Frank and St. Louis Home Fires have been fantastic to us! We just moved to Ballwin and wanted to convert our wood-burning fireplace to gas. Great customer service, detailed information, and patience with all of our questions. After installation, we started having a couple issues with the fireplace shutting off automatically. It appears that there was a faulty piece (which rarely happens). Even though we had someone else install it, Frank continued reaching out and eventually replaced the whole burner until things were working perfectly. He didn't simply say, "Sorry, you bought this a few weeks ago, so there's nothing we can do" or "we didn't install it so it's on you guys." He kept following up to make sure that things were working well and that we were happy with the end product. We love our fireplace! It adds so much to our home. If you are really into BBQing and grilling stop by this place. They have all kinds of grill equipment, rubs, sauces, etc. (I make my own sauce and rubs so I don't buy them) But...the reason I go there (it's right across the street from my apt) is to get wood chips and chunks for smoking. You can get your traditional hickory, mesquite, oak and apple, but they also have pecan, cherry, peach, sassafrass, morning and other obscure woods. They also have a BBQ cook-off every year (I think in Oct.) Nice little place. read more

I went here with my wife to buy a smoker. The man behind the counter was more interested in shooting the breeze with a buddy customer who wasn't there to buy anything than even acknowledging us. I went in today as a first step into the world of meat smoking. I made the mistake, apparently, of telling the guy behind the counter two things ... (a) that I had become interested in smoking because my son is learning the art, and (b) that I - too - am a beginner. He asked - and I told him - that the smoker my son uses is a relatively inexpensive one and, after telling me what a piece of junk my son has, and then learning that I am not yet ready to drop $700 - $800 on an up-scale unit, he essentially told me to go to Home Depot or Lowe's and lost all interest in helping me learn what to look in an entry unit. Since I'm willing to bet that they make at least as much money with on-going sales of wood, charcoal, rubs, and other supplies as they do on initial sales, I would have thought that they would have wanted to cast themselves as helpful resources ... especially for beginners. Unfortunately, no way to give no stars, but after walking past a small group out front smoking or bbq'g, I went in and stood waiting for help to buy a Weber bbq I've been looking at online for some time....figured I'd keep the money local. There were folks in an adjacent room, apparently getting ready to talk to sometime from a radio station...they were all having a grand time, but I have a life to live, so I'll order online and have it delivered to my door. Terrible service . I went there looking for a grill replacement. The owner handed me his card and said to send pictures. I did with no answer for almost two weeks. I emailed again asking if he looked into it with I answer. Emailed again the next day and finally got an answer. It was " I have no options ". It took two weeks to send a four word reply. I was pleased with the service and buying experience I had at St. Louis Home Fires. While shopping for smokers, I looked online, at box stores, and at SLHF. The shopping process included talking to people, reading reviews online, and 3 or 4 trips to SLHF before finally making a decision. Each time, Frank was helpful and answered all of my questions. Yes, I spent more than I would have at a box store, but I feel like I got a vey high quality smoker that does a great job of holding a steady temperature. It's also nice to know the smoker is backed up by a local company should service ever be needed. When reading reviews, I got the impression that some of the cheaper smokers do not necessarily do a good job of holding a steady temperature, and it wasn't uncommon to read reviews of people that had to replace heater elements after less than one season's use with the less expensive smokers. read more
