I am going to tip toe around the service at this place and remember two key things: 1) I'm in Slurry as a result life takes a pace that requires you to sip long lattes (that aren't made with Bonsoy - because that was so last year), pontificate the world's problem over homemade ginger beers (which are bloody refreshing here) and then eventually get around to eating something that probably has truffle oil or something smashed involved 40 minutes later. 2) I'm in the Hills where your 'tude has to match your denim shirt, ironically oversized baseball cap and cinos. And then there was the food...eventually... I have to admit for $16.50 in Surry Hills I was surprised at the enormity that was my 3 pumpkin and sweet corn fritters with a poached egg and $2 worth of smashed avocado side (recommended by the only friendly waiter in the place). With a touch of mint and coriander in the fritters they were light, crisp and filling but not stodgy. The simple baby spinach salad and poached egg added plenty of character and different flavours to the meal but it wouldn't have been a 5 star meal unless I'd ordered the smashed avo on the side (be warned). It is incredibly busy and super trendy, so much so they can stick chucky like dolls on their walls as decoration and it be cool, but the food is worth its weight and wait. read more

Come for coffee and stay for lunch. Breakfast served all day! Hooray! Coffee with friends turned into lunch with friends. We enjoyed the variety of the menu and the freshness and tasty flavours of the food. The service was good and this place was busy the whole time we were there. Seating is available inside and outside. The highlight for us was definitely the meals. My friend was raving about her slow-cooked pork sandwich with coleslaw. My husband was really enjoying his omelette too. I had the salad special with a poached egg on top. Looking forward to another meal at St Jude's soon. This place is just down the road so I obviously had to check it out. I've been here for coffee before ($3.50 now, not $3 like a previous review said) and it was pretty good, so I decided to come for the food. The staff is friendly and speedy...when you can manage to get their attention. Someone said get the pumpkin fritters...so I got the pumpkin fritters. My partner got the cous cous salad. My pumpkin fritters were pretty good, but there were some parts that were reaaallly salty. My partner's cous cous was so salty it was inedible so we sent it back. Chef must have accidentally spilled a bunch of salt when he was preparing our meal or something. Thankfully they took it back and got her another dish with no issue. Food was alright, salt withstanding and the coffee was good. Service is fine when they pay you attention. A-OK. read more

One of our favourite Brunch go to places. Pumpkin and sweet corn fritters, poached egg, rocket and spinach with dressing and hollandaise sauce, add a side of smashed avocado, and totally yummo. Coffees always hot , just as I ordered, partner always has a second one, I'm too full to fit anything else in. Staff always friendly and cheerful, so nice to see , and to be able to relax and enjoy a meal in a wonderful/colourful atmosphere that this place exudes. Would recommend highly. St. Jude is a very local place - and part of a new breed of cool Sydney cafes that deliver good coffee and healthy food - that's more than a panini. The space looks like it has been created from an old corner store/butcher - the kitchen looks very professional and efficient. The design of St Jude is fairly classic with some quirky retro objects on a shelf above the main room - there's footpath seating as well. As a franchise cafe owner in Perth, I like to explore independent cafes and see what they do well...or not so well. I only had coffee at St Jude's, which wasn't bad. The decor inside the cafe was bizarre with a religious theme (appropriate for the name I guess). The food did look delicious. What really attracted me to this cafe (and others like it) is the suburban feel...surrounded by homes, it seems the sort of place locals would meet and greet each other. So this little corner cafe in Redfern is awesome. Creepily decorated with old religious pictures and dolls, this place is surprisingly charming. I think the charm is found in the staff that work here. Attentive and extremely friendly, they will make you feel right at home. The coffee here is good, not great, but really good. Ordered a few cups, so I think the proof is in the empty cups of coffee. But the real reason you come here is not the coffee but the food. The food here is really good. I have only come here for breakfast, so I can only comment on that. But the breakfast is really good. I love the Bennie here. Also, I know that it is random but the muffins here are great! Fresh and baked on the spot, they are always great. One of the best thing about the cafe is the outside seating, but they are hard to come by, as this is where most people go. Sitting inside is good, but not as good as sitting outside in the sun. So if you are looking for a cool little place to have a good breakfast then look no further. read more

