    Wine tasting
    Tamara P.

Our family recently took a road trip along the coast, staying a few days in different little cities, and Buellton, a small city in Santa Barbara county, was one of them. We checked into our hotel and quickly looked online hunting through lots of hotel brochures and local magazines to see what winery options were available. The Standing Sun Wines had a large color ad in the local magazine with horse sculptures, so I just knew that it'd be the perfect place for us to go and enjoy some good wine while our daughter marveled over their horse sculptures and paintings. It's hard to keep a four-year-old entertained while doing wine tastings, so anything that made a winery stand out in a different way surely helped. Sure enough my daughter was very excited as soon as we drove up seeing their large bronze horse sculpture out front. There seemed to be a little construction going on inside, but that didn't stop her from excitedly entering this little winery. My husband and I did the wine tasting and ended up purchasing a couple bottles and some lovely gifts to take home for friends like their homemade lavender soaps, and dark chocolate chili MexiCali Design Tile chocolates. They didn't have any on display, so I opened up one of our boxes when we got home (just to peek) before giving them away, and was amazed at how intricate and colorful the designs on the chocolate were. Sadly some of them cracked during our travels, but hopefully the recipients still enjoyed the beauty of them. I hope that they tasted as amazing as they were presenting themselves. The wine pourer was very friendly offering a cookie and some water to our daughter to help keep her entertained then taking her to show off the horse gallery just next door. She also gave us a map and highlighted all the different neat things in the area that she felt we should see before leaving the area. We got a cute small town feel to this place and would definitely return the next time we're in the area. #62 / 100 Yelp 100 Review Challenge 2014

Our wedding at Standing Sun with The Steven Roth Band

I love Standing Sun. This review is 3 years overdue, but you'll see why if you keep reading... My boyfriend at the time and I first met John, the owner and winemaker, when he was with his dad serving wine at a local event in Buellton. We immediately connected with him, and he shared with us his vision for bringing more music to the area by creating a venue for bands traveling between LA and SF. We began going to shows after he launched his series "Live at the Winery" and we were quickly hooked (traveling about an hour each way, from the Pismo Beach / Five Cities area). I moved here after spending years in Chicago and New York, and this is the first place I found where the quality of musicians compared to what I was used to, and the experience overall was amazing (low-key, casual but special, family-friendly, and so much fun!). The caterers he gets are always cooking up something delicious, so we never eat before we go to a show. His wines have only gotten better every year--I love the LIVE Blanc for a nice, easy drinking cold white on a warm day. The Syrah Rose is the perfect "um, I'm not sure if I'm feeling white or red today..."--easy to drink, but not so light that you forget it's wine. And the GSM, wow. That's the perfect full body red to me. His prices are so reasonable for the quality of the wine it's hard to believe. We've been going down somewhat regularly for so long now that we've met a number of local "regulars" and always have a great time. But wait! There's more! ... We loved going here so much over the past 3 years, that when we got married last month (yep, same guy from the beginning of the story), we had our wedding here! (see for yourself: https://vimeo.com/163177098) After looking at some of the more typical venues, I am so glad we chose Standing Sun. We had a blast. Our guests told us how different and FUN our wedding was. And working with John and the Standing Sun crew was just amazing. They're the nicest, most accommodating, easiest group of people. We hired The Steven Roth Band who we first discovered at a Standing Sun show years ago, and Valle Fresh Catering (a frequent vendor for the concert series). It was the most meaningful, memorable, wonderful day of our lives. And extra special because of the long standing relationship we've built here. Thank you, John & Standing Sun Family!

Christine was so helpfull and the wine there was awesome we want to come back and watch a band play so pretty inside!!!

Don't let a disorderly patron impact your opinion of a great winery and LIVE music program. John Wright works very hard to make incredible wine and bring LIVE music to the Santa Ynez Valley. Come back again, enjoy the wine and the music, we look forward to seeing you. It takes a village to build and support the awesome program that John Wright has created. His vision and knack for finding talent and showcasing it in a unique venue has made the SYV a richer place. The LIVE in the Winery series is cherished and appreciated by all that it has touched. Take a moment to experience some hometown magic created by John Wright.

