATE... I got replacement lenses LESS than six months ago and one of the lenses already looks like I use sandpaper to clean them. HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED. Please for all that is good... do NOT buy your glasses from Stanton. Waste of money and what's the point of buying glasses that don't last more than six months. Horrible. Horrible. Low, unacceptable quality. -------------------------------- I'm not a fan of negative posts about a business if it's not worth stating. It wasn't easy to "complain" about my lenses from Stanton, however, the customer service and support team was proactive and contacted me through YELP shortly after I posted this review. Ultimately, the store manager said he'll try to help me get this issue resolved and if that includes new lenses, they'll cover the cost. If I get another replacement pair of lenses, I'm a little cautious about having the lens glare filter option placed on them again. Bottom line is that Stanton has totally redeemed themselves from this consumers point of view. I wish more big businesses would tend to their clients like Stanton did with my situation. read more

My positive comments are that the people working there are very friendly, ambitious, positive people. The negative is that this is a classic 'bait and switch' operation. I went in, after seeing the "$69 special" 2 pair of glasses and free eye exam, offer. I figured it would somewhat more expensive, knowing that I would need progressive lenses. But, picking out lower prices frames should still make it a good deal. Went through the exam, picked out the lenses, and went process the order, and was very calmly presented with a bill for $527.00. That's right, Five Hundred and Twenty Seven Dollars. The very nice, young man didn't falter, didn't seem unsettled, or feel any explanation was needed for this HUGE difference between $69 and $527. What they don't tell you, is that the actual lenses aren't included in this pricing. However, I can't find even small print on their ads that say that. They say "2 pair of 'glasses'", not 'frames'. To me, this is complete deception, and illegal activity. I do NOT recommend this company. read more

I picked out two pairs of glasses on a Wednesday, the man told me they would be ready by Friday and it would cost around $300 (which is already ridiculous) they also said they would call when the glasses were ready to be picked up. Here I am, two weeks later- no word from Stanton as to whether or not the glasses are ready for pick up. I finally called them realizing how ridiculous it is that they aren't ready and I spoke to an incredibly rude employee who said he wasn't able to take my call (I'm sure there were other employees who he could have handed the phone to) and he would call me back when he was done with his customer. I can NOT say enough wonderful things about World of Variety. Especially the 2 employees that helped me the other day. They were amazing!!!!! Not only did they make my day but make the residents day at a nursing home day! My daughter who is in High School needs to do volunteer work and I went to World of Variety for ideas. Well, 30 minutes later, sweet Kay and Rhonda took their precious time to come up with the most creative idea for a Valentines gift to present to the residents. I went here because I waited too long to get an appointment with my regular optometrist. The eye exam was only marginally better than the eye exams they do for kids in elementary school. After selecting my frames I sat down with the customer server associate. He did not show me any options for lens material, didn't show me any prices. I asked for one pair with "extra active" transitions, and one with regular transitions lenses, again no mention of prices. The first time I saw a price was when he gave me the total - $799.00. I was tempted to cancel the order at that point but felt I had just wasted my lunch hour and decided to go ahead with the order, after all this was two pairs for the price I would get one pair at my regular doctor's office. Two weeks later I get a call telling me my glasses are ready. I go in, again on my lunch break, to get them. The "extra active" pair was in the wrong frame. The lenses had to be remade because the frames were different shapes. I wait another two weeks and finally have the frame I ordered with the lenses I ordered. Less than six months later, the lenses are scratched so bad I will be tossing the "extra active" pair in the trash. Very poor quality materials. I have been wearing glasses for over 30 years. I always clean them with water, anti-glare coat appropriate lens cleaner and a flour sack cloth towel. None of these should cause the lens coating to scratch like they have. I suppose I will be wearing the regular transitions lens pair as long as I can and then going back to my regular optometrist. I wish I had read these reviews before settling for Stanton Optical. read more

I had my eye exam and was given two different brands to try. I have narrowed if down to one I like, but I'm having headlights sunburst at night while driving so I called to schedule a follow-up. I come in for my follow-up appointment and the eye doctor is different than who I originally saw, but I've had that before at other offices so I don't think anything about it. He takes me into the room and starts talking down to me and saying that Doctor continuity is important and that he can't help me with my issue and that I need to reschedule with the original doctor. This was very unprofessional and very inappropriate how he talked to me. Not a satisfied customer at all. read more

The "buy one get one free" only applies to the frames. The cost of the lenses is not included in the deal. They aren't very upfront about it either - I didn't realize that's how it worked until after I had gone through the process of configuring the second pair and was about to hand them my credit card. I didn't go to Stanton just for that deal, and I intended to get two pairs of glasses regardless, so I'm perfectly happy to have gotten a free pair of frames. The lenses are usually the bulk of the cost though, so it's shady if not outright false advertising. Maybe I missed some fine print on their signage or something. I ordered my glasses in early January and was told I would get a call in early February when they arrived. Come March I still hadn't heard anything, so I finally called them. The glasses had indeed arrived, but no one had bothered to call me. I double checked, and the phone number they had for me was correct, so that wasn't the issue. I didn't say anything about the delay when I went in to pick up the order, and neither did they. No explanation, no apology. The person who did the final fitting of the frames was inattentive. It was obvious just by looking at the frames before even trying them on that they were bent and crooked. I had to ask him three times (x2 pairs) to straighten them out. My overall impression is that they are a bunch of slimy sales guys who couldn't care less about what happens after the credit card has been swiped. While I am happy enough with the end product, I won't be going back there again. read more

