Emeril Lagasse got his start here and hence was born the art of BAM!! I know this because St. John's has been one of my favorite places since I first ate then in 1978 when Emiril joined Miss Ines, or Vavo, there. Ines Albernaz owned her own restaurant on Swansea, MA where great Portuguese food was served every day and she brought that good cooking go this iconic restaurant where she cooked for decades and I was lucky enough to enjoy for a very long time. Despite her passing in 2013 the restaurant continues to serve the same good food that I've come to love over the years. The St John's Athletic Club has been for many years and is similar to several other athletic clubs around Fall River where the bar, and its members would gatherto watch soccer which was the centerpiece of these establishments. However over the years this place, while still having a bar, has evolved into a full service restaurant for family dining. My last visit was for my favorite Portuguese Steak, it is a Delmonico steak seared and cooked in a spiced sauce with garlic and peppers. It's served with fried eggs, crazy good fries and rice with the peppers and garlic in top and some Portuguese bread, it's awesome! My next favorite is the shrimp Mozambique, I cook that myself but it is so unique and delicious that it's always a real treat. Other great dishes to try are Pork and little necks, Fish & chips (they serve flounder, not cod, love it), chourcio sandwiches and the daily specials like clam boils or octopus are great too! The place is comfortable with some very nice people with good service any time. I had shrimp it was excellent I definitely will go back. Service was very good and friendly.

The food at the restaurant is 10/10. It was so good! reasonable prices! however, the bar manager Tracy is VERY rude, she told the bartender working not to serve me when i had NO alcohol beverages and she has kicked me and my fiancé out of the bar for no reason. we didn't have a conversation with any of the staff at this time. I had ordered a blue long island while eating my food at the restaurant and the bartender gave me JUST alcohol. no mixer, no sprite, not even grenadine. I had sent it back and Tracy had given an attitude about it. The bartender working was named Kim. Bartenders need better training when making mixed drinks. read more

Sunday Afternoon, I'd say about 1/2 the tables were occupied, sit were you want. Our waitress was a very pleasant young woman, she could not have been nicer, answered all of our questions. Overall service was excellent in all respects. Food was hot and served fast. Everything was tasty with generous portions. I would have given 5 stars but my "steak" was not quite as expected. It was a very thin piece of beef, cooked well done, I had ordered "medium". It would be hard for the steak to be anything but well done given how thin it was. The original St. John's club restaurant was awesome. but since the restaurant on Rodman st in Fall River is closed and has moved to the Twins restaurant on Miller st. in Fall River the food is not the same. My last purchase was fish and chips, and a chourico sandwich with the fries on the side. Everything was made to order. But the service was terrible at the door. I stood and waited 12min before someone talked to me. Another time picking up take out, it was worse. I couldn't figure out where the take out line was, and once a staff member did Talk to me she was not nice. Now the food. Ugh. The worst part. the fish and chips were a disaster. The fish had a slight fishy taste and it was extremely salty. Not even close to the old place. I had to toss the meal. The chourico was weak attempt at a typical sandwich found in one our many other fine Portuguese restaurants in Fall River. The sandwich (large) looked anemic, skinny and lacking flavor. the saddest part is I'll never go back, but this was the place to at one time. My 40plus years of eating in this city it was the worst chourico and chips I've ever had. FYI. I've never written bad review in my life. read more

First time here , were we were going the restaurant was closed so locals at the bar suggested St John's. Turned out to be a great suggestion all food was good. Pork and little necks, little necks in broth with garlic delicious. Chorizo and French fries, fish and chips. Big portions well worth the money. Definitely worth checking out !!!!! read more

I haven't been here in many years and remember some great seafood dinners. Finally went back tonight with a group of friends hoping for a repeat of great dining. Started with fried calamari. Very overcooked and a smaller portion than expected. Some friends had the steaks. They were cooked properly, but lacked flavor. I had the seafood dinner. The fish was overcooked and VERY salty. One piece was almost ineatable. For $18, not much "value" items as in the past. So disappointed. Sorry I talked the place up to my friends. I will not be returning. read more

Let me say the food is not too bad, but not my favorite. For me personally I would give at least a 3.5 , but thought they deserved more than a 3. Likes and dislikes Likes: affordable prices, especially for Portuguese food! The steak is huge and juicy! Fries are crispy and delicious. The waitresses and women who have opened and maintained this place are so nice. Dislikes: The food selection could be a little bit better, come on a Portuguese restaurant they doesn't have a lot of Portuguese soups?? My mom's fish was absolutely disgusting. She was sick to her stomach from the powdery nasty stuff they call "breading". The fish was also bland. Besides all of this me and my dad come back each time because they can make a nice steak and shrimp Mozambique. The place is clean but the furnishings could be improved. I ate at St. John last night after not going to this restaurant in about 1 year due to serving bread that some one buttered for me. Thank you for the help! Service was less then poor. Once the meal came they never even made eye contact. My husband ordered fish and accompanied by a long black hair! So yummy.... I ordered shrimp with no taste I ate it with a push. I will go here time and time again when I want some good Portuguese food. The plate size is big but it will not put even a dent in your wallet. With a glass of wine and nice entree you'll be full and satisfied. Love the Portuguese steak plate! read more

Very unhappy with this place. On my friends 21st birthday he didn't get out of work till 7 so at 5:30 everyone else whos waiting for him to get out decided we want food. His mom had been here before said there food was good so by 5:45 we ordered our food they said it would be ready in an hour. So in 45 mins we leave the house and head to go get the food. We go in and wait for another hour and then finally ask and they said they forgot about our meals. If I was the one making a decision know would have either left or gotten it for free. I won't be going back. It appears they replaced the entire wait staff. I thought they were bad then, they are worst now. My order did not come out as ordered. Once the plate was on my table I never received attention again. I waited 20 minutes with my plate, ready to go with my arms crossed, and got tired of waiting for my bill.
