Wheatsheaf Inn is a lovely weekend retreat tucked away in quiet Northleach. Touted by Conde Nast Traveler as a "Top 101 Hotel in the World", no detail is overlooked in the design and cuisine. This honey-coloured English countryside inn is housed in a vine-covered 17th century cottage with impeccably designed interiors. Dim lighting, espresso leather seating, hardwood floors, subdued blue walls adorned with oil portrait paintings and accented with white crown molding, and cozy fireplace give this upscale British restaurant and bar a regal yet relaxed atmosphere. The famed and bursting with flavor deviled kidneys are a must try. The lamb, sirloin, and hake are delicious comforting eats.
The staff was charming and polished in appearance. However, a bit lacking in experience and hospitality. The first night, the cheery host seated us in the 'VIP room' with a secluded table. We felt special and pampered. The next day, we arrived sans reservations and surprise, we were seated at the same table. Apparently, the host did not remember us because he said the exact, same corny line to us about the 'VIP room'. My husband requested to be seated in a more 'exciting' area and the request was denied. The second time around, it was busier and we were rushed through cocktails and a multiple course dinner. Unfortunately, this visit lacked the sparkle of the first night. I received a 'deer in the headlights' look when I inquired about the oyster varieties and description of the menu offerings.
Bottom line: The Wheatsheaf Inn in Northleach is worth a stop while touring The Cotswolds for a lovely meal at this lively establishment that is bustling with visitors and 'prim and proper' regular locals. read more