In my day…read more. I have been to so many Vineyards & even a few Farms too. But this place.. Is a twofer! Yeah, baby! A Vineyard AND a Farm! Beat that Napa Valley! Ok, Ok.. I know Napa Valley is like THE Mecca of Wineries, at least in California, & going there once before, I kinda understand, kinda. But is it really that much better? In my humble opinion.. Ehh. It was whatever Sure, I'm down dropping a nice crispy Benjamin to get that aged, vintage 2013 Cab.. But will I really care, or even notice once that bottle is depleted & I'm now ordering the 2nd least expensive Chenin Blanc on the menu just to wash away all my worries. (Suddenly, Every wine snob, wine aficionado & novice sommelier enters the chat) But, But Lance, it's Napa, How dare you speak against this Holy Land of all Superior Wine. And to that I say, I get it. I truly understand that not all wine is created equally, but also that not all of us have the BIG BUCKS to continuously drop $100 big ones on that prized Napa Cab. Hey, call me crazy, but to me, it's not just ALL about the wine that is produced, but more about the overall experience. It's the vibe. It's the way you are treated. & it's definitely about how they made you feel. Anyone else getting Maya Angelou vibes?? IYKYK ;) **All Wine Snobs have left the Chat** *Vega Vineyard and Farm has entered the chat* Alright team Vega, sit back, kick your feet up, & just listen while I brag a little about you. It was a BEAUTIFUL November afternoon just 4 days prior to Thanksgiving. We were heading back south from Paso Robles & decided to make a little pit stop before getting all the way back home. So my wife looked up wineries in the area that were kid friendly & Vega was at the top of the list. Walking in, we noticed that they had a little restaurant right at the entrance, so we went to put our name down for a table. Unfortunately, the wait time was a little longer than we wanted to wait, only because we had the kids with us, but the hostess suggested if we didn't want to wait, that they had more food on the other end of the farm in "Pops Place". Other than the wine itself, eating the food in "Pops Place" was probably the best move we could have unintentionally made that day. (I'll explain in a bit) So we slowly made our way towards the other side of the farm/vineyard & all I can say is, what a gorgeous property it was. The farm life, the outdoors, the weather, & I was with my Fam. It couldn't have been a better day! Once we got to Pops Place, it was like we entered into a whole new world. A huge area for kids with a jungle gym, stations for outdoor games & activities, benches to sit, even private cabanas you can reserve (not sure if there is a cost) & of course a little shack to order food and wine! So remember earlier when I said eating in Pops Place was probably the best move we could have made that day, Well here are 3 reasons why! 1) We ordered the George's Greek Gyro Pita w/fries (a beef gyro with lettuce, tomato, onions & tzatziki wrapped in a pita) and.. OH. MY. GAWDDD It was so flippin' GOOD! It was so good, that I didn't even have time to snap a pic, let alone set it down after taking that 1st bite. It was complete perfection! 2) Chicken Strips & Fries from the kids menu w/a side of ranch.. Let's just say, The kids loved 'em. 3) We washed it all down w/a beautiful, crisp, perfect for a fall day, 2024 bottle of their finest ALBARIÑO. & it was, EXCELLENT!! After we sat & ate, let the kids get out all of their energy, the fun at Vega continued. From there, we headed to feed the livestock on the property (lettuce sold onsite for a few bucks). There were Chickens, Goats, Pigs, Emu's & Sheep, and the kids and myself had a blast feeding 'em. After that, we stopped off at one of their gift shops to browse all of the fun stuff. Of course, we got the kids their requested candy! The staff we interacted with while at Vega were all so kind, welcoming & made us feel apart of the extended Vega family. Because of this, we will definitely be coming back next time we pass through. So, & this is where YOU come in! The next time you are passing through Buellton, do yourself, your spouse and your kids, if you've got them, a HUGE favor: Come check out Vega Vineyard & Farm and tell me that I was right!
