I've visited this restaurant twice before and never had this type of experience, but today was extremely disappointing. When I walked in, I stood in the waiting area for about 10 minutes waiting to be seated. The restaurant was not busy, and there were two servers sitting at the bar chatting with the bartender who clearly saw me but did not acknowledge or greet me. A simple "Hi, we'll be right with you" would have gone a long way. Eventually, the bartender (a tall young man) approached me without greeting me and started walking upstairs. He then turned around and said, "I forgot a menu," as if it was an afterthought. When we got upstairs, he placed (more like tossed) the menu on a table that still had a dirty cup on it that looked like someone had just been drinking from it. Instead of addressing that, he immediately walked over to another table to check on two guests who were already dining. After finishing with them, he walked right past me without asking if I'd like to start with a drink or acknowledging that I was even seated. There was absolutely no hospitality it felt more like hostility and indifference. The ambiance is aesthetically pleasing, but unfortunately that's where the positives end. The food is mediocre at best and definitely not worth overlooking such poor service. Customer service makes or breaks a dining experience, and today it completely broke it for me. I'm so so sad that a place that was a one time favorite served me one of the worst meals I've had. We went on. Wednesday night and they were definitely short on help. I told the host to not worry about it and we would wait, these things happen. We were seated upstairs and not waited on for about 10-15 minutes. The staff was maxed out and apparently the kitchen had issues. Not the staffs fault at all. I ordered my favorite dish, which is a Panko Parmesan Cod with mashed potatoes and vegetable. I've had this dish many times here, but this was by far the worst. The piece of fish I had was very thin, and although it was Panko Parmesan, it smelled like fish and tasted like it was bad. I took a couple bites and did not finish it. The side salad I ordered also tasted like fish. I still can't figure out if it was a salad dressing or the lettuce itself that was contaminated. I will say that the mashed potatoes and the cocktails were delicious. The waitress did her best to take care of us and did a very good job considering she was slammed. The Tipsy Toboggan isn't really a pizza place. It's a gastropub that happens to serve pizza. That distinction matters. The 10-inch pies landed somewhere between Greek-style and bar pie, though the execution didn't commit to either tradition. Toppings ran all the way to the edge. The crust was thicker than a classic bar pie cracker. Not bad ideas, just half-formed. The real problem was consistency. There wasn't any. Within a single pie, you'd get one slice with a perfectly golden undercarriage and another that was clearly underdone. The cheese distribution varied. The sauce appeared and disappeared almost at random. When you got a bit more of it, the flavor improved. Between the two pizzas we ordered, one wasn't better than the other. Just differently inconsistent. The plain cheese outperformed the pepperoni. The pepperoni itself wasn't memorable, but the cheese had moments where things came together. Usually in the thicker, better-cooked sections where the sauce happened to congregate. The vibes are awesome. They've decked it out in full holiday regalia. Paper snowflakes, rustic log railings, antler chandeliers dripping with ornaments, Moravian stars, that blue underglow lighting that photographs well. Mounted deer heads. A bear. It looks like a ski lodge designed by someone who commits to the bit, and I mean that as a compliment. The staff seemed nice when they materialized. The problem was the materializing. They need more bodies on the floor. When someone came by, they were friendly. The gaps between visits were long enough that you noticed. The Tipsy Toboggan does a lot of things. A creative gastropub menu, cocktails, live music, themed events, decorations that deserve their own review. Pizza isn't its calling card. Come for the vibes. Order the steak tips or the prime rib. We went to the Tipsy Toboggan last night and we absolutely loved it! The outside lights were so pretty, especially on a chilly night, and inside was cozy, warm, and there was a fire burning in the oversized fireplace. The bar is large and there is seating both upstairs and down. We were seated upstairs and it was very nicely decorated with throw pillows for our backs, beautiful star shaped lights, and also Halloween decor. The builkding reminds me of a lodge, with honey colored wood and a high ceiling. Jamie was our server and she was friendly, attentive, and she answered all of our questions. For our drink, we ordered the Temptation Bowl for Two, and we chose the cider sangria. The drink arrived in a large bowl, with a shot of 150 that was on fire. So cool! The sangria was delicious - This was a seasonal cider, but the temptation sangria is always on the menu. We ordered two pizzas - one with cheese and one with chourico. Both were really good with a thin crust and cheese all the way to the edge. The other items on the menu look amazing, so we will be going back to try them. Also, there are nightly specials such as prime rib night, shrimp night, and they care currently offering a Thanksgiving Dinner special on Monday nights. Lastly, I wanted to compliment The Tipsy Toboggan on their Veterans Day special. Last night was Veterans Day and they were giving all veterans a free meal. How awesome! Was in the area and stopped in for a quick lunch. The place is unique as it has a lodge vibe, with a touch of pub thrown in. The waitresses are attentive and efficient. Both food and drinks came pretty quickly. I had the chicken and shrimp Mozambique. The sauce was good. The fries tasted like they were previously frozen, the shrimp and chicken were bland