I am happy with Stanton Optical. I went in with a prescription from my doctor, found frames. Scott was very helpful and tolerant! After picking up both sets of glasses, I found that I was unhappy with one pair, Scott had me pick out a new set of frames, and sent out the new order. Absolutely no additional charge. I had shopped around at other places for lens costs and Stanton was very comparable, even against Costco. Your choice of frames and frame costs are going to vary anywhere. Considering I got two sets of glasses, I was comfortable with the price I was charged. Anywhere you go, you will find extra charges for things like transitional, progress no-line, etc. In fact, my husband went in and got an even better deal than I did. I purchased 2 pairs of glasses from the Madison West location. In about 7 or 8 months my primary pair of glasses were becoming scratched to the point that I could not wear them comfortably.I had purchased an insurance plan with my glasses and expected that the scratched lenses would be covered. That was not the case and they wanted to charge me more to replace the lenses than I paid for one complete pair of glasses in the first place. My recommendation is to not buy the insurance because apparently the insurance does not cover scratches. On second thought, it may be better to avoid Stanton Optical completely. This seems like a scam to me. They get you in the door by saying that you get 2 pair for $69.00. I do not know of anyone who has actually gotten this deal. In most cases by the time that you get the glasses that you need, the price is much higher than advertised and then they charge you extra for scratch resistant coating and anti-reflective coating that scratches easier than the lenses themselves, and lets not forget the cost of the useless insurance policy. I think maybe they should change their business name to Scamton Optical. It would seem more appropriate. read more

Hands down the worst place that I have gone for glasses. First of all, the staff seems confused and unorganized. I waited for long periods of time at every step of the process. Most frustrating was their inability to process my insurance claim, even after multiple phone calls. The claim, after 2 months, has still not been received by my insurance company so that I can reclaim my out-of-pocket expense. The glasses are o.k., but cost $300 (not designer frames either), not the 2/$69 that they advertise. I have never encountered these issues at either LensCrafters or the clinic. read more

Not happy with this place at all, I got 2 pairs of glasses, I was called my glasses were in, drove from Baraboo, got there and they only had one pair, when I asked about other they said I didn't order two, after me raising my voice to them, then it was oh ya they are taking longer. Went back down there two weeks later and no one can find my glasses. First they were at the other store and that store said no so I am guessing they just never ordered them. When I asked for a refund they wanted to give me a pair of sunglasses instead, what!!!! I ordered GLASSES . Not having fallen off the turnip truck recently, I was aware there was going to be no $69 for two pairs, but I was interested in getting a funky 2nd / extra glasses. I expected to pay more than $69. What I think is what "Danielle" experienced: I think they are short-staffed. Because I was driving 50 miles, I called and made my initial appt online and received online confirmation of my appt. All went well, with the exam and frame selections. The young man was pleasant and I experienced no pressure to buy any more than I wanted or needed, although doubling the cost plus more was easy. My glasses could not be ready prior to my required time to leave Madison so I went home without and arranged for a return time to pick up, after 5pm on another day (following week). Not trusting timetables for completion, I called the morning of the pre-arranged date for pick-up. Long rings and somewhat "rushed" female (not rude, just rushed) answered, who took my info and agreed to call me back to confirm that I can pick up. I was fully willing to wait until done to save on trips to/from. She called me back and informed me that "Yes, they will be ready by 5pm." If they were, this review would go way differently. We ALL know that, don't we? The more expensive pair was found after a search and I was asked to pick up in about 15-30 minutes. The woman assisting me was unable to find the 2nd pair. I was able to pick up the more expensive frame in about 45 minutes. The bright spot: discovered an interesting restaurant called FRESHII and my companion and I had very good eats! But the disturbing part was they were unable to locate the 2nd pair at all - not even in the preparation area - without much much searching. Explanation from the woman was that she does not typically staff the area in which I went to be fitted. However, there was a telephone disturbance with a customer and I (and whoever was in hearing range) could hear the person (male) carrying on a relatively harsh discussion with a customer. Once that was resolved (somewhat), the person who was on the phone took over from the woman who explained that it was not typically her station, and he too went looking for the 2nd pair. No luck. It wasn't ready. I said, "I would like to have it mailed to me because I did call this morning and was told that it would be ready. I would not have come 50 miles one way to pick up today had I not been confirmed" and he readily agreed: yes, he would mail it to me. This review is written because I had to call today to ask if they had mailed it at all & I am waiting for a response. I offered to come & pick them up, but I am trying to confirm that they had not mailed it so I am not crossing its path with a trip to Madison. I believe the staff means well. I was never treated rudely. It is, after all, next to a very interesting restaurant. And, I like my funky glasses. But no five stars from me. read more

My wife bought me a gift card for Christmas so that I could get an eye exam and glasses. My appointment was to be 2:30 PM today. I arrived 15 minutes early and checked in and filled out electronic paperwork. At 3:20 PM, 50 minutes after my appointment time, having not heard a single word from anybody about when I would be seen, I approached the register to ask for help. Nobody approached me for 10 minutes, so I picked up the general manager's business card and called the store I was standing in. As the phone rang, an employee finally approached me and asked what I needed. I explained that I had been waiting nearly an hour for my appointment and the employee told me there was nothing she could do about it. She said I would just have to wait. At that point, I asked for a refund for the gift card. To her credit, she gave me back the money. That is literally the only good thing about Stanton Optical. Do not, under any circumstances, give this place your money. What a joke! LensCrafters, here I come. read more

Once again Stanton over promises and under delivers! This is the second time that I have been told that a lens would be done by days end and it wasnt. To make things even worse, I was told by the manager on day two of waiting that they didnt have a lab tech in to cut lenses and it would be another day before the lens was done. 3 days to wait for a lens that I was told would be done in one day. This is not the first time that I have had problems with this sad excuse of a business.
