Great wine and great host. We stayed with our harvest Host membership. Was hard to get level, but was able too and had great views

You need a reservation to taste here, but we called and they were able to fit us in with another tasting they had scheduled. We arrived and there was a big house with a bunch of old farm equipment around and some campers on the front lawn. We followed the signs to the winery and entered the tasting room. This room smells like mold, or mildew. It was kind of strange. Also, seemed like this was their shipping room it seemed very full and cluttered. There were several people that looked like they had been waiting to begin tasting. So we quickly sat down and joined the group. First, I must say every wine we tasted at this establishment was fantastic. And the other folks in the tasting room were friendly and fun. The sommelier was also the vintner. It must be said, Roger told lots of stories that were a bit off-color. I don't think it's necessary to insult or put other people down to get a laugh. Laurie was kind and friendly, and he put her down several times in front of all of us. That part of the tasting experience was not fun. I have only spent less than an hour in his presence and I know I would not want to spend more time with him. He is a classic white male misogynist with a big ego. But if Laurie is running the tasting, I am sure you'll have a great experience. read more

Our stay at Stanger Vineyards was peaceful, restful and restorative. Wines were delicious, destination is centrally located yet off the beaten path and the parking areas provide nice views and easy set up. Our time spent with Roger and a few other couples attending the tasting was entertaining, informative and filled with laughter, good wines and memorable stories. Bought some wine to take home and would definitely recommend staying here. This was our 5th Harvest Host stay and they keep getting better. read more