of themselves and really needed the sauce to provide flavor. The rice was a smaller grain rice that didn't help round out the dish. A little more seasoning on the proteins and a jasmine type of rice would have made the dish better. They had live music and we were able to be seated right away (Sunday in March at 4:30). Our server was friendly, and took my husband's gluten allergy seriously, making a point to write it down. The menu was clear what options could be made gluten free. He got a cocktail and I got a Super Bock on draft. We were both pleased with our drinks. For entrees, I got the chicken Mozambique pizza. It was tasty, didn't quite hit my craving for chicken Mozambique, but it was a good option! My husband got the pot rot risotto and was super pleased with how tasty it was. We will be back soon. Stopped in for dinner while in the area tonight. We were greeted quickly and sat where we requested. The server Connor was at our table almost instantly. We ordered a spicy margarita, and a mojito. The drinks were just ok, not bad bit just ok. We ordered the Pot Roast poutine for an appetizer. I ordered a bread bowl of chowder and my wife ordered the parmesan cod. The poutine was disappointing. I ordered the seafood linguine special which was described as having lobster, scallops and shrimp in a vodka sauce. The shrimp and scallops were present with three of each but when it came to the lobster the meat was so obscure I couldn't find the tiny ground up pieces with a microscope. We've visited several times with friends and family and have always enjoyed it, so tonight was a surprise. Arrived at 5:30 on a Friday with my wife and 10-month-old daughter. The outdoor patio was completely empty. The downstairs dining room had little to no activity, I don't recall seeing anyone seated. Upstairs was quiet enough that there was minimal noise coming down. The host greeted us, asked our preference, and was grabbing menus when another staff member stepped in and asked if we had a reservation. When I said no, she told us the next available table was 8:30. No glance at the floor plan. No waitlist offer. No "let me see what I can do." Just the bar, if you can find a seat there, while I'm standing there holding an infant. I've spent 20+ years in hospitality, the majority of my career in restaurant management. One of the most important lessons I carried through all of it is this: when someone walks through your door, you acknowledge that they could've gone anywhere tonight and they chose your place. Especially in today's economy, where people are deliberate about where they spend their money, that matters. It should be felt from the moment they walk in. Tonight it wasn't even close. A two-top with a baby on a Friday at 5:30 is a gift. Sub-90-minute turn, easy cover, out before your dinner rush peaks. Any host worth their weight knows you work to find a way, or at minimum you look, you offer the waitlist, and you treat guests like you want them to come back. None of that happened. She didn't look at the floor. She didn't offer options. She gave us the bar suggestion and moved on. Checked the website from the parking lot. Reservations available at 6:45 and beyond throughout the night. We could've booked on the spot and been seated within the hour. Tonight we chose Tipsy Toboggan. What a beautiful building. The decorations were still up from Christmas and we're very nice. There are igloos outside if you wanted to sit in one of those , I'm sure reservations are required for that. We started off with drinks, my wife had the white sangria, which was fine, but I wasn't crazy about my wine choice . We then had the calamari, which she loved, but I thought was just okay. We both had the Ferry Street Steak (their take on Portuguese Steak). She loved it, but the flavors just were not right for me and I didn't care for it. One thing that we could agree on was that their chocolate mousse was the best ever! So maybe my taste buds were off this night. After all, my wife has good taste, look who she married! All of the wait staff is attentive, friendly and will make suggestions when asked about the food items. The restaurant and very cozy outdoor dining space is always decorated and fun which enhances the experience. The Tipsy Toboggan is an awfully cute establishment. Decorated very cozy. Decorated appropriately for the current season. Think snowflakes and lights. They have updated their outdoor patio area to be a small winter wonderland for the igloos. If it wasn't raining it would have been nice to sit by their outdoor fireplace. Nice staff. Good menu (think some seafood the rest American fare.) Prices are a little high but we were here for the igloo experience! We started off with their well known buffalo dip. It arrived in a bread bowl. Let me tell you, the bread was the win! I enjoyed the pieces of bread smothered in the dip (then the bread was super soft.) My husband did have a difficult time ordering a beer. They are serving Canned Heat (a brewery literally across the street) but were out of 2/6 beers. Limited options here, would like to see them add some more if theya re going to run low... I had a specialty drink for the day strawberry lemonade. It was a rough mix where nothing was strong enough to dominate the drink in flavor and it just wasn't cold. I had the pot roast risotto. The risotto was Delicious! I visited this place in May and I've been thinking about the pizza I ate ever since. I'd honestly make the drive from the north shore to Fall River just to eat it. As Dave Portnoy knows, that's how you know a pizza deserves a high score. The patio was adorable with twinkle lights and couches. We brought our dog and everyone was so sweet to him. Months later my sister was wedding dress shopping up the street and I suggested she and my mom come here. They too couldn't stop raving about this place and kept saying they'd make the drive to return. My mom has celiac and was incredibly pleased with the gluten free options. This place is a gem.
