At first glance (and visit) I thought to myself..."how could anyone hate on this place!?" It's so lovely and vibrant and buzzing and cool. Approved by the Hipster Association Berlin. HAB! And it is. A bit too cool for school. As it were. Sometimes the staff is super nice and friendly and other times you'll feel like you've interrupted an episode of The Real World Berlin. Sometimes snobby, sometimes fantastic. The upside? Plenty of tables, outlets, work space, energy, creativity, networking opps, clean bathrooms, decent light food options, fresh juices, etc. The downside? The 'tude. It is out in full effect. We came here just to have dessert and hang out. I liked the vibe of the place but mostly I like the fact that lots of cafés in Berlin serve alcoholic beverages and are therefore more like bars at night. And so unlike NY, you can actually go to places like these after dark, have a glass of wine, and quietly read a book. I didn't get to check out the food selection too much but I did have a slice of chocolate cake that had dark cherries and hot pepper and the combination was awesome! Loved this place! Good Riesling and they had vegan sandwiches. First time I visited this place and the people working there were really nice. We felt very welcome. Yeah, St. Oberholz, you're alright. But you are definitely not as awesome as you THINK you are. First of all, your customer service is wayyyy snottier than anything I've experienced here in Berlin. I know there can be some usage-discrepancies when it comes to foreign languages, but you don't have to stare me down like I'm a total freaking moron for trying to use my (fairly good) German. And then you snap at the next member of our party, for pointing to a type of foccacia in YOUR deli that YOU can't seem to identify? Schade. Also, for a self-service place, it's usually helpful when busy to form a line. But there is no clear place to do so inside St. Oberholz...you either sort of approach the counter from whatever side seems to open...and hope the people working there serve you next. When drinks and eats are ready, the serving process is just as chaotic as the ordering. So how is it that you, St. Oberholz, are in any way redeeming? Wellllll...that crazy foccacia I had (which I also apparently can't pronounce) was DELISH. I mean, meaty, cheesy, with the right amount of tomato and greens thrown in, and the bread had the perfect crunch. I recall actually wanting to devour two of these sandwiches, but didn't have the guts to order another one. Can't go outin' myself ALL over town as a total fatty, 24/7. Will I be back? Hmm. Despite the fact I was ready to eat said sandwich x 2, I really want nothing to do with the staff behind the counter. Admittedly, I might dream about that frickin' foccacia. Great cafe for homework - the upstairs is perfect! Come early though if you want a table otherwise it gets packed. Downstairs isn't bad but it's louder and with the two doors, it gets a bit drafty. The teas here are really good but a bit pricey (€2.90) for small cup. Croissants are delicious and all their little salads and juices look good, too. English speaking staff which is nice if its early and my German speaking self doesn't want to come out yet. Will have to come get a drink sometime here! read more

St. Oberholz is a mainstay among friends and lots of Berliners who appreciate the space, free wife (should I leave that type-o? Free wives at St. O!) hehe. Free wifi is indeed handy, and they even take care to make sure there's space and seats kept for those not pushing pixels around. The food is consistently yum: salads are fresh and crunchy with scrumptious dressing, the soups are seasonal, and there's a decadent variety of cakes - just try and tear your eyes away from that cake display...(OK my favourite is the chocolate New York cheesecake!). A great place to meet for an appointment or cosy chat, and people watching on the busy Tor Str. (seats outside for the summer months too.) The secret ingredient of this corner plot is obvious - Wireless Internet, a great place to be seen and 'keep me up' caffeine. This is no new concept in Berlin but somehow this one has become the preferred hotspot for the virtual junkie, the tech C.E.O and the skinny jeaned crowd. But don't worry, pixel lovers aren't the only ones welcome here. Other things make St. Oberholz a great place to visit. For example, lots of interesting, creative and international people frequent the cafe, located in trendmeister Rosenthaler Platz. So it wouldn't be out of the ordinary if the rake-thin guy next to you is the creative one behind a platinum selling electro band, and if you look closer the gonzo guy buying a fresh-made peppermint tea could be the author of a popular controversial coming-of-age novel. St. Oberholz is the café and workspace for entrepreneurs who have startups so cool that you will probably never undertand their business model, or what the startup even does (Nor will the market, the consumers or the investors, so new businesses are started all the time). It's busy, but a great place to network and meet people. If you like to work in busy surroundings, this is your spot. The prices are high compared to the quality, but the staff is super friendly and fun, even when it's busy as hell. read more

the day shift at cafe bar were really shitty people, which is a shame because the venue itself is awesome. anyway, i walked over here instead and i got a totally different vibe. the folks behind the counter were really helpful and attentive. and once you've been helped, they'll go back to dancing and singing to whatever is playing on the stereo. optimism is infectious. their lemon bars here are very interesting, it was like a cake brownie thing. i'm still not sure how i feel about it but flavor wise, it was wonderful. then again, the extra flour did cut down the characteristic tartness of a lemon bar. i'm confused. but i still like it. the people that chill here are really really cool and interesting too. networking is really easy here for techie folks like me, so get your bcs ready! read more

