My wife and I got married here, and returned this past week for a nights stay, and a meal in the restaurant.
It is a genuinely beautiful place, in a spectacularly old building, with beautiful log fires to enjoy.
The room we had was great - the bridal sweet both times. Really large (two rooms), and an outstanding bathroom. The only slight flaw is the bed (four poster), which is both incredibly high, and incredibly small. I believe it's a queen sized bed, but as someone used to sleeping in a California King, it seemed claustrophobic, especially when the drop if you were to fall out of bed would be so far.
The restaurant was good, if slightly pretentious. Serving food on slate always seems like they are trying too hard, which is strange since the food is outstanding, and they don't need any fancy tricks. What was especially odd was having bread and butter pudding, with custard, served on a flat piece of slate - custard requires a bowl! Another minor flaw (and this is going to show me up as a real ale snob), was the fact that the second pint of bitter I had ordered came in some fancy larger glass, not a proper ale glass. A trivial point perhaps, but if you're going to set yourself up as a cut above by putting the food on pieces of slate, you need to attend to the minor details.
Anyway, I digress. All in all this is an great hotel, in an excellent location, with excellent staff, but with a couple of minor flaws that make it a 4 star review, not 5. read more