I wanted to like St Jude. I really did. It's one of my locals and I was so excited when they opened, but...alas...I was whelmed. Not overwhelmed. Not underwhelmed. Just...whelmed. I went on a weekday morning and was lucky enough to snag the bench by the big open window, so I enjoyed my leisurely brunch with the sun on my back. They get a big tick for that. The interior is insanely cool and so perfect for the location on Bourke St. Not sure about the creepy doll on the shelf above the coffee station (I swear it was watching me) but big tick for decor. The service was slow. Not a tick. I ordered a fresh watermelon juice and it was bloody terrible. In fact, it was undrinkable. I had one sip and it was so awful that I pushed it aside and stuck to water. Not a tick. I ordered muesli with yogurt and poached peach. The honey and milk came on the side, and the serving was so huge I couldn't get through it all. It was pretty tasty, so tick for that (and half a tick from my companion who got to eat the rest of it). I don't drink coffee (sacrilege!) so I can't comment on the quality of the black crack, but my dining companion didn't complain, so tick there too. In terms of pricing, it sits at the higher end of the Surry Hills spectrum. Yes, breakfast everywhere in this area doesn't leave change from a 50 if there is two of you, but for a brand new cafe whose food and service is still wearing training wheels, I kind of resent getting no change from my 50. Honestly, I probably won't be back. We have enough options in Surry Hills that also have sunshine and do good muesli, that my needs can be met elsewhere. read more

I've been to St Jude several times and returned yesterday for breakfast - a fruit platter with yoghurt and sweetened quinoa. There wasn't as much quinoa as I'd hoped and the fruit selection was standard fruit-salad fare, but none the less it was a healthy and refreshing start to the day. My favourite on the eastern side of Surry Hills/Redfern. Always a delicious menu (love their baked eggs, and the pumpkin and corn fritters with a poached egg) and excellent coffee. Nestled amongst the classic federation terraces on Bourke st, I was excited to check this place out. The Fitout is fresh and contemporary whilst touching on the country theme. On this occasion I only ordered coffee, a latte and dbl riss. Sadly both were disappointing and not of the standard that such a venue and location deserved. This place hasn't been open that long but certainly nice to have something different to the usual Asian restaurants that seem to be turning Waterloo into a mini china town! The staff are friendly and quite relaxed considering how busy they are. The menu is uncomplicated and straight to the point with a great breakfast and light lunches on offer. Sharing a dessert isn't frowned upon either! The coffee is amazing thanks to the barista! Overall really nice atmosphere with a bohemian mix of people! Keep up the good work guys! read more

We are staying in a hotel in Market Street, Sydney and wanted to have a nice breakfast somewhere. We found this place online and it's delicious. I had poached eggs, mushrooms and avocado. My wife had the muesli with strawberries and fruit toast. They did half portions of scrambled eggs and toast with vegemite for my kids. They also serve breakfast all day. Really good place. I'm a bit surprised St. Jude's is only getting three stars. I reckon it's better than that... I had the burger, and it was a very well-constructed burger. I'm not normally a fan of beetroot in a burger - frankly I think it ruins a burger more than 9 times out of 10 - but someone has clearly given the flavour combinations in this burger quite a bit of thought. The beetroot was singing in harmony! Perhaps even more surprisingly, the bun was beautifully chosen too - the bready bit of a burger is often overlooked - and the overall effect was really good. Sweetness balancing sourness, great texture in the mouth, nice ingredients. I reckon I'll be back, and I don't even live that close! read more

The only thing more disgusting than this was the response of the chef, after returning the maggot filled sandwich to this poor excuse for a cafe, he meekly said "Ah sorry, want something else" read more

St Jude is a real 'go to' for us when hungover or just in need of a yummy, relaxing breakfast. The staff are always incredible, and I literally have not had a bad breakfast here. Always see a huge queue out the front each time I drive by. So decided to try them out for coffee. The first time I went, they only had a few customers, so weren't too busy. Yet I had to wait several minutes for the two staff (who clearly saw me waiting two steps in front of them) to finish talking to each other so I could place my order. Did not get an overly friendly or welcoming feel from the place. However, their coffee was fantastic. Kudos to the barista - he certainly knows his coffee! The second time I went was absolutely jam packed - big queue and lots of people milling around out front. I was able to order my coffee fairly quickly (and the staff were a lot friendlier this time - so maybe they were just having an off day the first time I went?). The wait for the coffee however was too extreme. Granted, I really do like their coffee. However, 20 minutes is too long for a takeaway coffee. I highly recommend the place for coffee (haven't tried their food). However, I'll likely only return if there is no queue. read more

Always good food particularly the omelettes that come up as breaky specials with ever changing combinations. Great coffee and a unique venue on the Surry hills border ....it's a bit out of the way but always popular with locals which is always the best recommendation you can get. The outside tables are perfect in winter to soak up the rays and enjoy the beauty of the tree lined street. read more
