The hotel is very racist. I wouldn't reco it for anyone as they will make you frel worthless. They…read morehave horrible service and they also do not hire people of colour. Why stay or work somewhere where segregation plays a huge role?

My wife and I got married here, and returned this past week for a nights stay, and a meal in the…read morerestaurant. It is a genuinely beautiful place, in a spectacularly old building, with beautiful log fires to enjoy. The room we had was great - the bridal sweet both times. Really large (two rooms), and an outstanding bathroom. The only slight flaw is the bed (four poster), which is both incredibly high, and incredibly small. I believe it's a queen sized bed, but as someone used to sleeping in a California King, it seemed claustrophobic, especially when the drop if you were to fall out of bed would be so far. The restaurant was good, if slightly pretentious. Serving food on slate always seems like they are trying too hard, which is strange since the food is outstanding, and they don't need any fancy tricks. What was especially odd was having bread and butter pudding, with custard, served on a flat piece of slate - custard requires a bowl! Another minor flaw (and this is going to show me up as a real ale snob), was the fact that the second pint of bitter I had ordered came in some fancy larger glass, not a proper ale glass. A trivial point perhaps, but if you're going to set yourself up as a cut above by putting the food on pieces of slate, you need to attend to the minor details. Anyway, I digress. All in all this is an great hotel, in an excellent location, with excellent staff, but with a couple of minor flaws that make it a 4 star review, not 5.

The Golden Pheasant Hotel - Glorious view from room

I wonder which fancy company they are using to up their reviews for this dump. If I could give…read morethis property less than 1 star - I would. Honestly and accurately. The pub itself seems charming, but the rooms are shocking. Views of trash dumpsters and empty beer kegs, a carpet of cigarette butts outside the door, stained carpet and walls - including what looks like mold on the walls above the bathtub - the inn part of this place is a DIVE. Moldy, musty disgusting. "The best room they offer" according to the front desk person. I immediately turned down the room and asked for a refund - long story short, even with Expedia intervention, Golden Pheasant refused to refund, citing their "strict no-refund policy." It's strict alright.. one wonders how much of the income comes from duped travelers who have booked remotely and are now stuck after realizing the place is atrocious. Avoid at all costs.

How did the other reviewer gave it a 5 star I don't know, he must have stayed somewhere else altogether. Room: we where at the front, facing the high street. It may be a small town but that road is busy, all day long and at night with lorries and farm vehicles, linked to the A40 so everything is using the High Street as the main run. There's no sound proofing at all so you will hear everything, even with earplugs. Our bedding had a mysterious splattering of green dots, which on seeing the cleaner the next morning turned out to be toilet cleaner. Also a blood stain on the bed cover, and we had to ask for toilet paper as the cleaner isn't that observant. Dust! Everywhere, there wasn't anywhere where there wasn't a solid layer of dust, and the TV was filthy with marks from previous visitors. Bathroom had black mould around the shower and on the tiles, and the toilet could do with some attention from the cleaner. (buy and use toilet cleaner people) Food: Breakfast was very good, food wise, despite the one time when only half the breakfast items were out. We had to ask for butter, jams, toast (which should have came with the breakfast), and no coffee pot, coffee was delivered one cup at a time due to no hot water in the kitchen, stickiness on the tables which wasn't very nice to touch and was overdue for a proper clean and polish. We also had to endure an overly loud TV at one breakfast, and the other time we had the stench of disinfectant as the cleaner seemed to think breakfast time was a good time to go round with a mop & bucket, straight after she had done the toilets. Evening dinner was good, really, their chef knows his trade, and the place is better managed in the evenings. We would eat there again, just wouldn't look at the kitchen if the rest of the hotel is to go by. Staff: friendly, all of them. Some maybe not suited to hotel work, customer is NOT king here, but all was very pleasant to us. Overall: not a 3 star inn/hotel by any stretch, it's a 2 star and therefore if you looking for a 2 star place, this would be fine. The are much better places to stay and I wish I had done some research before booking this mistake.
