Moreton-in-Marsh isn't the liveliest of towns but once I found White Hart Royal I was happy. First, there's "Snug Bar", a low-ceilinged, fireplaced, bar/eatery that welcomes dogs inside and feels a bit like one has stepped back in time. The menu here had things not featured elsewhere in town (i.e. risotto) though the Fish & Chips were the star. Snug Bar, I think, is one of the best dining options in M-i-M. After hanging out here for a good long while I used the restroom and found another room, off the hotel's main dining room, where they had games and books (and bar service). An opportunity to play Scrabble late into the evening proved a win as did the nearby outdoor patio space where one could probably do any of the things I'd already done here at that point. I failed to dine in the hotel restaurant or sleep in a hotel bed but knowing that I killed a whole evening here doing things I enjoy easily made me a fan.

Stayed here sept 2022 on hiking thru Cotswold's experience with 9 friends from U.S. Hospitality was fabulous, rooms were great, food was superb...could not have asked for better accommodations...staff was excellent...we would give extra stars if we could. rlw

View of room doesn't do it justice ! So nice and we only stay at top places , Marriott, Hilton etc .

That Lunch was around 3 PM and we very much appreciated that their kitchen was open all day. We were seated within a nice cozy room by a fireplace, which allowed us to settle in, relax, and talk about our walks ahead. Very few people come to the UK for the food (or the weather) and in hindsight we had several solid, albeit somewhat unremarkable meals during our 2 weeks in the UK. Our Redesdale Lunch version was a Longhorn Beef Burger for both of us, plus white wine for Gayle and a wee pint form me. It was the right choice at the right time, and part of a very enjoyable meal together. A few UK cultural observations: 1. Most restaurant tabs have an optional service charge attached, usually between 9 and 13%. As we live in a tipping culture, we accepted the charge, paid our bill and moved on. 2. Most tap beers are at room temperature and I favored the bitter version, as this version was a bit darker and robust. If I wanted more, Guinness was usually available. Beer at the bar is often dispensed via a pumping action vs. a straight tap. A given Pub would also feature a local set of bears or ones representing the chain owning them. 3. There is practically no pressure to turn tables in a restaurant or be in any hurry to have you pay the tab. A lot of the time, we got up ourselves and found the person to pay.

The idyllic, remote countryside setting was hard to resist. The hotel itself is beautifully decorated in traditional English country style and the grounds are beautifully kept with natural English gardens in both the front and back. Our room was very clean and well-appointed with little biscuits, tea and a lovely big tub. Why not five stars? 1.) we had brought local cheese and crackers with us to enjoy in the front garden for a little picnic and were told we couldn't have "outside" food there and would need to make purchases which was off putting given the great setting and that there was literally no one else out there. 2.) The food in the restaurant is *so* delicious but the atmosphere could really use some work. It felt like we were in a sterile cruise ship dining room with awkward music playing and near silence. It felt like this room had a different decor style from much of the remainder of the Manor. Some simple tweaks like a change of music and different wallpaper/chairs could make the dining room experience 5 stars.

Our cottage, No. 30, was about 180 pounds B&B, VAT included. It was larger than most rooms, with a living area, sleeping area with king bed (a bit soft), a small sitting room and a front patio overlooking the back of the lodge. Stow may not be the quaintest or most charming of the Cotswold villages, and the main Square is being taken over by a larger and larger parking lot. However, it is handy to be able to easily walk to attractions such as the medieval St. Edward's Church, Grade I listed with its remarkable door flanked by huge yew trees, and to places to shop and eat and drink. Stow is handy to visit other nearby villages, if you have a car or can spring a pretty penny for a hire taxi. As to Stow Lodge, it is the kind of places that just looks and feels very, very English. Indeed, although it was high season for tourism (August 2023) nearly all the guests appeared to be British. Besides us, there was one apparently American family and one evening a group touring in vintage Bentleys stopped for the night (one of the Bentleys, a 1929 4 1/2-liter, was owned by an Australian.) This Bentley surely would bring 300,000 pounds or more if offered for sale. Most of the guests, like us, were, shall we say, older? Nearly everyone staying the the small lodge had dinner in the very English dining room (think roast beef on Sunday, fried whitebait for appetizers, and roast lamb). You could have a drink in the bar or the in the sitting room with overstuffed leather sofas, but dinner started exactly at 7 pm. The room came inclusive of a full English breakfast, with eggs either fried, scrabled or poached, served promptly at 8 am. Service at this family-owned inn was friendly, cheerful and efficient. Everything was very clean, and the lodge is well run.

I had a breast of duck with roasted potatoes and green beans. Breakfast(off menu) was included with our stay. I had the Full English, a pot of coffee juice and toast. The waitstaff was great. Hotel also has a bar and serves afternoon tea that you can enjoy in the fireside lounge. I definitely recommend the Stow Lodge Hotel.
