I have visited this establishment several times. The building seems to be fairly clean, the food is generally good and generous while the service is average. We stopped in on a Saturday one hour before closing - plenty of time for a meal. We ordered fairly quickly and the food was brought out in a fair time. The pancakes I had were nothing to write home about. The biscuits and gravy meal was good. The ham and cheese scrambler was dry and needed more cheese. They were missing ingredients for the house omelette so we switched our order to a ham and cheese omelette that was lacking. The most egregious part of our dining experience was the employee mopping the floors right next to our table. The smell of bleach didn't help the enjoyment of our meal. We got the impression that they just wanted to get done. This once really nice breakfast spot now sports dirty, torn booths. Very unfortunate. read more

What are the qualities of a superior breakfast restaurant? A delicious cup of coffee, quality ingredients, attentive staff, and an organized and clean environment. Stacks Pancake House earns a short stack in all of the above. The coffee is mediocre at best. The culinary offerings are average and straightforward. The environment seems dated and worn. Expect a bottleneck upon arrival and exiting. Not a well-thought-out flow plan. The waitress, although busy, was the most impressive element of our dining experience. She was attentive, kind, and accommodating. Stacks Pancake House is not a restaurant without merit. All areas can easily be improved, so we will likely give the business another visit. It's understandable that the wait time was a bit. Which my party and I were more than willing to wait. Mind you this was my very first time eating there and overall,eating out in 20 yrs. The server that we first came into contact with, just told us to "sit down". The main waitress was cold,gave little to no interest in working,let alone attending to us. We asked for drinks,pancakes and creamer,never received it. While eating there was hair in my food. I brought it to the server. She took my plate and did nothing about it. Wouldve been better if she said something along the lines of "im sorry bout that,let me see what i can do about it!"but she didnt,she then brought us our check immediately! We asked for to-go boxes and whe looked extremely bothered. Finding the hair in my steak made me feel like I was going to throw up. I left feeling hungry,tired,nauseous and frustrated! Ambiance nice, restaurant clean, staff are friendly and welcoming. Syrup that came with pancakes was warm. Chorizo skillet was delicious. Eggs cooked exactly to order. With all of this, do you wonder why I only give this place 3 stars? If you don't drink coffee, then they get 5 stars. But I drink coffee, and it's my favorite part of breakfast. Last time we tried to go here they were closed due to staffing issues. I get that. No hard feelings. But today we stood inside the doorway for at least ten minutes and during that time not one employee looked at us, nodded to us or spoke to us. Common courtesy goes a long way. Elkhart doesn't have many breakfast places, and most are pretty much the same story, different name. Stacks is like that, it definitely isn't bad, but it isn't anything noteworthy or special. The food is fine, service fairly quick but nothing has much flavor and the most exciting dish is just a burrito made with chorizo and fajita veggies. I got a classic breakfast plate. My eggs were cooked perfectly and the bacon was tasty, however the potatoes honestly sucked. No flavor, just soggy unseasoned hashbrowns. They are labeled "home fries" but are actually shredded hash brownstone. Still, this place isn't bad, just don't expect much in terms of seasoning. Even with short staff everyone here was friendly and patient. It's great to see customer service still being taken seriously and given seemingly without effort. It shows just how much these employees care about their job and customers. The portions are huge, and while the food isn't gourmet, it's hearty and tastes good. Best of all the prices are affordable. My family and I usually come here Sunday mornings for breakfast. A lot of people think Grandmas is the place for breakfast in Elkhart... I would disagree. Here the prices are better, the food is better, and the best thing is that we don't get the rude and angry owner at grandmas. Th main gimmick at that other place is each egg is two. So you get way too much food. The staff at stacks is always friendly and the food is awesome. I usually get the biscuits and gravy Omelette and my wife gets he peanut butter lovers French toast. It looks like one of a hundred other breakfast/pancake house dumps that you see all over the country. However, when I came for lunch I had quite the pleasant experience. Granted, the decor is nothing to write home about (typical breakfast diner), but my food was quite good. Any of the sandwiches can be made into a wrap or panini and I chose the latter. My steak and blue cheese panini had nice grill marks on each side and the steak was juicy and tender. Don't turn your nose up on this place when you drive by. read more

If you are a special snowflake that expects every restaurant to be a "unique dining experience" then you're going to have a bad time. But if you want a filling meal at a reasonable price then this is a place to consider. My husband and I are fairly new to this area and we came here because a friend recommended it for a good breakfast place. On a Friday morning around 10am the place was not packed, but several tables and booths were occupied. We were greeted and seated fairly quickly and our drink orders taken immediately. The table could've used another swipe with a rag (there were some crumbs from the previous occupant) but other than that things were clean enough. I ordered the "traditional breakfast" (eggs/toast/bacon/American fries) and my husband ordered the angry burrito. Everything we got was to our liking. Eggs were done as requested (over medium), bacon was crisp, fries did need some salt but had the right crispy/soft ratio going. My husband's burrito was friggin HUGE and completely solid. Not just a bunch of tortilla like ya get at cheap fast food places. Some of the other reviews said that service was bad. Ours was decent. I'm not a big fan of chatty waitresses or being hovered over while eating. Our waitress was pleasant, brought everything out quickly, checked on us once mid-meal, and brought the bill at an appropriate time. I think that's good service, but maybe some people need more assistance....who knows. So if you want a normal Midwest breakfast menu in a nice-enough place with good-sized portions and affordable prices then I would consider this place.
