In all the time that I have lived in and around Johnstown, I had never been able to make it here…read more On a recent trip back home I met my sister and her family for a dinner. I'm glad I finally did to check this place of my to try list. From the outside, it looks like a typical hole-in-the-wall bar in the Johnstown area. I had no idea where parking was because every time I drove past here I would be doing it at a pace I couldn't see. I was happy to see that there was ample parking behind the street facing building. Entry from the parking lot takes you up stairs or a zig-zagging ramp that looks fairly new. This area is also connected to an outdoor seating area, can't really call it a patio. Or, you can enter from outside and take the stairs up into dining room. This is a seat yourself establishment. Once you are seated, you are greeted and given menus. What an extensive menu it is. The amount of items on the menu, if you haven't been here before, can be daunting. It took me a few minutes to just give it a once over. When the server came back around to take our drink order she asked if we needed a few more minutes, yes, we did. When she returned I was ready to go. I ordered the Pickle Chips as my appetizer and the Howler as my main. The Pickle Chips were served with a side of ranch for dipping and they were amazing. Perfectly coated, not too much and not too little. Dipping in the ranch cooled them down just enough to be enjoyable. Now, the Howler, is kind of an experience. The Howler is one of their signature burgers. Half-pound patty cooked to your liking. The set toppings on this burger is bacon, choice of cheese (American Cheddar, Swiss, Provolone, or Pepper Jack), meat sauce, and a fried egg. You also can choose to add lettuce tomato onion and pickle. For mine, I went American for the cheese, lettuce, onion and pickle. There really wasn't any need for condiments as there was already so much on the burger to give it flavor. It almost comes off as either a breakfast burger or a chili cheese burger. Although I did as for medium, they overcooked it a bit. What was a nice addition here was the side. You can go with the traditional fries or go for one of many that don't seem to have an upcharge to it. Tater tots, slaw, applesauce, or nachos and one item for an upcharge, onion rings. I went with tater tots. Overall, this was an enjoyable meal. Our service was impeccable. Atmosphere was lively.

The staff was super nice and the owner came out to ask if it was good and shook my hand, thanking me for coming in. This is one of the cleanest dive bars I've been in and I highly recommend giving them a try. No derelicts were at the bar, there was even a family having lunch there with a young boy. Maybe the crowd changes as the night wears on, but in the middle of the day it was really a pleasant experience.

The tacos were all excellent that I was able to try, and while the $5.00 portion of chips and guacamole was outstanding, the guac had started to oxidize a pretty decent amount. The rest of my family all enjoyed their meals, but there was a slight hiccup with my son's meal coming out well after ours (as opposed to first, as you'd expect with a toddler). But overall, can't complain much at all, and it is definitely a spot I'd visit again, especially to try some of their beer!

Jim & Jimmies is kind of a hidden gem, maybe even a needle in a haystack type of place to find. To…read morenote, this place can be referred to as a biker bar if you did not know better. That can be attributed to when Thunder in the Valley is going on. If you were to speed by it on any given day, you wouldn't think twice about stopping here. It looks like a roadside bar that has been there for years. When you do happen to come by in the warmer months it is kind of like the perfect setting to go about a meal. Their dining area opens up to allow air to move freely within and there is table seating outside as well. The space is well used and has a wide variety of things to keep your attention while waiting for you food to be served. I showed up here with my sisters and nephew for a meal one day. We walk in and were able to seat ourselves wherever we liked. Once seated we were given menus and placed our drink orders. I did a through look through of the menu since I had never been here before before making a decision. A lot caught my eye, so that may be a factor for a revisit down the road. Ultimately I went with the Fried Bologna Pittsburgh Style. I had also ordered a side of fries, as an appetizer I went with Onion Rings. Once our order was placed our food kind of trickled out. What you need to realize is that the kitchen area is more in the bar portion of this place than the dining portion of this place. So food is prepared over there and then needs to make a trip to the dining area. This was by far the most frustrating aspect of our dining experience. None of our food came out in an appropriate time frame. One appetizer would show up and we would wait. By the time all the appetizers showed up our entrees were in front of us. Along with my onion rings I got to sample the Zucchini Fries and Breaded Cauliflower Bites. I'm not a huge zucchini fan, but I could get behind these. There were cut just like regular fries, battered and served piping hot. The cauliflower was pretty amazing as well. Dip those bad boys into ranch dressing and it's on. My onion rings came out and looked like picture perfect representation of what onions rings should look like. Not sure what type of batter they used, but it was light and crunchy. Onto the bad boy of the night. Fried Bologna Pittsburgh Style. As you can see from the picture it was pretty impressive. This things is not your sliced bologna that they fry up. Instead it is a thick piece cut from the bologna log, halved and then fried up. Some cheese is then stacked on top of that and a nice portion of Cole slaw. That Cole slaw had a tang to it. On the other portion of the bun you had some barbecue sauce. I was a bit hesitant with this. I did not thing that the Cole slaw and barbecue sauce would mesh well and throw me for a loop. However, when those two married it was a wild combination that kept me going with this sandwich. Add to that a nice portion of fresh cut fries and the sandwich is complete. It is not as big as a sandwich you would get in Pittsburgh, but it definitely hit all the Pittsburgh notes. Back to the service. Our server was amazing. It was a bit hectic in here but she kept going. She was patient with us, which we appreciated especially since my nephew was with us. However, some things were missed. I never received my side order of fries, dipping sauces were missing, and drinks were forgotten. A little brush up on those and this will make for a perfect experience.

I will add, while the bathroom decor is really nice, the sink might be difficult for people with arthritis in the wrists or are wheelchair bound.