Sankt Oberholz is a hidden gem, and I don't mean by it's location. I mean that for some people, it's an instant click but for others - it takes some time to warm up to it. In my case, it took me a bit of time. Oberholz is somewhere everyone can go. I've sat at a table with a mostly homeless person and i've sat at a table with some American wannabe snobs who only visited to use the wifi to plan world trips (I'm American, I'm allowed to make this judgement) Here's what I love: There are a couple of places, like under the stairs or against the menu wall where you can sit and always have a charger, a great view and comfortable service. It's possible to get vegetable juices, fancy soups, hearty salads (with fresh basil and marinated mozzarella balls) and coffee until very late in the evening, the staff is always overly friendly even among grumpy customer, One time I was cleaning out my wallet and I had all of the receipts on my lap and the nice woman came and took them from me to throw them away because she could see they were piling up. Wifi is free, fast and reliable. It's not so WARM inside that you can't breathe but it's also not so COLD that you have to wear your jacket. read more

However, expect terrible coffee and unpleasant service. It's always something of a mystery to me why a cafe that has gone to all effort of renting a building, putting in chairs and hiring staff, can't follow that up with some decent coffee. Oh well. Like some other comments on here, I also think that they serve you without too many smiles... but so what?!, they are cool Berlin hipsters. You want barista attitude, just go to Vancouver or Williamsburg for the real too-cool-for-barista-school. They are decent enough to accept speaking in English to me here, and I like that! Coffee is good and the music makes my foot tap enough that I will be parked here, working on the good WiFi while staying in Berlin. I was a regular here during my time as a student. It was one of my favorite cafes to "get work done" (which was probably about half the time just me messing around on my laptop...anyway, I digress). The cafe has a very international/hipster vibe going on. You will guaranteed see a lot of people sitting alone and hanging out with their Apple products. If you're looking for a place to be alone with other people, this place is it. It wouldn't be my first choice as a venue to meet up with a friend as there are more friendly and less technology-filled places to go to. It is quite expensive, but I guess I use the "free" wifi to justify the prices to myself. At least they have a bar so if your work gets annoying, you can just get a cocktail =D. The espresso drinks are decent, as is the food. My best tip would be to come here during the summer. It is absolutely delightful to be at St Oberholz when it's warm out, the sun is shining, and they have the big glass windows open. read more

This last winter I visited Sankt Oberholz at least a couple times a week. It's a great place to grab a coffee with friends, work on your laptop, or people watch. Unlike the previous posts I've never had an issue with the servers... a few were quirky but everyone was super nice. Overall the drinks are good, the food ranges from good to mediocre, and seating can be hard to find at times, but the real draw is the atmosphere and the vibe it gives off. For me, it felt a lot like a larger German version of Coupa Cafe in Silicon Valley. read more

I've already been here twice: the first time, it was packed with people, providing the perfect busy work atmosphere. The second time was a Sunday evening, so the place was almost empty. Three things I love: WIFI, OUTLETS, and LONG OPENING HOURS. It's a really, really great place for studying, especially if you like working in busy areas. I liked feeling like I fit in with my laptop. BUT, if you're looking for a place to have a cozy chat with a friend, I'd probably recommend someplace else. Good for a study group, but it could be hard to find space, depending on when you go. Food and drinks were pretty standard fare, not cheap but not too expensive. (Quark for approx 3,50, glass of white wine for 2,40 euros.) The service wasn't memorable or particularly friendly, but it wasn't all that important to me. I was there for the work space, not for the service. Also, I haven't tried it yet, but it seems that you can print there?? (I'll update once I try it out.) read more

Internet is much more reliable than elsewhere in Berlin, unless you arrive during peak hours where it's slowed a bit. Bad hipster graphics, but gorgeous wooden floors. It's a toss up whether staff will be kind or dismissive and condescending. A former worker told me the staff are overworked and underpaid. Loud music in the evenings, maybe to deter internetting. Great place to work and meet up with friends. St. Oberholz is always buzzing and crowded with people armed with laptops.
