Writing a review about this place was quite difficult because there are some aspects of this place that are 5 stars and some only 2. For ambience and character this place gets 5 stars, for wine list this place gets 4 stars for food this place gets 3 stars and for service this place gets 2 stars. For adding a 10% service charge automatically to the bill for poor service gets 1 star. It started off really well when 6 of us arrived for dinner and the menus looked fabulous and when the daily specials were announced I thought we were in for a treat. The first wine I selected for the night was not available and so I selected another wine which sounded good. The wine list was extensive and they had a wide array of wines from a number of different countries old and new world wines. I decided to order two starters instead of a starter and a main. I had the scallop ceviche which sounded fabulous but when it arrived it barely had any scallops mostly tomatoes and avocado and it was an ok dish. I ordered the Risotto special of the day with mushrooms and truffles and when the risotto arrived it looked excellent but the rice was a little bit too al Denne for my liking and the flavour was only ok and there were no truffles to found only truffle oil (which I think is cheating). The pear, rocket and blue cheese salad side was really good and the Lyonnaise potatoes were also delicious. The service through the night just got worse and we sat for quite a long time with no water or anyone checking up on us. There was quite a few staff at the place but the service seemed very disorganised and random. Eventually I flagged someone down to order dessert and we shared a Marathon Pudding with Salted Caramel Ice-cream and Orange Marmalade Pudding. The Marathon pudding was quite inconsistent as we had two of those and one had a nice gooey liquid centre and the other one had none of that. The ice cream had no real salted caramel flavour and it was ok. The Orange Marmalade pudding on the other hand was excellent and the flavours were fabulous. That was the best dish of the night in my opinion. Coffee here was also good. Maybe people in England don't mind but I get really annoyed when a place includes a 10% service up front with the bill. I don't have a problem paying more than 10% for good service and great food but in this instance I would not have done so. This is a practice that needs to stop as it is awkward asking for something to be taken off the bill. All in all it was a very mixed experience and once again trying to eat in place during a busy night for the first time is not a great idea but if the place is organised and well run then it should not matter. I may come back there again as the ambience is great and the wine list is fabulous but for the food and service I would probably not return here again. Not one of us said it was a great meal, six out of six said it was ok.

Wheatsheaf Inn is a lovely weekend retreat tucked away in quiet Northleach. Touted by Conde Nast Traveler as a "Top 101 Hotel in the World", no detail is overlooked in the design and cuisine. This honey-coloured English countryside inn is housed in a vine-covered 17th century cottage with impeccably designed interiors. Dim lighting, espresso leather seating, hardwood floors, subdued blue walls adorned with oil portrait paintings and accented with white crown molding, and cozy fireplace give this upscale British restaurant and bar a regal yet relaxed atmosphere. The famed and bursting with flavor deviled kidneys are a must try. The lamb, sirloin, and hake are delicious comforting eats. The staff was charming and polished in appearance. However, a bit lacking in experience and hospitality. The first night, the cheery host seated us in the 'VIP room' with a secluded table. We felt special and pampered. The next day, we arrived sans reservations and surprise, we were seated at the same table. Apparently, the host did not remember us because he said the exact, same corny line to us about the 'VIP room'. My husband requested to be seated in a more 'exciting' area and the request was denied. The second time around, it was busier and we were rushed through cocktails and a multiple course dinner. Unfortunately, this visit lacked the sparkle of the first night. I received a 'deer in the headlights' look when I inquired about the oyster varieties and description of the menu offerings. Bottom line: The Wheatsheaf Inn in Northleach is worth a stop while touring The Cotswolds for a lovely meal at this lively establishment that is bustling with visitors and 'prim and proper' regular locals.

Great little English countryside pub and restaurant. Food was amazing. We would definitely return if we are in the area again.

    Stow Lodge Hotel

We chose Stow Lodge in Stow on the Wold for our stay in the Cotswolds in part because it had ground…read morefloor accommodation available, in a cottage across the lawn from the main lodge, which was formerly the Rectory of a well-known church, and partly because the lodge was set back from the main square, yet near shops, restaurants and pubs. Our cottage, No. 30, was about 180 pounds B&B, VAT included. It was larger than most rooms, with a living area, sleeping area with king bed (a bit soft), a small sitting room and a front patio overlooking the back of the lodge. Stow may not be the quaintest or most charming of the Cotswold villages, and the main Square is being taken over by a larger and larger parking lot. However, it is handy to be able to easily walk to attractions such as the medieval St. Edward's Church, Grade I listed with its remarkable door flanked by huge yew trees, and to places to shop and eat and drink. Stow is handy to visit other nearby villages, if you have a car or can spring a pretty penny for a hire taxi. As to Stow Lodge, it is the kind of places that just looks and feels very, very English. Indeed, although it was high season for tourism (August 2023) nearly all the guests appeared to be British. Besides us, there was one apparently American family and one evening a group touring in vintage Bentleys stopped for the night (one of the Bentleys, a 1929 4 1/2-liter, was owned by an Australian.) This Bentley surely would bring 300,000 pounds or more if offered for sale. Most of the guests, like us, were, shall we say, older? Nearly everyone staying the the small lodge had dinner in the very English dining room (think roast beef on Sunday, fried whitebait for appetizers, and roast lamb). You could have a drink in the bar or the in the sitting room with overstuffed leather sofas, but dinner started exactly at 7 pm. The room came inclusive of a full English breakfast, with eggs either fried, scrabled or poached, served promptly at 8 am. Service at this family-owned inn was friendly, cheerful and efficient. Everything was very clean, and the lodge is well run.

We had a wonderful but too short of a stay at the Stow Lodge a hotel. Located in the town center…read more(big parking lot) this rustic Lodge has the most courteous staff we have encountered on our trip throughout England. The room was clean and well appointed, the bed was very comfortable and the bathroom seem to have been updated. Dinner at the Hotel restaurant was delicious. I had a breast of duck with roasted potatoes and green beans. Breakfast(off menu) was included with our stay. I had the Full English, a pot of coffee juice and toast. The waitstaff was great. Hotel also has a bar and serves afternoon tea that you can enjoy in the fireside lounge. I definitely recommend the Stow Lodge Hotel.
