I've had drinks and/or dinner at The Lygon Arms multiple times over the years and this last meal really felt as if they had stepped up their game. The food was delicious and the "dining room" felt quite festive with all the Christmas decorations up. Service was prompt and friendly. Thumbs up!

Mrs G and I were guests at the wedding of good friends and neighbors and (since Mrs G had experienced this hotel before when she and the same neighbor and friend visited for a spa treatment and lunch) we decided to spend 3 nights here. I am so glad that we did! Read on. The hotel in on High Street in the idyllic Cotswolds village of Broadway. We pulled up, never saw a spot to park the car (nor did I see the small sign that said "Valet Parking Only") so stopped by the door and started to enter as a courteous staff member asked to help us with our bags. He helped us up to our room (thank goodness - being a bit of a maze in that beautiful old building), after we had been helped by the two friendly young ladies at the registration desk. Everywhere you look is history and class. Our room was spotless, the bed comfortable, the bathroom to be honest was a bit on the small side but that seems like a small sacrifice for the experience. The bathroom comprised a bath with shower, sink and toilet. Plenty of towels and toiletries. The room was bright with a nice view over the internal quadrangle - where we would love to sit in summer. The blinds can envelope you in darkness to guarantee a good nights sleep. Everywhere you look you seem to find another gorgeous little room with an open hearth crackling, history, engravings and artwork - and several little nooks where you could enjoy a drink, coffee or snack from the seeming plethora of cosy bars. Lots of smaller meeting rooms (it seemed) including a couple that we used for the "Wedding Breakfast" (strange old English term for reception) and the hours long dance and gathering afterwards. There seem to be staff (all helpful friendly and just plain "nice") everywhere to assist and serve you. One tiny suggestion - please add a staff member (or two) to making up rooms so that your room can be serviced earlier... Bonus - the valet parking? - free! The gentleman helping us unload and load (and bringing the car) was beyond helpful and courteous. Please ignore the 1 star review by Alex D in 2015. Firstly the hotel was under different management then and secondly the comments are about the restaurant which is reviewed separately on Yelp (my review coming soon - his complaint was that he was not allowed in wearing jeans - now some of the servers wear tidy jeans - yes it is up market but NO not snooty!) Two big thumbs up Review #86 2019

We had a really lovely experience at the Lygon Arms. It's in the middle of the Cotswolds and in the beautiful little town of Broadway. You can see the main hotel off the high street and if you walk in the back there is outside seating and it's SO LOVELY! Especially when the sun is setting and the lights are just coming on. The wait staff was really kind and attentive, and when we walked inside to use the bathroom the interior is SO COOL! It's like... super old timey British. I don't know how else to describe it. Anyway, the food that stood out to me was the octopus salad (really nicely grilled and yummy) and the sticky toffee pudding. The location is great to begin with because it's very fun to walk along the high street. But this is certainly a nice place to enjoy the ambiance and a good proper English meal.

Very nice wait staff and the meal was great! Don't forget to have after dinner drinks in the bar so many good offerings.

Here are my ratings: Location (5 Stars) - Right downtown and an easy walk around High street. Very dog friendly and very nice front desk staff. Bar (5 Stars) - Gorgeous inside bar area, which we saw both from ground level and via the upper catwalk to our room. Service was friendly and engaging. Patio (5 Stars) - Steller outdoor patio on a very nice day. We relaxed with our drinks and never wanted this experience to end. Dinner (5 Stars) - As fine a dining experience as we had during our week in the Cotswolds. We took dinner in a very nice dining room with comfortable seating and excellent meal choices. Breakfast (5 Stars). Breakfast was in the dining room and featured good selection, nice dining room, timely service, strong coffee, good portions, and tasty choices. You can't do much better than that. Accommodation (4 Stars). One thing we found about historic UK Inns is that climbing up the stairs with luggage is required. Yes, they'll help you, but we're starting to get a little old for this. The room was a big small, but we really appreciated having both a bedroom and sitting room, which accommodated our different sleep schedules.