We arrived at Stanger Vineyards as part of our Harvest Host camping program. What a treat!!! The views were amazing! Roger and Laurie were superb hosts. The conversation was delightful over an outstanding wine tasting. We were there with my brother and sister-in-law. Our favorite wines? The Exotic Cellar - The Strip by far is one of the best wines I've ever tasted! We also enjoyed the port Passovino Platinum, so much that we bought a bottle of each. Stanger represents some of the most outstanding wines that come from the Willow Creek District Appellation in Paso Robles. How do I know this? Roger, the owner, told me so. Seriously, he *is* right, but judge for yourself. Besides, you will love his sense of humor. His Cabernets are quite smooth, mature, and easy to drink. That's coming from someone who never considered herself much of a wine drinker two years ago. I thought I only liked Zinfandel. He made me realize otherwise once I tasted the really good stuff. Tastings: *Bench Cuvee 2010, (Syrah, Cab, and Tempranillo) *Master 2010 blend, (Cab, Syrah, Malbec, Tempranillo) *Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2009 We had the opportunity to indulge in the Stanger 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve in a blind tasting event (The monthly Cabernet Challenge at Hansen's Winery) in the Creston/Paso Robles area, and it was magnificent. Sure, it currently runs $120/bottle. But reflecting on that, we could easily pay that for a much younger wine coming from the more elitist areas of Napa. But the problem is, there is not much left of that one. For those who might prefer to pay the first installment of their electric bill this month, I am happy to say, the 2009 Reserve is solid, very much ready to drink at $75. We splurged and loaded two 2008 and two 2009 Cabs into our trunk...also we have solar and don't have to worry about electric bills. Stanger's own vineyards are located on the hillsides west of the Hwy 101. His one and only tasting room, located in a non-descript farmhouse on a small hill overlooking someone else's vineyards, is east of the 101 near the very rural, no pretense township of Creston. The only thing, literally, other than the picturesque vineyards you will find in Creston is a magnificent, locals' steak house and a few crumbling buildings. Buy yourself a bottle of fabulous wine, then mosey on over to Loading Chute for a great prime rib and consider yourself blessed. And while it takes a while to drive out there, the rewards are many. Not only are there many other wineries and vineyards to see, your blood pressure will significantly drop as you pass by vast farmland, grazing lands, an egg farm, picture perfect old barns, babbling brooks, gently rolling hills, and ancient, arthritic looking oaks draped with Spanish moss. Roger was talking about moving his tasting room to his westside property this last visit. Not sure when that will happen however. Frankly, comparing the Paso Robles area with Napa, they are far more approachable than Napa, the wines are priced noticeably lower, the tasting fees are manageable and sometimes non-existent, but most importantly, the quality of wine is as good or better. The entire wine experience is outstanding. PIT STOP/ P-STOP/ WINO-STOP ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A VINEYARD OASIS IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE- HWY 41 On a recent trip from Grover/Pismo Beach to Modesto, I decided to take the scenic route via Hwy 41 which cuts across Paso Robles wine country. It was really off the beaten path and was quite beautiful, but twisty turn and slow going. Fortunately, upon on a rise, I spotted a nice big house on a nice big hill, with a sign proclaiming wine tasting (on a Sunday yet !). I needed a bathroom break, to stretch my legs, and it had a gorgeous view. Therefore, we went up, and they had a cute little wine tasting room, filled with several nice people. I was game for wine tasting, but in view of the long drive, I had to use it like mouthwash, and then use a modern day .....................................SPITTOON!!!! (just like the old Chinese Emperors)!!! Despite all my spitting, the wines were quite tasty and they were all quite good. Alas, what a waste of good wine! For some reason, even though I did not taste it, nor spit it out, I did settle on buying the Special Pinot Noir Reserve {see Pic}, which was over a hundred, a dessert wine, and a Stanger hat. Have to support these little mom & pop vineyards, and besides Mr. French (the manager) was nice enough to give me a "Modesto" discount. Wify hates when I come up with "discounts" that really do not exist! I of course lingered and had a fun conversation with the manager (Mr. J. P. French) and some of his customers. It turns out, that the manager supplies a few restaurants in Modesto, with his wines (i.e., Surla's, Dewz, & one other?). One customer was a nurse, who worked before at a State Psych Hospital (that we will leave nameless), so we had some good Psycho stories to share. Anyway, it was a great break from driving, on a scenic hilltop, with a charmingly small Winery and tasting room. Incredible wines ~ Tastings are always wonderful and full of great information about their wines ~ the property has amazing views and an old historical cemetery, if you care to walk 5 or 10 minutes across their vast and beautiful property! we loved the views from any angle; road in was crazy, winding sharp switchback turns and driveway was dirt with lots of bumps, HOWEVER, the scenery, the wine and the people made this a 5star stop! My husband and I (along with our pups) went up to Paso Robles for our anniversary. We stayed on Camp 8 Rd; and were trying to stay away from downtown. We called to ask if they were open, and they gladly welcomed us in. Not only was their wine amazing, but Roger and Laurey were great host/company. My husband and I were dying of laughter long before the wine kicked in. We were unable to try the Pinot Noir but trusted that if all their other bottles were so good, we wouldn't be let down (I will update when we pop the cork), but seriously stop by if you can. We left with a couple of bottles, and some apparel. Also pet friendly which is always a must for us. I enjoyed the wine, the environment, learning about them and their family, while they learned about us! We will definitely be coming back here. read more

This is the only tasting room that Stanger is now operating. The Vineyard Road one is no longer open for Stanger wines. JP is a real fun host while tasting. Brash and full of life. We tasted: 2009 BENCH Cuvee. This is Syrah, Cabernet & Tempranillo, all from the STANGER Estate. We reduced their inventory significantly. 2010 MASTER Cuvee. All four of the STANGER Estate grapes Syrah, Tempranillo and Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. Our car trunk was getting more of that. 2010 Stanger Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve More bottles for the trunk The winery is a ways out of town in a beautiful setting in Creston. Dirt roads and our car was riding lower after our visit from the excessive weight of wine in the trunk. This wine is BOLD. Our wallets were significantly lighter. This is not discount wine. Come here only if you can imagine yourself spending $40 and more on a bottle of wine. If you can't, stay with buying wine with the screw tops at your local Albertsons' or Ralphs. read more
