Premier Inn - View of the 'lake' - actually the county cricket ground after flooding!

    Premier Inn

I'm going to give this 5 stars for being a great Premier Inn, not for the grade of hotel…read more It's brand new, built by the river next to the Worcester County Cricket ground, which on my visit was completely underwater, as you can see in the picture! Rooms were a good size, clean and comfortable with all the usual facilities that you would expect from a Premier Inn - en suite bathroom, large TV, hairdryer, tea & coffee facilities (no biscuits though), choice of pillows for the bed, and 30 minutes free Wi-Fi. Minimal, but all you need for a good night's sleep - in fact, they do say that they will refund your money if you don't sleep properly. I was tempted to put this to the test as I didn't really get back to sleep after being woken up by the room upstairs returning at 1.30am, but that's not the fault of the hotel so it would have been churlish of me to complain. The check-in has two automated desks similar to ATMs or airline check-ins that are very easy to use, although there was a very helpful and friendly staff member on duty as well to help guide you through the process if needed. They also reassured me that the night watchman would keep an eye on the car in the car park and wake me up if the rising flood waters, which were already covering a third of the car park, threatened to engulf it. The bar and restaurant is in the building, and the staff both at the bar and at breakfast could not have been more helpful and friendly. I didn't eat the evening meal in the bar, but the menu looked OK and reasonably priced. Had I not had a prior engagement I would have eaten here quite happily. As usual at Premier, breakfast is extra but it's worth buying one as you can eat all you want from the buffet. There was a good choice of hot food to order, including vegetarian sausages (yay!). This might be because the place is new and they're trying to make a good impression (it worked!), but I hope it lasts, as this is a very convenient location close to the city centre when visiting Worcester.

We quickly perused the menu (skipped lunch so we were famished!) and placed our dinner order. The food took a while to arrive but we were enjoying our drinks and chatting, after several hours in the car driving from our home in the North. Everything was warm and tasty, and I really loved the vegetable variety. The cod and salmon pie was a bit dry and I could only think they must have forgotten the hollandaise as I didn't detect any sauce. Still delicious and stuffed full with fish! Only complaint would be the really dirty seats. Easy enough to order a few chairs or have them recovered.

This is the second time I've stayed at The Swan, the first being last June. I wasn't impressed with…read moreit then and gave it a (generous) 2-star review on Trip Adviser. Now, however, it is under new management (again) and has improved considerably. It's difficult to know how to grade it, and I really wanted to give it 4 stars as I did enjoy my stay, but on the other hand.... 'meh, I've experienced better', which would be 2 stars. So I've compromised and given it three stars this time. Let's start with the rooms. These are lovely, really nicely decorated and appointed, and quite spacious. Each has a fruit theme, and this time I was in the Pear room. The bed was comfortable and warm, and the en-suite was large with a bath and shower. The only minor downside was the small amount of black mould in the grout of the tiles around the shower. It's so unsightly and really spoiled the overall impression of the room, and it's not difficult to get rid of with the appropriate cleaner. This room was also located at the back of the inn and was over the cooling plant, so there was an almost subliminal vibration that even extended to the bed at night, making it difficult to get to sleep. It was barely noticeable at a conscious level, but subconsciously your body is expecting an earthquake or other imminent disaster and refuses to relax. The cooler did switch off eventually so I did manage some sleep. It's an old building dating from the 18th Century, so you have to expect that there will be some stuff like this going on and just deal with it. But I think I will ask for a different room next time. On to the bar and restaurant - the bar area is great, very cosy with old timbered beams everywhere - it does look the part. They have a good selection of ales on tap, including one of my favourites 'Doom Bar.' There's a huge beer garden outside with children's play area, and it's ideally located in the centre of the village next to the green, so there's plenty of space to spread out in hot weather. It's a popular place with locals and is well-supported, but then again it is really the only game in town in this small village. The food menu has been downsized since my last visit, which is no bad thing really as they clearly could not support the size of menu that they used to front. Now it's more basic pub fare - fish and chips, steak pies, burgers and the like - and although it's not going to win any prizes in the haute cuisine stakes, it's certainly more manageable and is good homely grub. I had a wild mushroom soup, which I suspect may have had a canned variety as a base, followed by a chick pea and sweet potato korma, which came with rice and a very small nan bread, and was very tasty. I was just glad that they did have a few veggie dishes to choose from. The dessert was a rather interesting-looking apple and blueberry pie, and it really was a pie! It looked like a large pork pie and came with a separate jug of custard - delicious. The new staff were lovely and very friendly - they've only been running it for 6 weeks and are clearly keen to do their best for the place. I wish them well. So well done The Swan - I'm glad to see improvements in the place and may it continue to do so.