The bathroom was on the smaller size but clean. Our room was stocked with tea and a tablet where you could order everything from hot milk, room service, to dinner for your dog. The house itself is really spacious with lots of rooms to lounge and enjoy a drink or tea. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to enjoy the spa or other amenities. We enjoyed a five course dinner at the Portager which was excellent. The restaurant over looks the garden and is just lovely. Make a dinner reservation at the same time you book your room to avoid any disappointments. The portion sizes were tiny so don't come hungry. Breakfast the following morning was also a treat. They had all the standard fixings (pastries, fruit, cereals and juice). I ordered waffles from the hot menu but found they were rock hard, definitely pass. I would highly recommend Dormy if you wanna treat yourself to a rustic cotswolds retreat.

All the staff was attentive and engaging. Every morning at breakfast Alex was so attentive to our specific dietary needs and tolerated our weird American humor! The morning we left I was having a little tummy trouble and she made me a hot tea with fresh ginger. The spa was amazing! We started every morning in the sauna and salt room. We were sad to leave and will definitely return.

The bell people were either too small or frail to help us bring our bags up the stairs. There is not a lift. The rooms need refreshing -badly. Everything including the service seemed "tired" - not quaint or charming. The bar service was inconsistent. Sometimes, the drinks were phenomenal and other times they were subpar. The dining experience was lackluster and the food was average. The chef and staff have changed since our last experiences and it shows in every detail. Would seriously reconsider staying here. What a shame, it had such charm and vibrancy that it is now lacking.

The lobby lounge area was very quaint and cozy for tea. We sat on some cushy couches to enjoy. The tea selections were plentiful and several options for the tea food as well. The service was also on point. The food was just ok - one of the finger sandwiches was dry around the edges, so it had clearly been pre-cut and sitting out. The fruit scone was also extremely dry, burnt, crumbled at the touch. Surprising and unfortunate. One of the sweet options on the top rack was stuck to the plate so it exploded as we tried to placate it and we didn't really get to eat it. Food was 3 stars at best but the ambiance was key. To note - there was a 10% service charge auto-added to our bill and parking is free.

A regret of our trip was not having enough time to really explore the grounds more. Small but smartly decorated suite that somehow managed to be modern, cozy, luxurious, and evocative of the rural throwback fishing theme. Excellent amenities including Cotswold woolen blankets in the rooms and high end soaps and shampoos. Great, hearty breakfast service. High quality of food and service at dinner too. Impeccable service at the front desk. Sadly, with all they're doing right, there were still a few rough spots: Iffy wifi that only worked in the lobby. Activities that were highly touted on their website and were a main reason for our staying there, only to be booked solid all weekend. (They had slots for a paltry six individuals per hour, limited hours, and some of them were age restricted. Maybe some extra capacity could be added on busy weekends?) Rooms with no closets, and very little storage at all. (That was common for the rooms we booked on our trip, though. This would not be a concern for a couple on a weekend getaway, but it was challenging for a family on a longer vacation.) Overall, however, we loved our stay here, would recommend it and would return ourselves.

Our cottage, No. 30, was about 180 pounds B&B, VAT included. It was larger than most rooms, with a living area, sleeping area with king bed (a bit soft), a small sitting room and a front patio overlooking the back of the lodge. Stow may not be the quaintest or most charming of the Cotswold villages, and the main Square is being taken over by a larger and larger parking lot. However, it is handy to be able to easily walk to attractions such as the medieval St. Edward's Church, Grade I listed with its remarkable door flanked by huge yew trees, and to places to shop and eat and drink. Stow is handy to visit other nearby villages, if you have a car or can spring a pretty penny for a hire taxi. As to Stow Lodge, it is the kind of places that just looks and feels very, very English. Indeed, although it was high season for tourism (August 2023) nearly all the guests appeared to be British. Besides us, there was one apparently American family and one evening a group touring in vintage Bentleys stopped for the night (one of the Bentleys, a 1929 4 1/2-liter, was owned by an Australian.) This Bentley surely would bring 300,000 pounds or more if offered for sale. Most of the guests, like us, were, shall we say, older? Nearly everyone staying the the small lodge had dinner in the very English dining room (think roast beef on Sunday, fried whitebait for appetizers, and roast lamb). You could have a drink in the bar or the in the sitting room with overstuffed leather sofas, but dinner started exactly at 7 pm. The room came inclusive of a full English breakfast, with eggs either fried, scrabled or poached, served promptly at 8 am. Service at this family-owned inn was friendly, cheerful and efficient. Everything was very clean, and the lodge is well run.
